FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Cape May Jazz Festival presents "A Dizzy Gillespie Celebration" November 8-10, 2002 presented by Fleet

Swing and be-bop on down to Cape May, NJ for the 18"* weekend of jazz produced by the Cape May Jazz Festival, beginning on Friday, November 8 through Sunday, November 10, 2002. The November festival will honor the music of Dizzy Gillespie, who is known for stimulating the evolution of jazz from swing to be-bop in the 1940's, to the big band style in the 1950's and beyond. Gillespie was one of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time, second only to Louis Armstrong. He dazzled the world with his talent for pioneering be-bop and Latin Jazz. With his puffed-out cheeks, bent trumpet and quick wit, he also was a great showman.

Many musicians will be performing throughout the festival to honor Dizzy Gillespie. Gillespie's musicians, including his dear friend , will be present at a panel discussion titled "Dizzy Gillespie: The Man and His Music", on Saturday November 9 from 11am-12 noon at Convention Hall. Other panelists include , Phil Woods, Paquito D'Rivera, Benny Golson, Claudio Roditi, Junior Mance and Earl May.

Herbie Mann and Jasil Brazz featuring Bazilian musicians Edson "Cafe" DaSilva and Romero Lubannbo open the festival on Friday from 7:30-9:30pm at Convention Hall in Cape May. Mann is known as a seminal jazz flutist and pioneered the concept of "world music" by exploring the rhythms and harmonies of Africa, India, Cuba, Jamaica, the Middle East, Japan and Brazil. Mann and Gillespie have both integrated Brazilian music into jazz and vice versa.

Mann was named for 13 consecutive years as DOWNBEAT'S Number One Jazz Flutist.

At 8pm on Friday night the Don Cam Quintet will perform featuring Jeannie Brooks on vocals. They return by popular demand from last November's Festival. The Friday 9pm lineup

1 PO Box 2065, Cape May, NJ 08204 www.capemayjazz.org includes Sons Seals blues band plus, T.S. Monk featuring Winston Byrd, Arturo O'Farrill's Afro-Cuban Band, Jimmy Bruno Quintet, and Lenny Roberts Quintet with Freddie Hendrix. Saturday morning there will be a panel discussion "Dizzy Gillespie: The Man and His Music" in Convention Hall at 11am.

On Saturday afternoon from 1pm-4pm two jam sessions will be held at Carney's and a Blues Jam featuring Frank Bey at Cabanas. A CD signing party and wine tasting sponsored by Delicato Family Vineyards will be held at Savannah Key from 5pm-6pm.

On Saturday from 7:30pm and 9:30pm the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Star Band performs, featuring Slide Hampton, Paquito D'Rivera and Claudio Roditi. The band has received accolades from newspaper editors across the nation. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazzette said of the band "Performing the music of Dizzy Gillespie, the All-Star Band entranced the audience with songs that transcended boundaries of time and style." Grammy award-winning trombonist Slide Hampton played with Dizzy for many years, and he displays the same stage antics for which Gillespie is famous. Four-time Grammy winner Paquito D'Rivera is Cuban born, and performs in classical venues as well as jazz. He is an accomplished clarinetist and saxophone player, as well as composer and extraordinary performer. Brazilian-bom Roditi traveled with Dizzy Gillespie's United Nations Orchestra from 1989 to the mid 90s. He is known for integrating be-bop elements with Brazilian concepts, similar to Gillespie himself.

Continuing the tribute to Gillespie, Buster Williams' "Something More", featuring Kenny Barron, Benny Golson and Lenny White will also perform Saturday at 7:30pm and 9:30pm at the Star of the Sea Auditorium. Bassist and recording artist Buster Williams, from Camden, NJ, formed "Something More", which "evokes hard bop and cool jazz in vintage late- fifties to mid-sixties styles, from buoyant ballads to modal vamps to swerving uptempo tunes," according to Showcase. Kenny Barron has an unmatched ability to mesmerize audiences with his elegant playing, sensitive melodies and infectious rhythms and was named by the Los Angeles Times as " the most lyrical piano player of our time." Tenor saxophonist Benny Golson is an accomplished composer and music arranger, whose beginning in music began with Rhythm 'n' Blues groups. Drummer Lenny White doubles as music producer and composer, and the words innovation and excellence are synonymous with Lenny Whitel

A full compliment of concerts will be performed at various venues from 9pm-1am on Saturday including The Phil Woods Quintet at the Grand Hotel and jazz pianist Junior

2 PO Box 2065, Cape May, NJ 08204 www.capemayjazz.org Mance with Earl May and Don Glaser at Savannah Key. Woods' classic be-bop roots underlie much of his performances. His lineage is clearly rooted in Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie's mentor. "Dizzy," says Phil, "is pivotal to the whole core of my being." Junior Mance was inducted into the International Jazz Hall of Fame as a result of his outstanding career as a jazz pianist and teacher. He joined Dizzy Gillespie's band in 1958. Also on Saturday night, Bootsie Barnes Quintet with Bootsie on saxophone, featuring Duane Eubanks on trumpet and Denise King on vocals, returns by popular demand. Miss Justine's music has been described as "mellow, groovy, swinging and beautiful." Cool jazz artist Howard Isaacson and his band will be swinging in Congress Hall. Other Saturday late-night performers include William Cepeda Afro-Rican Jazz with Omar Kabir, and blues oriented Boccigalupe and the Badboys.

Sunday completes the weekend with two jam sessions from 1pm-4pm, held in Carney's Main Room and Carney's Other Room. A Jazz Brunch will be held on Sunday from 12 noon- 3pm at the Pelican Club, no ticket required.

Educational events supporting this season's festival from 10am to 1pm include: Guitar, horn and improvisation workshops plus the rhythm circle. Bring your instrument and join the funl
