WORKSHOP: Around The World In 30 Instruments Educator’s Guide www.4shillingsshort.com [email protected] AROUND THE WORLD IN 30 INSTRUMENTS A MULTI-CULTURAL EDUCATIONAL CONCERT for ALL AGES Four Shillings Short are the husband-wife duo of Aodh Og O’Tuama, from Cork, Ireland and Christy Martin, from San Diego, California. We have been touring in the United States and Ireland since 1997. We are multi-instrumentalists and vocalists who play a variety of musical styles on over 30 instruments from around the World. Around the World in 30 Instruments is a multi-cultural educational concert presenting Traditional music from Ireland, Scotland, England, Medieval & Renaissance Europe, the Americas and India on a variety of musical instruments including hammered & mountain dulcimer, mandolin, mandola, bouzouki, Medieval and Renaissance woodwinds, recorders, tinwhistles, banjo, North Indian Sitar, Medieval Psaltery, the Andean Charango, Irish Bodhran, African Doumbek, Spoons and vocals. Our program lasts 1 to 2 hours and is tailored to fit the audience and specific music educational curriculum where appropriate. We have performed for libraries, schools & museums all around the country and have presented in individual classrooms, full school assemblies, auditoriums and community rooms as well as smaller more intimate settings. During the program we introduce each instrument, talk about its history, introduce musical concepts and follow with a demonstration in the form of a song or an instrumental piece. Our main objective is to create an opportunity to expand people’s understanding of music through direct expe- rience of traditional folk and world music. This is what a lot of mandolin players are using all the time and it's easy! Closed Position means using no open strings. Basic Double Stop Series: (AB-I) Double stops are one of the mandolin's signature sounds. In this class, we will learn a basic double stop series that moves up and down the neck for both major and minor chords. Freeing Up the Right Hand (B-I) This class is geared towards folks who have learned a number of fiddle tunes and have gotten pretty comfortable playing those melodies but are wondering how to speed them up a bit or breathe a little more life into them now. It is also for folks who might have been playing for a while but still struggle with speed and flow in performance of their tunes. Backing Up a Singer: (I-A) Using double stops and licks to create back up that allows the lead vocal to remain front and center while enhancing the story of the song. -

Common and Noteworthy Instruments from 1750s-1800s’ Eastern USA Emory Jacobs Faculty Sponsor: Dr. Scott Marosek Department of Music During the 1700s and 1800s, residents of the eastern seaboard of North America enjoyed a wide variety of instruments, many of them built for “contrast and variety.”1 Availability, on the other hand, was a different story. While few accounts of the musical scene in that time period exist for more rural settings, records of the area and the events of the period from 1750 through the 1800s paint an interesting picture of how specific social classes and needs determined an instrument’s popularity. At the time, instruments were highly controversial, especially among specific religious groups.2 The religious restrictions on music occurred in relatively isolated sub- cultures in America, whereas notable sources from Germany would spend a novel’s worth of pages praising how perfect the organ was and would carefully list the detail of instruments’ tuning, mechanisms, and origins.3 When comparing these European instrument lists or collections with confirmed colonial instruments, one finds that very few of the elaborate, most prized instruments were exported to North America. Even outside America’s religious institutions, instruments were sometimes considered profane.4 While some instruments and some musical styles escaped such stigma, other instruments and styles had more ominous ties or were considered inelegant; the violin and fiddle offer one illustration.5 The phenomenon suggests that American society’s acceptance of music may have been a sensitive or subtle affair, as the difference between the violin and fiddle is often described as the fiddle being a poorly crafted violin or, in some cases, as a different musical style performed on the violin. -

Indeed, its delicate sound was more suitable in the inner chambers of courts and the quiet gardens of bourgeois villas than in the uproarious battle fields and the busy streets of towns. KEYWORDS Lute, Trecento, Italy, Bas instrument, Giullari any studies on the origin of the lute begin with ancient Mesopota- mian, Egyptian, Greek, or Roman musical instruments that carry a fingerboard (either long or short) over which various numbers M 2 of strings stretch. The Arabic ud, first widely introduced into Europe by the Moors during their conquest of Spain in the eighth century, has been suggest- ed to be the direct ancestor of the lute. If this is the case, not much is known about when, where, and how the European lute evolved from the ud. The presence of Arabs in the Iberian Peninsula and their cultivation of musical instruments during the middle ages suggest that a variety of instruments were made by Arab craftsmen in Spain. -

