I s r a e l i M i l i t a r y F i c t i o n : A N a r r a t i ve i n Tr a n s fo r m a t i o n Keren Tova Rubinstein, BA Hons (History and Hebrew Studies) Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts Department for Jewish Studies and Culture The University of Melbourne, Australia December 2003 Israeli Military Fiction Israeli Military Fiction: A Narrative in Transform ation Synopsis The current study investigates changing attitudes to militarism within Israeli fiction and society during the tumultuous decades following the Six-Day War. Events leading to the current state of Israeli society will be traced in order to illustrate the way in which change occurs. The shifts in Israeli history and society during these decades will be examined alongside developments in Israeli literature over this time. Therefore, eight works of fiction have been selected to lie at the heart of the study. These fictional texts, all of which centre around the Israeli military experience, convey an erosion of personal, national, and ideological certainties. The analysis of these works demands three areas of exploration: the depiction of the soldier as he interacts with others in the civilian setting, the depiction of the soldier as he interacts with other soldiers in the military sphere, and ”post-Zionist‘ military fiction produced in recent decades. These three areas of exploration entail an interrogation of gender, nationalism, and ”post-Zionism‘ in contemporary Israel. The works examined in the third chapter contain commentary not only upon the social reality of their authors, but also upon the way in which Israeli literature engages with the issues that inform its existence. The study is fuelled by the need to understand the links between history and fiction. The fiction is seen as an attempt to grapple with the strain of the ongoing conflict in Israel. Some authors have explored this through a re- narration of past chapters in Israeli history, while others comment on the events of their time. Some authors have identified this strain as a diminishing masculinity; others convey this burden as a direct corollary of shifting truths about Israeli nationalism. ii Israeli Military Fiction Declaration of Authenticity This thesis comprises only my original work except where indicated otherwise. As Israel‘s tenuous grip on territory was subsequently, so too were challenged the tenuous connections between the individuals and the ongoing struggle challenged. Israeli military fiction is a window onto the ever- changing society of the country. The product of the meeting between the military and fictional realms can only be understood as part of the broader framework of history, society and literature. These three fields of knowledge consequently support the current study. Each chapter discusses Israeli military fiction according to these themes. The works will be located within a historical, social, and literary context in order to draw the links between the very real military experience, and the more fluid collective imagination. Inevitably, this approach produces a number of questions. What is the significance of the martial experience in Israeli collective consciousness? What has the military come to represent in Israeli literature? How does the connection between citizenship and military experience translate into fiction? Where does fiction dealing with the Israeli military experience emerge as an openly critical body of work within Israeli fiction? How does it connect with other critical works of Israeli fiction? An awareness of these questions underpins the current study, which is an attempt to grapple with the powerful presence of militarism in Israeli imagination. An examination of military fiction necessitates two levels of exploration. The first is a deconstruction of masculinity, informed by gender studies. The second level of exploration addresses challenges to nationalism, concentrating the experience of individuals as subjects of the state. Both levels of analysis, when applied to stories written after 1948 about soldiers, expose the shedding of old presumptions and the questioning of the ideology and culture that dominate life 1 Israeli Military Fiction Introduction in Israel. The changing fields of masculinity and nationalism mark a collective transition in Israel. As with other themes in Israeli literature, the representation of the army has undergone several transformations that correspond to historical events. Palmach literature, written between the 1930s and 1950s, told the story of the struggle to gain independence, and focused on the glory contained in social and national involvement. There is a progression from a state-fostering attitude in Palmach military fiction, towards a more critical stance in ”New Wave‘ and ”Different Wave‘ literature. These critical writings can be loosely perceived as modernist and postmodernist fictions, although as will emerge in the following analyses, these are problematic terms. The military experience in Israeli identity has continued to be a vessel through which the afflictions of Israeli life can be communicated, although ”New Wave‘ fiction has stripped it of its former glory. The military experience now represents a gradual erosion of the binding forces within Israeli society. Fiction written between the 1960s and the early 1980s figured the army as a locus for the woeful erosion of Zionism. In many of the novels written since that time, the soldier embodies a ”post-Zionist‘ condition, and is an expression of the loss of meaning of assumed axiomatic truths about Israeli life. The military is but one of the cultural symbols whose currency has changed. Generations born after the establishment of the state have ceased to accept the ”New Jew‘ - the fighting hero - as an acceptable model for their identity, and this has been expressed in the works examined in this study. Although fiction that places military experience as its central subject has dwindled since the Palmach years, Israeli literature‘s focus has tightened and it has nonetheless become a critical body of literature. In other words, Israeli military fiction has diminished in quantity, but has become more provocative. 2 Israeli Military Fiction Introduction 1960-2003: Social, Historical and Academic Changes This study begins with the ”New Wave‘ shift in Israeli literature, which occurred after the 1950s.1 The ”New Wave‘ in Hebrew fiction was initiated by the ”Generation of the State‘, termed as such by Gabriel Moked.2 The Holocaust and the War of Independence were no longer formative experiences for the members of this generation. The 1956 Sinai Campaign was one prominent experience for this generation. Perceived as a war of choice, the Sinai Campaign featured Israeli soldiers‘ first confrontation with Palestinian refugees, in the Gaza Strip. Israel cooperated with England and France in this campaign, an alliance that prompted questions about the colonial aspects of Israel‘s military activity. The trial of Adolf Eichmann in 1961 was a further significant event during this time. Vis-à-vis the retelling of Holocaust survivors‘ experiences during the war, the trial exposed its hitherto suppressed horrors, and forced the questioning of the negation of the Diaspora experience in Zionist rhetoric.

