DISH Network Adds MTV S to DISH Latino Package LITTLETON, Colo.--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Aug. 25, 1999-- EchoStar's 20-Channel DISH Latino Package Offers the Most Comprehensive Spanish-Language Programming Package in the United States EchoStar Communications Corp. (NASDAQ: DISH, DISHP) is pleased to announce that DISH Network™ will add MTV S to DISH Latino, the most complete Spanish-language television and audio programming package ever offered in the United States. DISH Latino offers Spanish-speaking customers a variety of television and audio programming from Latin America. Already a leading provider of Spanish-language TV programming, DISH Network is proud to be the first satellite television provider to offer the fast-growing U.S. Spanish-speaking audience the most extensive selection of news, sports, movies, music and other entertainment. "For the first time ever in the U.S., Latin music programming takes center stage," Eric Sherman, Director of Operations at MTV S. "An entire generation of U.S.-born Spanish-speaking young people will find the music of their lives and their culture represented only at MTV S. But beware, this isn't their parents' music. MTV S' mix of Latin Pop and Rock en Espanol represents the newest sounds of today." "MTV S is a great addition to DISH Latino by appealing to the interests of the young Hispanic community," said Michael Schwimmer, vice president of Programming at EchoStar. "The U.S. Hispanic population is over 31 million, and growing, yet this community has been largely disregarded by a majority of television providers. DISH Latino offers 20 television channels to millions of Spanish-speaking homes." MTV S targets the unique character and voice of the American Hispanic community.

ABSTRACT Stereotypes of Asians and Asian Americans in the U.S. Media: Appearance, Disappearance, and Assimilation Yueqin Yang, M.A. Mentor: Douglas R. Ferdon, Jr., Ph.D. This thesis commits to highlighting major stereotypes concerning Asians and Asian Americans found in the U.S. media, the “Yellow Peril,” the perpetual foreigner, the model minority, and problematic representations of gender and sexuality. In the U.S. media, Asians and Asian Americans are greatly underrepresented. Acting roles that are granted to them in television series, films, and shows usually consist of stereotyped characters. It is unacceptable to socialize such stereotypes, for the media play a significant role of education and social networking which help people understand themselves and their relation with others. Within the limited pages of the thesis, I devote to exploring such labels as the “Yellow Peril,” perpetual foreigner, the model minority, the emasculated Asian male and the hyper-sexualized Asian female in the U.S. media. In doing so I hope to promote awareness of such typecasts by white dominant culture and society to ethnic minorities in the U.S. Stereotypes of Asians and Asian Americans in the U.S. Media: Appearance, Disappearance, and Assimilation by Yueqin Yang, B.A. A Thesis Approved by the Department of American Studies ___________________________________ Douglas R. Inspired by a desire to give back to teens in need, KarmaThreads Yellow founder, Rhonda Lee, is sharing a portion from all of the items sold to charities that shelter and nurture teens. For Lee, it is an idea that has hung around for years and is now Black coming into fruition. “I really wanted to form a non-profit organization for teens to provide clothes for kids in need,” she said. “I think that it’s our responsibility to help these teens that are the next generation and teach them the responsibility of taking care of their own.” On Friday, Nov. 24 — also known as “Black Friday” — eight businesses in Exeter aided in the launch of Kar- maThreads by displaying the T-shirts in their stores and providing purchase information for those who are inter- ested in giving back.
