Unbeaten in three starts this term, he arrives as the standard-setter boasting a career-high mark of 176 and he should appreciate this extra yardage judged on his latest performance at Kempton. In a cracking renewal, though, strong cases can also be made for Don Cossack and Don Poli, last season's Ryanair Chase third and RSA Chase winner respectively. The former fell two out in Cue Card's aforementioned King George when still going well but otherwise hasn't put a foot wrong this season, while the latter won the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown on his latest outing and looks made for this track/trip given his style of racing. Smad Place was an incredibly emphatic winner of the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury earlier in the season and impressive again when landing the BetBright Trial Chase here in January. DJAKADAM was absolutely tanking when coming to grief at the tenth fence in that Grade 2, though, and last year's second can follow in similar hoofprints to Dawn Run who unseated her rider in a prep race for the Gold Cup but came back to land the spoils. Representing the in-form Willie Mullins yard, the son of Saint Des Saints may not have to improve a great deal on last year's performance to go one better this time round. Final declarations were made this morning, and all 40 runners stood their ground. We're all set. There is usually a story behind every Grand National winner, behind every Grand National contender, but there could be no better story this year than the one that victory for Shutthefrontdoor and AP McCoy would tell. The champ, riding in his last Grand National, in what would be his last race if he happened to win it. That would be the story of stories. Of course, there are other stories lurking. Like the Pineau De Re story, bidding to become the first back-to-back winner since Red Rum. Or the Lord Windermere or Spring Heeled story, both trying to win for Jim Culloty the trainer, 13 years after Bindaree won for Jim Culloty the rider. Or the First Lieutenant story, Mouse Morris' horse set to be ridden by Nina Carberry. Never before has a female rider won the Grand National. Well, Katie Walsh won the Irish National on Monday, so why not? Here are five things that you might keep in mind as you are searching for the Grand National winner: No seven-year-old has won the National since Bogskar in 1940, and none has finished placed in the race since 1971. That makes it difficult for Cause Of Causes and Unioniste. Bindaree in 2002 is the last eight-year-old to win it, and he was only the third eight-year-old since Red Rum won his first in 1973.

The G1 Championship races that take place at the venue every March are designed to find the best horses in specific divisions of the jump racing game. • The Champion Hurdle run on the Tuesday is designed to find the best 2-mile hurdler. • The Queen Mother Champion Chase is designed to find the best horse over the bigger obstacles at the minimum distance of 2-miles. The race is run on the Wednesday of the Festival • On Thursday Cheltenham Stages the Stayers’ Hurdle designed to find the best staying hurdler over a trip of 3-miles. • Thursday also plays host to the Ryanair Chase – a race which has become a Championship event for chasers specialising in a trip of 2 miles and 5 furlongs. • On the Friday of the Festival, we have the Gold Cup – the staying chasers’ Championship event run over 3 miles and 2 furlongs. These races are difficult to read. All the most talented horses in each division – at least those which are fit – tend to show up. All the major yards are represented. Every single runner is trying. Nothing is being saved for another day. The championship races are invariably run at a red-hot pace. This, in combination with the specific demands of the track, means that only horses at the top of their game, horses tuned to the moment and horses in receipt of luck in running, can prevail on the day.
