FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Italian Cultural Institute of New York Presents: CARLO PETRINI, SLOW FOOD AND THE UNIVERSITY OF GASTRONOMIC STUDIES An encounter with American students an "Slowness" believers Tuesday, May 15, 2012- 4.30 - 6.00pm Location Italian Cultural Institute New York, 686 Park Avenue NYC New York, May 11, 2012- The Italian Cultural Institute will host an encounter between Carlo Petrini - founder of Slow Food and the University of Gastronomic Studies - and American students and "Slowness" believers. Carlo Petrini will meet the students and the ex-students of the University of Gastronomic Studies to illustrate new projects and his University. As of today, Slow Food has over 100,000 members joined in 1,300 convivia - local chapters - worldwide, as well as a network of 2,000 food communities who practice small-scale and sustainable production of quality foods. Organized by volunteer leaders, local chapters carry out the Slow Food mission in their communities. Chapters offer educational events and activities to promote sustainability and biodiversity and connect farmers, cooks, educators, students and everyone else who cares about their food and the environment; local chapters are the heart of Slow Food movement. In the USA there are more than 200 chapters across the country that invite members and the greater community to taste, celebrate and champion the food and the food traditions important to their region. From the Slow Food Manifesto: "Speed became our shackles. We fell prey to the same virus: 'the fast life' that fractures our customs and assails us even in our own homes, forcing us to ingest fast- food.
Transformative Social Innovation: SLOW FOOD MOVEMENT A summary of the case study report on the Slow Food Movement This project has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement no 613169 About TRANSIT: TRANSIT is an international research project that aims to develop a theory of Transformative Social Innovation that is useful to both research and practice. It is co- funded by the European Commission and runs for four years, from 2014 until 2017. The TRANSIT consortium consists of 12 partners across Europe and Latin America. Since the early 1990s, many critics have claimed that the dominance of malbouffe (bad food) has resulted in numerous negative consequences. The Slow Food movement emerged as an answer to the public’s growing concern and desire to address this problem. Today a sizable number of people across the globe are embracing the Slow Food movement with the same fervor typically seen in adherents of a conventional religion. Its many ardent devotees choose a way of life that is substantially different from that of the mainstream, reciting the mantra “Good, Clean and Fair.” Among their strongest-held principles is the belief that the Slow Food ethos presents a viable path to liberation of mind, body, and spirit.

Laudatio Carlo Petrini Louise O. Fresco, chair of the jury of the Johannes van Dam Prize The Jury has decided to award the 2014 Johannes van Dam Prize to Carlo Petrini, the man who has singlehandedly and fundamentally changed our thinking about food and society. In reaction to the opening of a fast food hamburger outlet next to the Spanish Steps on the Piazza di Spagna, the iconic site in the center of Rome, he coined the term SLOW FOOD, in contrast to FAST food. And the rest, as you know, is history. From 1986 onwards Carlo Petrini has contributed numerous articles on food and taste and has created a worldwide network of those who want to explore the roots of food. In 2001 Carlo published his book groundbreaking book Slow Food of which a translation is re-published today. The Slow Food movement now exists in over 50 countries with publications in many languages about traditional, local recipes and products. In the last ten years, the Terra Madre conferences have drawn thousands of farmers, cooks and consumers. Moreover, Carlo Petrini also created the University of Gastronomic Sciences in the North of Italy. The term SLOW has now permeated nearly every realm of our society: we have slow cooking, slow cities, slow travel and tourism, and even slow working. It has become the symbolic term to counter the speed of the hasty, media driven crowded world of today. Even if it is difficult to define SLOW exactly, the intention is clear: to live, eat and work in a meaningful and mindful way with attention to details, to the here and now.

The culinary discourse, in all its facets, gains increasing centrality in cultures. Institutions, media, and common people are obsessed with what they eat. In Italy, a country already aware of itself with regards to food, gastronomy turns into the main concern, the most debated and cared of system of norms. Social phenomena like Slow Food and Zero Kilometer originate in Italy and then conquer the world, claiming that improving the quality of food is the way for a better planet. But what is the deep cultural meaning of this massive trend? What lies behind the culinary reason? Aesthetic neutralization of socioeconomic conflicts, chauvinistic marketing of stereo- types, and anti-intellectual subversion of sensorial hierarchies, the article contends.
