Ubamer, a tribe of the Ari-Banna group Haberland found the area of the Ubamer in the 1950s to cover 20-25 km east-west and 10- 15 km north-south, with the Argenne to the east, the Sido to the south, the Dime to the west, and the Bargedda to the north. Caravan routes used to cross there, and Ubamer town was more populated before the Italian time. The headman of the Ubamer around 1950 was the middle-aged Wolde Amanuel, with two sons who had been educated in Addis Abeba. The elders of the Ubamer opposed Wolde Amanuel for having accustomed himself too much with the Amhara. There were five sub-chieftains for Kosamer, Aidamer, Garagir, Lulamer, and Shama, and altogether 33 clans. [Haberland 1959 p 167-177] text E. The name Sawana granite was given from another locality where this granite was first known. An erosion basin with a relatively large surface is developed south of the Aflata basin. The length of the main Ujima placer, including feeder placers, amounts to 47 km taking into consideration only the area included in the available aerial photographs. Only a small part of this drainage basin, belonging to the Adola series, has been found to be gold- bearing. In the portion of the placer located on gneisses, no gold has been found. Talc lenses occur in the surroundings of serpentinite bodies. The serpentinites of this group have no commercial value as mineral deposits, as the nickel was not found in sulphidic form. A beryl occurrence has been indicated (Tassfaye et al. 1962) about 5 km north of Ula Ulo in the Gudba valley. Pyrite has been found associated with amphibole schists near Ula

Ulo mountain and the Dawa river. Numerous garnierite veins occur in the western slope of Ula Ulo hill and were discovered along a road cut in the slopes. The Ula Ulo zone was drilled in 1963 and 1964, and chemical analysis was carried out in the laboratory of the Ministry of Mines. The tonnage of nickel as known at the end of 1963 was about 3,000,000 tons. There is an enriched ore zone with the highest grade of nickel (4.53%) indicated by the shows of garnierite. Cobalt content is only about 1/100 of the nickel content. Another deposit of the same type is found 2 km to the south of Ula Ulo. of the visitors would get up and draw together, disputing hotly. They would stop in front of our tent, and point, and bend down towards the ground, peering through the dim light, and evidently trying to see something in order to decide a debated point. After a time they would withdraw -- we instructed our interpreter to tell them to depart, for our men needed sleep." "We rose early in the morning, and prepared to leave. While we were loading, a silver jackal kept moving about the camp, or sitting on his haunches quite close to us. The men threw stones and pieces of charred wood at him, but he merely changed his position, refusing to go away. I told them to leave him alone, and thereafter he sat and enjoyed the anticipation of the feast of refuse which would be his when we had gone." "The friendly Danakils were driving their sheeps and goats to water when we forded the river in front of our encampment. HDE.. Urga (Mumicha Urga) 08/38 [x] The Rosen party travelled in this Oromo country and camped at Urga on 24 March 1905. There were streams named Urga in valleys on both sides, but on their map they could see a larger river Urga which they did not find in reality. There was rich vegetation in the valleys. [F Rosen, Eine deutsche .., Leipzig 1907 p 313] HCD87 Urgamo, at 35 km south-west of Dilla 06/38 [x] Site on a hill where a German ethnographic expedition in December 1934 studied decorated monoliths with human faces. Père Azaïs found four sculptures there and named the area Watadera. There were also undecorated medium-size phallus stones. How the monoliths had been grouped was impossible to determine - and a large tree had grown up and pushed apart one group. [Ad. Jensen 1936 p 99] The Germans could find again only two of the four sculptures described by Azaïs. They found that at least one stone had been fairly much demolished, and they thought it was a kind of revenge of the local people after the foreigner Azaïs had ended his measuring and photographing and left.
