“God’s Treasured Possession!” The – Old Israel and New Israel = The Church Date: 6-25-17 Study: #32 Text: Chapter 34 Theme: “There has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like , whom the Lord knew face to face”

(1) Then Moses went up from the plains of to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite . And the Lord showed him all the land, Gilead as far as Dan, (2) all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the western sea, (3) the Negeb, and the Plain, that is, the Valley of Jericho the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar. (4) And the Lord said to him, "This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, 'I will give it to your offspring.' I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there." (5) So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord, (6) and he buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth-peor; but no one knows the place of his burial to this day. (7) Moses was 120 years old when he died. His eye was undimmed, and his vigor unabated. (8) And the people of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. Then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended. (9) And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. So the people of Israel obeyed him and did as the Lord had commanded Moses. (10) And there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, (11) none like him for all the signs and the wonders that the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land, (12) and for all the mighty power and all the great deeds of terror that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.

B. Study Notes: 1. The Lord told him in (Dt. 32:48-52) to climb Mt. Nebo. Moses was buried there (Jude 1:9). This a very strange account about Moses’ body and burial.

2. The land of , the , had been promised to the patriarchs: (Gen 12:1; 15:18; Ex 33:1)

3. “Servant of the Lord” was a title used for those who served the Lord, the Great King, in his royal administration. The term is used for Abraham (Gen 26:24); Moses (Ex 14:31); Joshua (Josh 24:29); David (2 Sam 7:5); the prophets (2 Ki 9:7); Israel (Is 41:8; 42:1-4).

4. 120 years old adds up to 3 generations X 40 years. He was blessed with stamina and vigor his whole life,

5. Grieving for 30 days – weeping and mourning for this great man of God.

6. “There has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face” (Ex 3:1 – 4:17; Dt. 18:15; 31:26; Nu 12:8; Heb 3:1-6) Then Jesus came, God’s own Son, the greater than Moses: (Matt 17:1-9; Mark 9:1-9; Luke 9:28-36; 16:29-31; 24:27,44; John 1:17; 3:4; 5:46; Acts 3:22; 2 Cor 3:12-16; Rev 15:3)

7. Now Joshua will carry out the conquest of the land so Israel would possess it. He was filled with the spirit of wisdom. Jesus Christ = Yeshua = Joshua, he is the new Joshua. (Acts 6:6; Heb 4:1-11)

8. The 5 Books of Moses: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy are called the and the Pentateuch. Consider all the knowledge we have about: creation, the fall of man into sin, the flood, the table of nations, the tower of babel, the setting aside of Israel to bring forth the Messiah and the whole history of the 12 tribes and the ancient pagan nations. Note: If Moses spoke to the Lord God Almighty face to face, we must listen to him and not the constantly changing and twisted theories of mere men throughout history!

LUTHER’S WORKS (Vol. 9, pp. 310–311). “MOSES did not write this chapter, but Joshua or Eleazar, unless you want to say that his death, as if foreseen, was described by him himself in this way. That his grave is not found by man (v. 6) is properly said to have been done to keep the Jews from making an idol of him. But more than this, it means that when the light of the Gospel came, the ministry of the Law was removed so that the Jews can neither find nor ever restore it… Finally, Moses is praised for his greatness (vv. 10 ff.). After him no one equaled the great signs done in Egypt and in the desert through him. Especially did he stand out, however, because the Lord knew him face to face; that is, he lived and talked familiarly with God. This is not said for all time, but for as long as Moses’ ministry lasted. For all his successors taught what Moses taught and were taught by him and from him, as the lesser ones. At the same time it remains true, as is said in chapter 18:18, that after Moses Another was to be raised up like Moses, namely, Christ; to Him the great Moses yielded, as to One far greater in worth and power, as we saw there. It also signifies this, that nothing greater can be taught and transmitted, so far as laws are concerned, than the Law of Moses. For all things reach their climax in him, except that the great Law was to give way to the even greater Gospel.” C.