He consults with authors to put the “hard” science in “Hard SF” and has written both fiction and nonfiction for Baen Books.

    MOSHE SHAMIR (Playwright) (1921-2004) was born in Jewish Theatre Collaborative & The Harold Schnitzer Safed, Israel, and spent most of his life in Tel Aviv. He was a Family Program in Judaic Studies present: prolific novelist, journalist, playwright, children’s author, literary critic and political figure. He Walked Through the Israel Onstage: Israeli Society through Drama Fields is based on his own 1947 novel, which was awarded the Ussishkin Prize. Shamir was a member of Kibbutz Mishmar HaEmek from 1944 to 1946 A member of the He Walked Palmach, in 1948, he founded the soldiers` weekly, Bamahaneh, and was its first editor. He edited it until he Through the Fields was dismissed at the request of David Ben-Gurion for By Moshe Shamir publishing an article about a celebration of the disbanding of Palmach . He served on the editorial board of the daily Maariv in the 50s. Shamir was a member of Knesset, the Israeli Parliament, from 1977 to 1981, his politics shifting from Mapam (labor) to Likud to participating in the founding of Tehiya, after the Camp David Treaty of 1979. The most prominent representative of his generation of writers Shamir was awarded the Bialik Prize (1955), the Israel Prize (1988) and the ACUM Prize for Lifetime Achievement (2002). His best known historical novels include The King of Flesh and Blood and David’s Stranger. His best known topical works are He Walked through the Fields, With His Own Hands , and For Naked Thou Art . His books generally deal with contemporary problems of Israel as seen from the viewpoint of the younger generation.

