Programme funded by EU Implementing partner RECENT SUCCESS Ecological Heating Brings Savings

The biomass heating boilers were installed in the municipal building, kindergarten and the Technical and Economy Schools, with the financial support of 89,665 Euros from the European Union and the Government of Switzerland, through EU PROGRES. Besides these institutions, Prijepolje Museum, which is attached to the heating system in the municipal building, has also benefitted from the project.

All three boiler rooms used coal before intervention, had shabby boilers that caused great energy loss, and had high maintenance costs. Unlike coal, pellet is ecologically clean fuel made from the pressed wood, with 95% utilisation. Pellet heating contributes to decreasing the greenhouse gas emission and improves management of wood waste. The experts estimate that municipal budget will save 20% of funds for heating, which, along with the ecological aspect, contributes to economical management.

The municipality is continuing the work on “Green Economy” by planning to install similar pellet based heating systems in other institutions in the town, starting with the Prijepolje Hospital.
