India Street Historic District Designation Report General Description of the District The India Street neighborhood as we know it today encompasses a 19-block area, extending west to east from Franklin Arterial to Washington Avenue/Mountfort Street and north to south from Congress Street to Commercial Street. Within this larger neighborhood boundary, the proposed India Street Historic District encompasses portions of 10 blocks and is focused on the major corridors (Congress, India and Middle) that define the historic core of the neighborhood and around which many of the neighborhood’s most significant institutional, commercial, religious and residential structures are concentrated. Within or just outside the district boundaries are located five previously-designated landmark structures or sites. These include the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, St. Paul’s Church and Parish Hall, North School, the Abyssinian Meeting House and Eastern Cemetery. Four additional landmarks are proposed for designation in conjunction with the district designation. These include the former Etz Chaim Synagogue (now Maine Jewish Heritage Museum), the former India Street Fire Station, St. Peter’s Catholic Church, the former Shaarey Tphiloh Synagogue, and See full-sized map of district attached to this report. the Abraham S. These structures are recommended for landmark status based on their significance in the development of the neighborhood, their architectural significance and/or their position at a key gateway into the neighborhood.

LTiS was incorporated in Massachusetts in 1993. Projects have been completed for New Balance, the Denver Performing Arts Complex, New Hampshire DOT, Massachusetts DOT and the City of Boston among many other public and private agencies. Working with the Charles River Conservancy, the River St, Weeks footbridge, Anderson and Western Avenue bridges were illuminated by Mr. Powell between 2001 and 2005. AGAINST THE GRAIN: SUITABILITY AND PRIORITIZATION ANALYSIS FOR CONTRAFLOW BIKE TREATMENTS IN GREATER BOSTON Photo: Payton Chung, Wikimedia Commons Suitability Factors Following guidelines from the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), suitability for potential contraflow streets was determined by performing SQL queries within the MassDOT roads file. Streets had to: • be one-way operation • not have a center median • be Class 5 or 6 (minor roads) • not be a tunnel or ramp • have under 25mph speed limit A ‘potential contraflow streets’ shapefile was created as a result. Maus/Bike Portland Prioritization Factors To determine which of the ample suitable roads should be prioritized 1. for contraflow design, the following Boolean factors were determined and notated using 1s and 0s in new fields within the ‘potential contraflow streets’ shapefile: 1. Is the street adjacent to existing bicycle facilities? Streets which fills gaps and connect existing parts of the bicycle network should be prioritized over streets which would stand alone. Using the Union tool, all municipal bike facilities layers were combined. Then, using Select by Location and Intersect, potential contraflow streets adjacent to the bike network were selected and given a 1. Introduction 2.
