STAN BENGE – HEAD COACH

Coach Benge played High School basketball at Ben Davis graduating in 1972. He went on to play at Mari- an College. He started his coaching career at Roncalli High School coaching the boys Junior Varsity team for two years. He then returned home to Ben Davis to Coach the boy’s junior varsity team for two years.

His first stint as Ben Davis Head girls’ basketball coach started in 1985 and ended in 2011. During that time his teams won four State titles (2000, 2001, 2009, 2010) and is one of only four girls’ basketball coaches in IHSAA history to win four titles. From 2008 through 2011 Benge coached Ben Davis to an unprecedented run of success. The 2008-09 team finished 30-0 capturing not only the Class 4A state title, but the USA Today National Championship as well. As a result, Benge was named the 2009 Naismith National Coach of the Year. The 2009-10 squad finished 28-0 and won another Class 4A state title, becoming the first basketball program (boys or girls) in State history to have back-to- back undefeated championship seasons. Benge was named the 2010 National Coach of the Year by Max Preps. The following season, Ben Davis won 23 straight games before falling in the regional final. The program won 81 consecutive games over the three seasons, which is the longest winning streak in Indiana high school basketball history (boys or girls).

Benge then went to be an Assistant Girls Basketball Coach at IUPUI for two years before returning back to Roncalli High School for seven years during that time Roncalli won their first County Championship, a Sectional, and Regional. His record at Roncalli was 123-52. Bringing his High School coaching record to 642-178 (.783), ranks fourth in all time wins among Indiana girls high school basketball coaches and first among active coaches.

Certified Athletic Trainers are allied health professionals who are responsible for the health care of ac- tive people. Certified athletic trainers are educated in the areas of injury prevention, injury and illness evaluation, first aid, injury treatment, rehabilitation, nutrition, conditioning and reconditioning, sup- portive taping, bracing and padding, and athletic healthcare administration. The profession practices in a variety of settings such as schools, colleges, professional athletic teams, clinics, industry, health clubs, the military, performing arts companies, and with police or firefighters associations. The profession of athletic training was organized in 1950 through the National Athletic Trainers Associa- tion and was recognized by the American Medical Association as an allied health profession in 1990. Na- tionally, athletic training is regulated by the Board of Certification (BOC) which regulates the profession for certification (Certified Athletic Trainer) and sets standards for maintaining high standards in the pro- fession. Athletic trainers must be licensed by the Indiana Health Professional Bureau to practice in the state of Indiana. Athletic trainers must attain an average of 30 hours of continuing education per year to main- tain certification and licensing in the state of Indiana. Athletic Training continues to retain the respect of other health professions and athletic associations. The Ben Davis High School athletic training program not only serves the athletes of the high school, but also helps with middle school athletes by appointment. Several Ben Davis students work as athletic training student assistants and benefit from the rich athletic tradition of Ben Davis High School. More than fifteen Ben Davis graduates have studied athletic training, earned the BOC certification, and cur- rently practice in the field of athletic training. Other former student athletic trainers work in the field of medicine as nurses, emergency medical technicians, physical therapists and medical technicians
