Thursday 18th Feburary 2010 Working well We would like to say, right from the start, that we are very impressed with the way each and every student at our school has begun their academic year. Both Upper and Lower Division have been working very hard in class and are conducting themselves in a studious and conscientious manner. The playground has also been a pleasant place to be, with all students playing together happily and being helpful to each other. Well done to you all! Helping Hands Thank you to those people who, at very short notice, made their way over to Public School on Saturday to help us transport some new resources for our school. Each of the small schools in Young were invited to share the resources that were left at the now closed Bendick Murrell Public School. Because of this opportunity we now have a shiny new piano for our Performance Room, as well as a range of sport, art and craft, music, mathematics and English resources. P&C News Last night was the first P&C meeting for 2010 and was well attended. You will receive minutes from the meeting in due course, but in the meantime we welcome the new executive members for 2010: President - Kellie Grant, Vice President - Robyn Yates, Secretary - Sylvia Edwards, Treasurer - Gina Galvin, Uniform Co-ordinator - Raylene Taylor and Canteen Co-ordinator - Michelle Robertson. Congratulations to everyone and thank you to all who supported our first meeting of the year, we had 13 people attend and 4 apologises. A great effort! Our first function of the year is the Moto Bike Trials on the 6&7 March, which we need to provide catering for. You would have received notes home about this, so please fill them out and return them asap. It will be a very busy year with the 150th celebrations in October and we want everything to be perfect, so please lend a helping hand when asked. There will be a working bee very soon to erect the double garage, just waiting on a date when the builders are free. We’ll let you know! Happy Birthday! Christopher, our gorgeous pre-schooler, had his 4th birthday today whilst here at school. Christopher was very excited to share his special day with all of his new friends and his mum Julie made an unbelievable cake, with real cars on the top! Thanks for sharing your special day (and cake!) with us. Swimming Carnivals What fabulous weather we have had for both the Young Small Schools Swimming Carnival and the Young PSSA District Carnival! It was certainly more pleasurable than the freezing cold day in 2009. Murringo Public School had a tremendous day at the Small Schools Carnival, with 100% attendance - which is our aim for all sports carnivals this year. Jack and Maxine had been whisked away on an exciting surprise family holiday, so we will excuse them for not being there. Parents, grandparents and friends turned up in great numbers and the ’red army’ of Murringo fans made quite an impression on the day. Every student participated in the races and we were thrilled to see so many of our Upper Division students in the 50m races. Many of them didn’t think that they would be able to swim that far, but I think a few surprised themselves with their ability. Last year we had 1 swimmer in the 50m races and entered no relay teams. This year we had 10 50m swimmers and entered a team in all relays. What a fabulous effort! Our across the pool swimmers were fabulous too and competed in freestyle, breastroke, backstroke and kickboard events as well as the fountain pool activities for Lower Division. Congratulations to you all. We can’t forget the parents who entered in the Parent/Teacher relay. We had 6 competitors ready to go but only 4 were allowed in the pool. Their style was impeccable and their speed wonderful - they won the relay!!! Well done! Some of our fabulous results included: Murringo 1st in the Parent Relay, 2nd in the Girls Medley Relay And 3rd in the PP5 Relay Lochie Mclean 2nd in the 50m 13yrs Freestyle Isabelle Duff 1st in the 15m Breastroke Shannon Robertson 2nd in the 50m Junior Backstroke and 3rd in the 50m 9yrs Freestyle Justin Taylor 1st in the 50m 13 yrs Freestyle Molly Craggs-Unwin 2nd in the 50m Junior Butterfly and 3rd in the 50m Junior Backstroke Claire Yates 1st in the 50m Senior Backstroke and 3rd in the 50m 12yrs Freestyle Jack Grant 2nd in the 50m Junior Backstroke, 2nd in the 50m Junior Butterfly and 3rd in the 50m Junior Breastroke Charlie Mclean 3rd in the 50m Junior Backstroke, 3rd in the 50m Junior Butterfly and 3rd in the 50m 10yrs Freestyle Seven students from our school were chosen to represent the Young Small Schools at the District Carnival. They were - Lochie Mclean, Justin Taylor, Claire Yates, Shannon Robertson, Molly Craggs-Unwin, Charlie Mclean and Jack Grant. Unfortunately Lochie and Charlie couldn’t make it but should be proud to have been selected. Congratulations to all of the students who swam on the day. They were impeccably behaved, showed an impressive team spirit and had some fine results. Thank you as well to the parents who attended this second carnival. Congratulations to Justin who came first in the 13 years boys freestyle, to Claire and Shannon who both came 3rd in their backstroke events. On the following page you will find some more photos from the carnivals as well as some information reports written by Upper Division students about the Small Schools Swimming Carnival.

Swimming Carnival Information Reports

On Tuesday the ninth of February we went to a swimming carnival. It started at nine o’clock and ended at one o’clock . To get in it cost 4 dollars.

There were 42 races that we went in . It was at the Young Pool and , Maimuru, Wombat and Monteagle were also there. It was sunny and the new pool looked good. The water was clean as glass but the fountain pool was cold as snow. There were lots of parents there and it was nice to have the Young High School kids there. I had a great day!!!!! Yesterday , the ninth of February, we had a swimming carnival at the Young Pool. It cost $4.00 per parent and $2.20 per child. The service at the pool canteen was great and the water was as clear as a blue sky. It was a beautiful day. It was very nice to see everyone from our school there except Jack and Maxine who were on a surprise holiday. The strokes I did were the 50m butterfly, 50m breastroke and 50m backstroke and 15m freestyle. The schools that were in it were Monteagle, Maimuru, Wombat and Bribbaree.
