Back in 2015 it would have been easy to say that about Nob Hill High. He was 9 years old, struggling to hit the board. Nob Hill High had a pretty decent record although he eclipsed $1 million in earnings the hard way, finishing first- second-third in 51 percent of his 236 starts, most of them overnights for trainer Bruce Saunders, who campaigned the horse on the East Coast for Ohio owners Don Robinson and Bob Mondillo, who both work in the financial industry in Columbus, Ohio. During his 2012-13-14 racing seasons, Nob Hill High started 41 times in two years and 45 times another year, banking about half of his career earnings during those campaigns. When it was time for Nob Hill High to be retired, Robinson and Mondillo knew they would take care of the horse, who was a sentimental favorite. They had bred him, purchasing his dam, the great racehorse Anniecrombie, for $7,500 from the Castleton Farm dispersal and breeding her to McArdle. But was Nob Hill High’s breeding and racing resume strong enough that they should be exploring a stud career? “He’s one of a few horses that has a million-dollar winning father (McArdle) and a million-dollar winning mother (An- niecrombie),” noted Robinson. “We wanted to bring him to Ohio and race some babies out of him, but some farms we talked to told us he wouldn’t be commercially viable,” shared Robinson. “Then Scott Hagemeyer said he’d stand him at stud.” “We didn’t go crazy and breed all of our mares to him, but Hagemeyer provided a home for Nob Hill High, but attract- we have supported him with some good mares,” said ing mares was difficult.
