If you like this is for you.By Stephen Vincent KemptonAaron "Pat " Boyette was a classic illustrator from the Milton Caniff school who deserves much wider recognition. Boyette used a clean spartan style with large splotches of black ink similar to that first employed by Noel Sickles and championed by Milton Caniff, Frank Robbins and .Pat Boyette who worked almost exclusively for the small publisher Charlton . Charlton had probably the worst quality printing and reproduction in the entire comic industry in 1960's and 1970's. During this era DC, Marvel, Harvey and Archie all had all their comics published by the same plant in Sparta,Illinois. were all published in house by Charlton. In fact Chatton started their comic line just so that they would have some thing else to print on their press when their magazines were not being published. Even as a kid I knew their was something "funky" about their comics. Colors were always printed out of the lines and off key. The paper itself was rough and uneven and looked like it was trimmed with an ax.To say the books are an upgrade is a vast understatement. The reproduction and restoration are excellent and Pat Boyette's art finally gets the treatment it deserves. This is volume #3 of the Charlton run of The Phantom, but is also volume #5 out of #7 of the complete The Phantom silver age comics that Hermes Press is printing. It reprints The Phantom #48 through #56 and The Pat Boyete covers for each. The small non- Phantom stories and text pages are not included. The art is 100% Pat Boyette. The Phantom #48 features one 19 page story. Starting with #49 all The Phantom's had three 7 page stories each. The half a dozen stories in which Joe Gill's name appeared on are aknowlged in the front of the book, but according to the Database every story in this collection was written by Joe Gill. Mr. Gill was a very prolific writer for Charlton who at one point seemed to be the writer for about 80% of Charlton comics output. The lack of any real credit for Mr.Gill is the one fault this collection might have. The Introduction for the last volume was an Interview with the late Pat Boyette, but this volume features an interview with creator of the and writer for decades of both the Daily Sunday strip. While it is informative what would have been realy helpful would be an Interview or Information on Joe Gill. Perhaps next volume. The Charlton Spotlight has printed an excellent Interview with Mr. Gill which might be available.Unlike the stories written for the strips which often had American settings these stories are mostly all set in the jungles of Bengali. A few exception would be the one set in the lost world of New Rome and one set in Europe. The series published in this volume are all from 1972 and 1973.Although most of the stories are about jungle life or intruders to the jungle, one story features aliens visiting Bengali and another more realistic story is about what happens when a NASA manned rocket crashes in the jungle. The supporting cast of The Phantom includes his faithful Pygmy friend and Diane Palmer his love interest. The book also makes heavy use of The Phantom's ward Rex King and his native friend Tomm. This gives us a child protagonist that younger readers can identify with. Rex was introduced in 1966, in later years The Phantom would marry Diane and have twins which would fill the same role occupied by Rex and Tomm. The seven page format seems rather restrictive and some stories seem to barely get started before ending rather abruptly in one or two panels.Overall this is a wonderful volume and my favorite book of Pat Boyette art so far. Highly Recommended.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Phantom gets the high-quality treatment he deserves!By Uncle MickeyThis is the ONLY way to enjoy the Charlton Comics adventures of the Phantom. The low-budget production values used in printing the original comics did a great disservice to Pat Boyette's already-quirky artwork, although it was easily as good as that of Wilson McCoy in the comic strips. This bodes well for the rest of the series, which will feature "Phan" favorites and , who also brought high-quality artwork to the line of comics. The great price on lured me in, but the quality of Hermes Press editions will keep me coming back for more!3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great fun at a good priceBy doc spindriftWell worth the price [$15} for a great fun time. The art is okay and the stories are short . You get about 9 comics so this is a good value.

The early 1970s comic book adventures of The Phantom return in full, glorious color! Hermes Press is collecting all 74 issues of The Phantom comic books which ran from 1962-1977, and this is the third volume of the Charlton years. The Charlton comic book version of the grand-daddy of costumed heroes, The Who Walks, is available again, digitally remastered to look better than the original books. Reprints issues #48 through #56.
