SUCCESS IN THE CLASSROOM: Prior to Coach Lindsay Meggs arriving on campus, the grade point Husky No Hitters average of the baseball program rarely, if ever, reached 3.0 or higher. Meggs has turned around the culture in the Joe DeMers vs. UC Riverside (W, 8-0), classroom and the baseball team has a streak of reach 3.0 or higher in the classroom in 16 of the last 18 quarters. 2/24/18 (Perfect Game) In the fall of 2017, the team recorded a 3.25 GPA, the second-highest ever in the program's history. In the Winter Tim Lincecum (6 inn.) & Nick Hagadone (3), 2018 quarter, they combined for a 3.11 GPA. A total of 23 players had a GPA of 3.00 or higher, 10 made the Dean’s vs. Santa Clara (W, 9-0), 3/12/06 List (3.5 or better) and Adam Davenport posted a perfect 4.0 GPA. Bob Goucher (4 inn.) & Pete Tjaarda (1), vs. Seattle U, (W, 10-0), 4/3/85 THE BONDS THAT LAST: Juniors Willie MacIver (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) and Joe DeMers (Martinez, Rick Anderson (10 inn.) vs. Oregon St. Calif.) have been connected on the baseball field for well over a decade. The pair grew up in the East Bay of California (T, 0-0), 4/14/78 and began playing baseball together around the age of seven. Since then, they have been teammates at nearly every Steve Bazoski (7 inn.) vs. Portland (W, 9-0) level including little league, high school (College Park), summer ball (Walla Walla Sweets, WCL) and college (UW). 3/30/74 This summer, both were in the Cape Cod League but on different teams. MacIver was an All-Star for Wareham, Gary Huson (7 inn.) vs. San Jose St. while DeMers won a championship with Brewster. The pair figure to be playing their last season together as both (W, 6-0), 3/22/69 are considered high draft prospects for 2018. DeMers and MacIver also say their other best friends of their close-knit Larry Morrow (7 inn.) vs. Puget Sound group include Oregon State’s Trevor Larnach and California’s Jeffrey Mitchell. (W, 14-0), 4/21/58 MAJOR LEAGUE CONNECTIONS: AJ Graffanino and Joe Wainhouse are both sons of former George Kritsonis vs. Seattle Pacific Major Leaguers. Graffanino’s dad, Tony, spent parts of 13 years in the Majors from 1996 to 2009. He hit .265 in (W, 18-0), 4/8/57 981 games. Wainhouse’s dad, Dave, spent seven seasons (spanning 1991-2000) as a pitcher with five different Bob Peterson vs. Idaho (W, 7-0), 1951 teams in the Majors. He broke in with Montreal in 1991 and ended his career with St. Louis. Dylan Lamb is the brother of former Husky and current Arizona Diamondbacks’ All-Star Jake Lamb. NEW FOR MEGGS: For the first time in his nine years at Washington, Lindsay Meggs will not be coaching one of his sons on the field. During his first four years from 2010-13, oldest son, Joe, was and everyday outfielder on the roster. From 2014-17, youngest son,Jack , manned the outfield for the Dawgs. Jack is currently playing professionally after being a 10th round selection by the Oakland A’s in the 2017 MLB Draft, while Joe is in his third season serving at the Huskies’ Director of Baseball Operations. WHO ARE THESE HUSKIES: • The Huskies returned 20 players who were on the 2017 roster and welcomed in 15 newcomers. Fielders: Washington returned three All-Pac-12 honorable mention players in the field inAJ Graffanino at shortstop, Levi Jordan at second base and Willie MacIver, who was slated to move from third base to catcher and first base this season. Besides that, the Huskies replaced regulars at every spot in the lineup. Pitchers: The Huskies had to have to replace 2017 ace Noah Bremer and bullpen stalwart Greg Minier, but besides that, returned mostly intact. Joe DeMers, who was honorable mention All-Pac-12 in 2017, assumed the role as team ace. SQUAD BREAKDOWN: Among the 35 players on the 2018 Husky roster, there are 5 seniors, 5 juniors, 11 sophomores and 14 freshmen. The squad includes 19 returners and 16 newcomers (11 true freshmen, 3 redshirt-freshmen and 2 upperclass transfers). The roster includes players from four different states and Canada: 19 are from Washington, 12 are from California, two from British Columbia and one each from Delaware and Oregon. Washington's baseball roster has traditionally been heavily dominated by in-state players. In Meggs first season in 2010, 34 of 35 players hailed from Washington. All 19 players from Washington this year come from west of the Cascade Mountains, (the western half of the state). HUSKIES IN THE MLB DRAFT: Since Coach Lindsay Meggs arrived at Washington, Huskies have heard their names called in the MLB Draft 29 times (complete list on pg. 10). Last season, four Huskies were selected by MLB teams, with the first to hear his name called being catcherJoey Morgan in the third round by the Detroit Tigers. Pitcher Noah Bremer (6th, Rangers) and outfielderJoe Meggs (10th, Athletics) also heard their names called in the first ten rounds of the draft. Left-handed pitcherGreg Minier was the final Husky selected in 2017, hearing his name in the 32nd round by Chicago. In 2014, a record eight Huskies were selected by MLB teams. On the current roster, four Huskies were drafted prior to arriving on campus at Washington. AJ Graffanino was picked in the 26th round of the 2015 draft by the . In 2016, three heard