HOPEFUL: 19-year-old Mim has joined a women’s squad for women Police recall guidance to speak up about their problems listing ‘standard Muslim beliefs’ as signs of extremism

Counter terror police are recalling official guidance which suggested that ‘Muslims who believe they are oppressed’ could be a sign of extremism. Human rights groups condemned the 12- page document produced by counter terrorism police in south-east England for undermining ‘free expression and discrimination’. Titled ‘Safeguarding young people and adults from ideological extremism’, the document lists a number of groups and examples of ‘extremist or worrying behaviour to look for’. In reference to the banned Islamist terror group Al Muhajiroun the document provides a list of ‘What you might see and hear’. Human rights groups such as Liberty and CAGE as well as the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) claim that the guidance is worryingly broad and includes ‘normative Muslim beliefs’. Concerns have been raised that if a person of a Muslim background were for example to speak of China’s persecution of Uighur Muslims or of discrimination against Muslims in India, then this could be mistakenly linked to radicalisation. The guidance was issued as part of the government’s Prevent strategy, a programme designed to tackle both far- right and religious radicalisation. Under the Prevent scheme, there is a statutory duty for public sector workers, such as NHS staff, teachers and social workers, to identify those deemed to be at risk of radicalisation. Human rights group Liberty said it was ‘outrageous to imply a Prevent referral as warranted where someone expresses the view that Muslims are oppressed’. Pakistan has suspended the release of an award- winning film, after an Islamist political party objected to its portrayal of a struggling cleric. The Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) said the film "might lead [people] to deviate from Islam and the prophet", with officials warning screening it could lead to unrest. ‘Zindagi Tamasha’ (Circus of Life) is about a man shunned after a video of him dancing at a wedding goes viral. The film's director said he never intended to offend anyone. ‘Zindagi Tamasha’ had its world premier at the prestigious Busan International Film Festival last year, where it was awarded the top fiction prize. Bobby Vanzie, a former British and Commonwealth lightweight champion has just opened a new boxing academy in the heart of Bradford. Bobby "Viper" Vanzie was born and raised in Bradford and is a British former professional boxer who competed from 1994 to 2005. He held the British and Commonwealth lightweight titles between 1998 and 2001. On the academy’s inauguration on Sunday 19th January, joining Bobby Vanzie were champion cricketer Adil Rashid and boxer . MP Imran Hussain, Bradford’s former rugby legend Ikram Butt were also in attendance. The academy is the brainchild of local businessman Wasim Rafiq and his friend Tyrone Vanzie (Bobby’s brother). Committed to the idea of creating a local authentic boxing club to help youngsters progress in the sport, they say they provide “real coaching” from “real boxers”. Following a complete overhaul of a semi- derelict building, which was being used for illegal activities just off Leeds Road, they transformed 28 Downham Street into a building of hope. Together Bobby and his brothers Tyrone and Ashley Vanzie (both boxers), Wasim Rafiq, Moss Sheikh, Mohammed Adil, Amar Rashid, Nathan and a host of other group members worked painstakingly hard to make a success of this initiative. The sole - benefit improving young peoples lives in the community by giving them opportunities to be part of this life changing sport.
