View this bulletin online at www.DiscoverMass.com PASTOR’S COLUMN Dear Brothers and Sisters, Happy Easter and to those who have been away for a while, welcome back. Easter is always a time of grace and new beginnings. As we celebrate Christ’s triumphant rising from the dead, we see the hope and promise of our own resurrection on the last day when He will come to judge the living and the dead. By virtue of our Baptism, we have entered into the promise of new life. The Lord never reneges on His promises and so today, Easter Sunday, we renew OUR promises to be faithful to Him. Once more we renounce Satan and all his empty promises, and we promise to live in discipleship of the Lord. Our fidelity is to Him and His ways. The Easter Proclamation states: This is the night, that even now, throughout the world, sets Christian believers apart from worldly vices and from the gloom of sin, leading them to grace and joining them to His holy ones. … The sanctifying power of this night dispels wickedness, washes faults away, restores innocence to the fallen, and joy to mourners, drives out hatred, fosters concord, and brings down the mighty. Throughout Lent we prepared for this day – fasting, giving alms, abstaining, practicing the works of mercy – all to prepare for the celebration and reception of the grace poured out at the Resurrection. As we continue in this time of pandemic, we see new life sprouting all around us. As of the writing of this column, 3.44M (11.52% of the population) Texans have been fully vaccinated while a total of 10.1M doses have been administered. As people are being fully vaccinated, I’m seeing more and more people returning to Mass. What a great sign of new life – an assembly that is growing daily. Even our daily Mass attendance is growing. Praise God! I know the pain and hurt that many have experienced over this past year. No Eucharist, no hospital visits, not being able to anoint the sick and the dying, formation classes minimalized and even the daily ritual of temperature checks and hand sanitizing has been bothersome to some. But, as we come out of the darkness with the bright hope of the vaccine, smiles are returning (albeit under masks – but as a 5-year-old told me, “It’s all in the eyes, Father.”) and people are enjoying gathering in the assembly to celebrate receiving Holy Communion. We have experienced what the lack of the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of our Lord Jesus causes us – gloom, depression, a sense of loneliness, etc. And with the returning of many people, we have been told that due to the Governor’s Executive Order of opening businesses to 100%, we can now seat people in every pew provided that we “checkerboard” the people in the pews. In other words, no one may sit directly in front of you or directly behind you. The seating then forms a sort of checkerboard. We did this for our Confirmation students on March 19th and it worked very well. But we have to remain disciplined in that manner of seating. If your family will overlap to the point that some of your family would be directly in front of an already seated group, the family will have to find another place to sit. The awareness of who is in front of you and who is behind you becomes important. This change may cause some to feel uneasy, but our hospitality team will assist you if you ask them. Our nave is very large, and we’ve included more seating with the chairs around the perimeter. We want you to feel safe and be safe, so, please, if you need assistance in finding the right place to sit, ask a member of the hospitality team. They are ready and willing to serve. You have also seen the implementation of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion again. Every minister follows the safety procedures that the priests and deacons have been doing since the reopening of the churches last May. The Cardinal has also permitted bringing Holy Communion to our shut-ins once more. The ministers will have to be retrained and follow all procures that include the wearing of masks and hand sanitizing before entering the home and upon leaving the home. Fr. Justin will continue to work on this as he is our “point person” for the pastoral care of the sick in the home, hospitals, and nursing homes. Please contact Mary Blanton in for more information regarding this. New life continues in other ways around us. We have three big Eagle Scout projects going on in the parish right now. You may have already seen the new gaga ball court in the corner of the open field in front of the Gonzaga Center. I’m sure that it will have a lot of use from our youth and young adults. Another project is a green house to help conserve many of our sanctuary plants. Rather than setting them outside or giving them away at the end of a season, the green house will preserve them until they are ready to make their return to the sanctuary. Another major project is the re-establishment of our parish library. This is something we have had on the front burner and then the back burner since our return post Harvey. Shelves are being built and arranged and the salvaged books prepared for their return for your usage. I am very grateful to these Eagle Scout candidates for wanting to improve our campus and parish life. By the way, our scout troop has one of the highest percentages of Eagle Scouts. Congratulations to them and their leaders for such leadership. Prayers for a joyous Easter Season,

The first eight days of the Easter Season make up the octave of Easter and are celebrated as Solemnities of the Lord. (GNLY #24)

Octave—the eighth day—refers to the eight days following Easter Sunday which we hold as a time of rejoicing following weeks of preparation and anticipation. The eighth day was given the name Divine Mercy Sunday by Pope John Paul II, as a reminder that just as the risen Lord offers the gift of his reconciling love to us, so are we called to act daily with a spirit of mercy toward one another with Join in prayer prayers, words and deeds. for the Lord’s extraordinary grace and mercy! The celebration of Easter is prolonged throughout the Easter season. View this bulletin online at www.