As President and a Trustee of the Asper Foundation, she is a driving force behind projects in Canada and Israel and spearheaded the creation of the Canadian Museum of Human Rights in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her commitment to the Hebrew University ranges from serving on the Board of Governors to being a member of the Canadian Friends National Board. The Asper Centre for Entrepreneurship at the School of Business Administration continues to flourish thanks to the support of the Asper Foundation; in addition Gail is passionate about student support, the Rothberg International School and the Institute for Medical Research Israel-Canada. Gail received her law degree from the University of Manitoba in 1984, and joined Canwest Global Communications Corporation as General Counsel and Corporate Secretary in 1989, a position she held until 2008. She is currently President of the Canwest Foundation. Today Gail’s community involvement includes numerous positions to which she brings her passion and dedication. Daughter of the late Izzy Asper, she realized his dream to build the Canadian Museum of Human Rights, serving as a member of its inaugural Board and as Chair of its National Campaign.     "Tracing Back my Own Footsteps": Space, Walking and Memory in "Shiv'a Mehem" by Nathan Shaham Ayala Amir Absract This article focuses on Natan Shaham's short story "Shiva Mehem" ("Seven of Them"). Written in 1948, the story presents the moral dilemma faced by a group of warriors caught in a minefield. Combining insights from various discourses (ecocriticism, postcolonialism and the emerging field of geocriticism), the article explores the theme of walking both in the story and in the wider context of Shaham's writing and the ideology of the 1948 generation. The exploration of the various aspect of the story's main image, the landmine and its effect on the body's movement in space, leads to viewing the mine image as a thematic and formal nexus connecting time and space, personal and historical time, past memory and the present. Through this powerful image that conveys the experience of the generation facing life in their own sovereign state, "Shiva Mehem" also illustrates the deep connection between Shaham's writing and his movement in or upon the land, both as a writer and as a warrior. I. Walking I will begin by bringing together three writers who reflect on the nature of walking. The first, a writer, philosopher, naturalist and walker, the prophet of today's environmental thinking, Henry David Thoreau, writes in his essay "Walking": I have met with but one or two persons in the course of my life who understood the art of Walking, that is, of taking walks,—who had a genius, so to speak, for sauntering: which word is beautifully derived “from idle people who roved about the country, in the Middle Ages, and asked charity, under pretence of going à la Sainte Terre,” to the Holy Land, till the children exclaimed, “There goes a Sainte-Terrer,” 1 a Saunterer,—a Holy-Lander […] Some, however, would derive the word from sans terre, without land or a home, which, therefore, in the good sense, will mean, having no particular home, but equally at home everywhere.

Ernest Hemingway and many of his contemporaries wrote about the conflicts that defined a lot of the early twentieth century. I will, in this thesis, look at three short stories about war by Hemingway, and compare them to how other writers and historians portray war and conflicts. Hemingway and the First World War Firstly, I would like to look at Hemingway in the context of the First World War. Hemingway famously did not get to serve in the US army, marines, or navy because of bad eyesight.

Bilsing, Mors ab Alto: The Dangerous Power of Women’s Images in Second World War Nose Art The depiction of women’s images on military aeroplanes became popular during World War II when soldier-artists were informally commissioned to paint pictures on planes in order to personalise the machines for the crews who flew in them. The most famous images are of playful, obviously sexualised women whose illustrated presence on the planes provided the troops with, among other things, reminders of home. Despite criticism from feminist scholars for its objectification of the feminine, nose art is a complex cultural icon which has its roots in ancient history and which appropriates sexuality as a specific form of female power during a predominantly masculine event. Ehrhart and the Extremes of Foreign Policy, Ideology, and the American Hegemony In the years following the Vietnam War, we have seen and heard many conflicting images and stories about the meaning and importance of the conflict. Television shows such as China Beach, and movies like The Deer Hunter and Forest Gump have radically re-imaged the war and the events surrounding it. However, when we compare this modern-day myth-making, much of it engineered in Hollywood and the editorial press, with much of the literature produced by veterans of the war, a startling insight becomes apparent. While the popular media seems intent on repackaging the meaning of the war, the literature of the veterans seems intent on exploring the meaning of the war and defining the effect the war had on American consciousness.

Could I please have any recent general information on the treatment of Circassians in Israel? Circassians represent a tiny minority of the population, and it is difficult to find general up to date information specifically regarding the treatment of Circassians in Israel. For administrative purposes, Circassians are usually included with the Druze community. According to the US Department of State, in the year 2006 the Israeli Druze community numbered approximately 100,000 and the Circassian community numbered some 3,000. In reports, Circassians are often included with the non-Jewish “Arab minority” population – “Druze, Bedouin, Circassian and otherwise”.
