Habib Subhan Department of English, Aligarh Muslim University, India ABSTRACT: The postmodern era has observed a shift from what has so long been considered as fixed and static to nothing is constant or fixed like concepts. Taking such notion as the parameter postcolonial theorists, feminists, poststructuralists have tried to see and analyze various issues from different angles. Issues like identity, subjectivity, representation, authentic voices have got new perspectives. Like culture, body or sex is a site of conflict where individual’s identity is being contested endlessly. The ‘third gender’, which has long been marginalized or deprived of their identity, representation, true and authentic voice in the main stream of social and cultural milieu deserves the critical attention. ‘Third gender’ or the ‘People of In-between’ are considered not belonging to the general binary division of gender - male and female. Since long their plight is more like the ‘subaltern’. The Bollywood cinema has long been portraying the character of ‘third gender’ in various films. These films clearly reveal that their representation is biased, sensitive and stereotyping. The violation and violence, centered on issues of sex and body, is not only sexual violence in nature but it is a kind of denial of identity and voice in the society. They are judged and studied in terms of sexual behavior.

The third gender in Indian subcontinent most commonly is identified as “Hijra” over the period of years through media representations and misrepresentations has come to be associated with either as neither male or female, impotent men who dress as females or deceitful characters. Adding the dismal socio-political and economic conditions of third gender in India and their traditional way of earning through alms, the stereotypical character of “Hijra” gets further institutionalized. This paper will however try to break from the stereotypical clutches of portraying the typical clichéd third gender on celluloid and try to analyze some path breaking movies which have been successful in representing very realistic aspects of third gender. The reference period for the study will be more than two decades from 1990-2010, whereby two representational movies from each decade and will studied and critically examined. The paper will seek to focus on the less stereotypical portrayals of third gender and will try to find if there is a gradual shift from the stereotypical generalizations in portrayal of third gender on Indian celluloid.

Burqavaganza Burqavaganza – Banned in Pakistan staged in BHARANGAM A bit of Info* compiled by Manohar Khushalani Scenes from the Pakistani Farce Burqavaganza At the recently concluded BHARANGAM, the Theatre Fest organized by the National School of Drama, a Pakistani play,Burqavaganza, produced by Ajoka Theatre Group, was staged at Kamani Auditorium, New Delhi. The play had been banned in Pakistan last year, because of its irreverence to the Burqa, a traditional veil and gown worn by conservative Muslim women. The play is especially relevant and contemporary because the controversy over women covering either their head with a Hijab or also their face and the whole body with a Burqa rages even in the Muslim majority countries which were known for their secular ideals. For example, Hijab, an obligatory code of dress in Islam, was banned in public buildings, universities, schools and government buildings in Muslim-majority Turkey shortly after a 1980 military coup. Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan (whose wife and daughters are veiled) had promised before his first electoral victory in 2002 that the “unfair ban” would be abolished. Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the far-right Nationalist Action Party (MHP) opposition party have thrashed out a deal on a compromise head- cover to be allowed on campus after decades of an all-out ban. Under the deal agreed to by the two parties, a day earlier, women at universities are permitted to cover their heads by tying the headscarf in the traditional way beneath the chin. While the Turkish PM insists that respect for basic human rights is his sole motivation in pushing through the amendments, some believe that the move would cause immense problems and deal a blow to the separation of state and religion, one of the founding principles of the modern Turkish Republic.

  • Summer Whine,,Burqavaganza,The Owl and the Pussy Cat
Keval Arora’s Kolumn – Summer Whine Keval Arora’s Kolumn Summer Whine When summer comes, can summer theatre workshops be far behind?’ is a question that the English poet Shelley could well have asked, had he been in Delhi this summer instead of roaming around Florence one autumn some centuries ago. That’s the question he would certainly have asked had he been a Delhi parent facing a prospect far more unnerving than falling leaves, storms and winter shutdown — the prospect of kids moping around at home all day, each day of the vacations, with nothing to do. The question that Shelley did ask in his ode to the west wind (“if winter comes, can spring be far behind?”) seems far removed from parental anxieties, but it really isn’t. Well, in at least one respect, it isn’t. Both questions – the one that he asked and the one he didn’t – promise deliverance by embedding solutions in the very phrasing of the problem. If winter can be quickened by the prospect of spring, summer can certainly be lightened by a slew of theatre workshops that pop up from nowhere. And, considering you get theatre workshops in summer in a way that you can’t get spring during winter, summer is obviously the sweeter time. Enough on the Shelley front. The thought of that poet as an anxious guardian, rushing kid to a morning workshop after talking intimately to the wind the previous evening, is neither inspiring nor pretty. Let’s just talk about ordinary parents, people like you and me.
