Overview

Population & In 2010, Meol’s estimated population was 12,900 this has increased since 2001, while the borough as a whole has seen a reduction. There Housing are slightly more females than males. There are equal proportions of children here than across the borough, lower numbers of working age people and higher numbers of residents aged 65+. Meols has a lower proportion of Registered Social Landlord (RSL) housing (2.4%) along

with lower percentages of vacant properties 1.9% compared to the borough percentage 2.8%. Deprivation & None of the nine Lower Super Output Areas (LSOA) within Meols are within top the most deprived 10% of areas nationally, with relative Child Poverty deprivation level having decreased from 2004. None of the LSOAs are in the worst 10% nationally for deprivation affecting older people. However, levels have increased when compared to 2004. Child poverty is relatively low in the ward with 11.69% of the child population living with living in poverty.

Worklessness The levels of benefits dependency in the ward is lower than across the borough, with 11.4% of working age residents claiming benefits, & Benefits however there has been an increase of the rates year on year (0.4%). Overall British Crime Disorder & Survey (BCS) Crimes and Anti Social Behaviour (ASB) incidents have decreased year on year in Meols. Child Poverty is defined as: Children living in families in receipt of either out of work or tax credits, whose reported income is less than 60 per cent of the median income or in receipt of Income Support or (Income-Based) Job Seekers Allowance, divided by the total number of children in the area (determined by Child Benefit data)

The number of working age people in Meols ward claiming benefits is 870. At 11.4% the number of Meols claimants is lower than the Sefton, regional and national rates (19.4%, 18.2% and 15% respectively). Young people (18 – 24) make up over a fifth of all JSA claimants in Meols.

Figure s for February 2012 show the total rate of claimants in Meols (870) has increased by 2.96% (an actual count reduction of 25) since February 2011, this is slightly above the increase in rates seen in the borough as a whole (1.8%).

Figures released for July 2012 show there are currently150 Job Seekers Allowance claimants (aged 18 to 64) in Meols, a decrease 3.23% (5) on July 2011. The number of 18-24 year old claimants has increased from 40 to 45 and accounts for 30% of claimants. Claimants aged 50+ have decreased from 35 to 25.

Within Meols there are nearly twenty JSA claimants for every Job Centre Plus vacancy (9), this is more than that of Sefton (7 per vacancy) and but over the national rate (5 per vacancy).

The ward has a smoking mortality rate of 165.6 per 100,000 resident and is lower than the Sefton rate of 227.2 (per 100,000), and English rate of 216 (per 100,000).

General Health

According to the Census 2001 general health within Meols is slightly higher than the rest of the borough with 90.31% of residents describing their gener al health as either good or fairly good, with a slightly lower percentage of residents describing their health as not good, 9.69% in Meols compared to 11.25% for the borough as a whole.

According to the Sefton Lifestyle Survey 2010 the percentage of people residing within Meols ward who ‘Self-Declared Health – Good or very good’ was 66.2%, this is lower than the Sefton percentage of 64.4%.

Life Expectancy in Meols for males is above the borough but below the national averages, for females life expectancy is higher than the borough and national averages.

The percentage of Meols residents stating they suffer from long term illnesses is 30.7%, lower than the Sefton levels of 33%.

Similarly the rate of child emergency hospital admission in Meols is below the borough average at 88.1 per 100,000 residents, compared to 112.8 for Sefton.

Levels of below average mental wellbeing is higher in the Meols ward than in Sefton overall with nearly a third (30.8%) of residents affected compared to 29% across the Borough. Also 33.8% of all incapacity claimants within the ward are due to mental health issues, this is much lower than both the borough and national rates (44.7% and 43.8% respectively).

Rates of teenage conceptions within the Meols ward (31.4 conceptions per 1,000 girls aged 15 - 17) are slightly lower when comparing them to the borough rates (32.8) and significantly lower than those nationally (40.3).