their names called during the draft: Ben Baird (20th, Indians), Josh Burgmann (30th, Cardinals) and Christian Jones (31st, Red Sox). PRE-SEASON POLLS ... WHO NEEDS 'EM: The Huskies were picked to finish seventh out of 11 teams by the Pac-12 coaches in the pre-season poll and ended up third. Lately, being picked to finish in the bottom half of the poll has proved to be fortuitous for the Dawgs. In 2016, the Huskies were picked eighth and ended up second, while in 2014 they were picked 10th and also ended up second. Oregon State was the pick to win the conference, garnering 10 first-place votes, while Stanford was picked second and received the other first-place vote. With renovated Husky Ballpark -- the most beautiful setting for college baseball in the West -- and one of the world’s most-esteemed academic institutions at his disposal, Meggs has molded the University of Washington into an ideal destination for student-athletes to come and hone their skills on the diamond while receiving a top-notch education. In 2017, the Huskies were 28-26 overall and contended for a post-season berth until the very end. Meggs’ Huskies were ranked as high as 10th during the year and were once again one of the nation’s best defensive teams. The Huskies had a .982 fielding percentage to lead the Pac-12 and rank third nationally. They committed 36 errors during the season, the fewest by a Husky squad in the 40 years that defensive stats have been archived. Jason Kelly Donegal Fergus At the conclusion of the season, eight different Huskies received All-Pac-12 recognition, including three to the first Associate Head Coach Assistant Coach team (Joey Morgan, Noah Bremer, MJ Hubbs) and one to the All-Defensive Team (Morgan). Four Huskies also heard Pitching Coach (6th year) Recruiting Coordinator their names called for the 2017 MLB Draft, led by Morgan in the fourth round, to bring the total to 29 players selected Catchers & Third Base Coach in Meggs’ eight seasons of leading UW. (5th year) An important aspect of playing for Meggs is succeeding in the classroom and the recent Husky teams have reached historic academic heights. The squad posted a 3.29 cumulative grade point average after autumn quarter in 2016 to Others record the highest team GPA in UW Baseball history. Student Managers Meggs has also led the Huskies to the NCAA Regionals in two of the last four seasons, most recently the Nashville D.J. Lidyard (4th year) Regional in 2016. The Huskies were picked eighth in the pre-season coaches poll, but exceeded expectations by finishing second in the Pac-12 with a 33-23 overall record, 17-13 in Conference action. They were the No. 3 seed at Director of Ops Vanderbilt and went 1-2, beating and eliminating the host Commodores in the tournament. Four Huskies earned All- Joe Meggs (3rd year) Conference honors, including Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year, Troy Rallings, who was also a first team All-American and a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist. Athletic Trainer Iain Mistrot (2nd year) In 2015, Washington finished with a 29-25 overall record, going 14-16 in the Pac-12 Conference. Under Meggs, two Dave Nakama players were selected to the All-Pac-12 Conference team and four players were selected in the MLB draft. Austin Rei Volunteer Assistant Coach Strength and Conditioning was the first Husky, selected in the third round going 81st overall. Bishop was taken in the same round, 94th overall. Gabriel Derman (1st year) Davis was selected next in the 23rd round, followed by Troy Rallings in the 36th round on the final day. Outfielders & Hitting Coach (1st year) In 2014, Meggs led the Huskies to one of their best seasons in school history. The team finished with a record of 41- 17-1, 21-9 in Pac-12 play. It was the fifth time in UW history the Huskies achieved 40 or more wins, the first time since 2003. The team reached its highest rankings in school history, checking in at fifth in the Baseball America, Perfect Meggs’ Coaching Career Game and Collegiate Baseball polls during the season. For his efforts, Meggs was named the 2014 Pac-12 Coach of Washington (9 years) the Year. After being picked 10th out of 11 teams in the Pac-12 pre-season coaches poll, Meggs guided the Huskies Year Overall Pct. Conf. Place Postseason to a second-place finish in the Conference, their best Pac-12 finish since 2004. It was the second most league wins in school history and most since the north and south merged in 1999. UW returned to the NCAA post-season for the first 2018 30-23 .566 20-10 3rd time in a decade. They finished 2015 29-25 .537 14-16 7th the season by winning 15 of 22, including series wins over World Series participant Oregon St., defending national 2014 41-17-1 .703 21-9 2nd NCAA Regionals champion Arizona, NCAA participant Arizona St. and a sweep over Washington St. 2013 24-32 .429 15-15 6th The 2012 season saw the Huskies make another big step forward, finishing the season with a 30-25 overall record, 2012 30-25 .545 13-17 7th their best finish in half a decade. 2011 17-37 .315 6-21 10th 2010 28-28 .500 7-17 9th In his first season, Meggs improved the Huskies’ wins total over the prior year by five, finishing the season 28-28 overall.