ACET Junior Academies’ Scheme of Work for music Year 5 Unit 1.1: A Musical Masque About this unit: This unit of work is linked to the History scheme of work HT 1.1 Post 1066 Study: The Tudors. It is a starting point for exploration into Tudor music. In it children will begin to learn about Tudor Dance music, in particular the Pavan as a popular Tudor dance. Children will identify its characteristic musical features and rhythms before attempting to dance the Pavan and performing their own Pavan melody over a drone accompaniment. Children will then move on to learn about traditional Tudor musical instruments before exploring Tudor songs and madrigal-style songs with a ‘fa, la, la, la’ refrain. Where they will compose their own lyrics to a madrigal melody. Fanfares are explored briefly before children work towards putting on a Tudor style banquet/concert combining elements of all the musical learning in to a class performance. Unit structure National Curriculum objectives: This unit is structured around six sequential music enquiries: 1. What is a Pavan? Links to previous and future National Curriculum 2. Tablature for Lute, Cittern, and Bandora
1 ------------------------------------------------------------ Decoding Tablature Using Conversion Charts: ------------------------------------------------------------ Lute Tabs: Renaissance lute tabs came in a bewildering array, and practically each separate practitioner used a different system. They mostly amounted to three variants, all called "French" or "Italian". (The German system is really different, I won't go into it here, and the Spanish is really more of a precursor to the French and Italian.) Terminology Definitions as I use them: Tuning: The notes to which you tune the open strings of your lute. French open tuning=G −1 ,C 0 ,F 0 ,A 0 ,D 1 ,G 1 Italian open tuning=A −1 ,D 0 ,G 0 ,B 0 ,E 1 ,A 1 (Low to High strings.) Italian tuning would effectively just transpose the piece of music up one whole step. This matters when playing with others, otherwise, not so much. Instruments usually were tuned to themselves. Tab: High strings represented by top lines (French) or bottom lines (Italian) in tablature. Method: Numbers (Italian) or Letters (French). Any given writer could (and did) choose French or Italian for any of the three items above, declare that he was right, and the rest of the world was wrong, and prove it by using his variant. Thus, decisions of 2 possibilities for three items, 2 to the power three is eight possible charts. (See charts file. Eight charts for lute. I only did two for the cittern and one for bandora, but they, too, have 8 possible charts each.) An example of French tuning, tab, and method may be found in "Fond Wanton Youths", by Robert Jones, the "Nevv Booke of Tabliture," by William Barley, or Dowland's "First Book of Ayres." In the below charts: the top row is the letter on the staff lines in the tablature. -

Note the four strings clearly detailed by the artist. Other parts are sketchy, such as bridge, tail piece and finger board. There appears to be a hint of a finger board but these details are again, sketchy. The nut is suggested in sketchy form like the fingerboard. Elevation of the bridge and other setup details are not determinable. The form of the body and the sound holes are clear in this picture. The same picture, full view. It is important to get the best picture one can find of the original or wrong conclusions can be make – this picture looks to have only three strings, yet the more detailed reproduction of the same manuscript – from another source – clearly shows more detail including four strings and a hint of a finger board. Page 1 Southern English, "Tiberius" Psalter, c.1050 ("Musician from King David's suite" in British Museum, London, Cotton MS.Tib.C.VI, fol. 30v). Other period icons of similar instruments are worth examining before starting the final work on the above recreation of the English (Canterbury), Passionale of Augustine c.1100 fyddle French, Gradual of Nevers c.1060 ("Musician dancing, with legend Consonancia cuncta musica" from Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, MS. lat.9449 The artist has shown us a line hinting at a finger board. Later instruments have longer fingerboards of two shades – the half closer to the nut being dark and the other half, closer to the bridge, being light and colored as the instrument. -
