Senator Jose Peralta Internship Program

The office of Senator Jose Peralta offers internship opportunities year-round for qualified high school and college students. The program is offered in the Senator’s district office in East Elmhurst, . The 13th Senatorial District encompasses Corona, Elmhurst, East Elmhurst, Jackson Heights and segments of Woodside and Astoria. Senator Peralta represents the most diverse district of all 62 senatorial districts.

The internship program provides students with an opportunity to observe and participate in the workings of the State Senate. Interns become a working part of the office and are offered opportunities to assist professional staff in public events, press, administrative tasks, constituent services and community outreach. Duties will vary based on experience.

Internships are not paid.

Requirements:

• Summer interns must commit to a minimum of three full days per week • Fall and Spring interns must commit to a minimum of three part-time days per week, hours are flexible • Proficient use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher) • Strong preference for candidates to speak and write Spanish

Interns will be assigned to assist staff in one of four departments:

• Policy Department - provides legislative analysis and policy research. • Community Relations - plans community-based events such as town hall meetings, public forums and cultural events. • Communications Department - prepares speeches, press conferences, talking points and press releases. • Constituent Department - provides constituents with assistance and referrals on issues such as housing, immigration, healthcare, sanitation and transportation.
