Delbert Tibbs was a seminary drop out, radical and poet. Accused of a rape and murder in , he was arrested in Mississippi, tried in Florida, and sentenced to death.

Sunny Jacobs was originally from California, but found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time when she and her common law husband Jesse were accused of murdering two policemen in Florida.

Jesse Tefaro was Sunny Jacobs' common-law husband. They were arrested together for the same crime and both sentenced to die.

Robert Hayes was a former horse groomer, accused of murdering a white woman who worked at the track. He was arrested and sentenced to death.

Georgia Hayes was Robert's wife. They met and married after Robert was released from prison.

Gary Gauger was a farmer in northern Illinois who was accused of the death of his parents, who were found in their motorcycle repair shop with their throats cut. Gary's case went all the way to the Illinois Supreme court before he was released.

Sue Gauger was Gary's wife. Through her we begin to see the toll on the families of the wrongly accused.

Kerry Cook was arrested for the murder of a young woman in Smith County, . He was imprisoned for 22 years for a crime he did not commit. Mr. Cook is still embroiled in a legal battle with Smith County for complete exoneration.

Sandra Cook is Kerry's wife. They met after his release from prison, when, as a volunteer, she helped him re-acclimate to society.

David Keaton was accused of killing a policeman during a store robbery, convicted and sentenced to death. He was only 19 at the time of the crime.

PRODUCTION NOTES

Over the course of the summer of 2000, Jessica Blank and Eric Jensen traveled the listening to people's stories of what it was like to be wrongly convicted and on death row. Although these people were vastly different from one another, what they had in common was that they all had been sentenced to die and spent anywhere from 2-22 years on death row. The playwrights interviewed 60 people, some by phone, some in person - six of those interviews form the core of The Exonerated.

This play has been culled from not only the taped interviews but also research involving court transcripts, police records, witness statements, case files, letters and news articles. With a few exceptions, each word spoken in this play comes from the public records mentioned above. The names of the exonerated people are their own; some of the auxiliary characters have been changed for legal reasons.

(Paraphrased from the Introduction to the play - from Jessica Blank and Eric Jensen.) DEDICATION: •

At the request of Kerry Max Cook, this production and its performances are dedicated to the memory of Delbert Tibbs who passed away in his Chicago home, November 23, 2013, at the age of 74.
