The film follows three teenage boys, Andrew, Harley, and Appachey, as they struggle with isolation, broken families, and lack of opportunity, providing an immersive and realistic picture of growing up poor in America. Winner of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary, Rich Hill premieres on Independent Lens on Monday, January 5, 2015,10:00-11:30 PM ET (check local listings) on PBS. Rich Hill, Missouri, population 1393, is seventy miles south of Kansas City and fifteen miles east of the Kansas border. Once a thriving mining town, Rich Hill’s decline began when the coal was mined out shortly after World War II. Today, like many other small towns in America, it has fallen on hard times, as have the families who still call it home. First cousins Tracy Droz Tragos and Andrew Droz Palermo share a deep bond and affection for Rich Hill, the hometown of their parents. -

Park City, UT — The nonprofit Sundance Institute announced today the showcase of new independent feature films selected across all categories for the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. The Festival hosts screenings in Park City, Salt Lake City and at Sundance Mountain Resort, from January 23–February 2, 2020. The Sundance Film Festival is Sundance Institute’s flagship public program, widely regarded as the largest American independent film festival and attended by more than 120,000 people and 1,300 accredited press, and powered by more than 2,000 volunteers last year. Sundance Institute also presents public programs throughout the year and around the world, including Festivals in Hong Kong and London, an international short film tour, an indigenous shorts program, a free summer screening series in Utah, and more. Alongside these public programs, the majority of the nonprofit Institute's resources support independent artists around the world as they make and develop new work, via Labs, direct grants, fellowships, residencies and other strategic and tactical interventions. -

Writer/director Hannah Fidell explores the struggles of young love as it begins to face the next steps into adulthood. Taissa Farmiga and Ben Rosenfield give warm, genuine performances as Mel and Dan, alongside Lindsay Burdge (star of Fidell’s A TEACHER) as a colleague of Dan’s who entices him in more ways than one. HANNAH FIDELL DISCUSSES 6 YEARS I wrote 6 Years focusing on the relationship of two young adults. Who hasn’t had a first love? And who hasn’t gone through a breakup with said first love? (for those of you who are married to that first person...please ignore…) More than anything though, I modeled Dan and Mel’s world on my group of friends in college. Although, the fighting and the physical violence, that was pure fiction. The script was in great hands with Taissa and Ben. -

Three books to celebrate the University Home News and events Wednesday 3 July 2019 Michelle Chalklin-Sinclair and Judith Cullen with the special University of Otago anniversary edition Fonebook Special University of Otago 150th Fonebook A special 150th University of Otago edition of the Dunedin Fonebook was launched at the University Staff Cub last month. Produced by Dunedin locals Judith Cullen and Michelle Chalklin-Sinclair, the small-but- perfectly-formed coffee table book in pale blue Otago colours is a celebration of University life in photographs, artwork, poetry and recipes. Amongst Michelle’s photographs are works by former Frances Hodgkins Fellows Neil Frazer, Heather Straka and Scott Eady, and writing by former Burns Fellows Emma Neale and Peter Olds and current Fellow Emily Duncan. Judith’s gourmet offerings include takes on some student favourites such as Southern Cheese Rolls, and three of the recipes were shot on location at a Castle Street flat. You can buy the Fonebook through the Dunedin Fonebook facebook page and Dunedin retailers including the University campus shop and the University Book Shop. Otago: 150 Years of New Zealand’s First University by Alison Clarke This very readable history took Dr Clarke five years part-time to research and write. To help identify photographs and gather anecdotes she launched a blog, which is still available to read on the 150th website https://www.otago.ac.nz/150/history/blog/ An experienced author and historian, Dr Clarke says the biggest challenge was dealing with the huge amount of material and keeping it to one volume. The book is divided into sections on the Humanities, Sciences, Health Sciences and Commerce, and other aspects of university life including the evolving student body, student life at Otago, the founding of the university, the staff and the other campuses in Invercargill, Christchurch and Wellington. -

They have also invested over a million dollars of Principal’s Report their own funds into developing an animated resource for schools to teach the history of Aotearoa New Zealand, not starting with Abel Tasman’s sighting or Captain Cook’s arrival on our shores as marking the ‘discovery’ of New Zealand, but with the planned and repeated voyages of our Pasifika ancestors to this country. Using their knowledge of astronomy, ocean currents, and their observations of bird and animal behaviour, our earliest settlers were able to sail crafts, stocked with the necessities of life, to Aotearoa, and back again to their home countries. These voyages were happening hundreds of years before the arrival of Europeans.
