Savior Supreme The Iconic Christ Colossians 1:15-16 For many people in our world God is an abstract being, the unknown almighty. Hollywood has attempted to portray Him as the force in Star Wars, or the architect in the Matrix. They have used nice versions of humanity (from George Burns to Morgan Freeman) to portray him. Many will insist that if there is a God, He cannot be known apart from our own constructs of Him. 1. Jesus is the _____________________ of the invisible God A. Everything was created __________________ Jesus If this text is true… We should ________________ in the law of God We should be __________________ about discipleship We should ________________ Jesus first To put anything above Christ as a goal for our spiritual journey misses the point of everything the Bible reveals to us about God. God is not in love with some future version of us. He doesn’t put us in time out until we come to our senses before inviting us to be involved with Him. Jesus, the Creator and Sustainer of the universe invites all who trust in Him through faith and repentance to come and begin enjoying Him now. Reflection What do you think the purpose of the gospel is? How does religion play into the gospel and how can it detract from the gospel? How does the gospel provide balance between being solid doctrinally in our understanding of Christ while still helping us with our felt needs? Think about areas of life where it is easy to acknowledge the supremacy of Christ. Consider those areas of life where you have yet to acknowledge Christ as supreme. .

Smoking and Tobacco Control Monograph No. 9 Preface The recent increase in cigar consumption began in 1993 and was dismissed by many in public health as a passing fad that would quickly dissipate. Recently released data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) suggests that the upward trend in cigar use might not be as temporary as some had predicted. The USDA now projects a total of slightly more than 5 billion cigars were consumed last year (1997) in the United States. Sales of large cigars, which comprise about two-thirds of the total U.S. cigar market, increased 18 percent between 1996 and 1997. Consumption of premium cigars (mostly imported and hand-made) increased even more, an astounding 90 percent last year and an estimated 250 percent since 1993. In contrast, during this same time period, cigarette consumption declined 2 percent. This dramatic change in tobacco use raises a number of public health questions: Who is using cigars? What are the health risks? Are premium cigars less hazardous than regular cigars? What are the risks if you don't inhale the smoke? What are the health implications of being around a cigar smoker? In order to address these questions, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) undertook a complete review of what is known about cigar smoking and is making this information available to the American public. This monograph, number 9 in a series initiated by NCI in 1991, is the work of over 50 scientists both within and outside the Federal Government. Thirty experts participated in the multi-stage peer review process (see acknowledgments).

Lambchops By Ron Hutchinson “Who the hell wants to hear actors talk?” --- Harry Warner, 1927 In 1925, when the brothers Warner decided to part- ner with Bell Laboratories to use the Vitaphone disk system to present movies with synchronized sound, talking wasn’t part of the plan. The brothers envi- sioned marketing their features with full orchestral scores and limited sound effects. Actors that talked from the screen were an afterthought. But a quick one. When they premiered “Don Juan” in 1926, it boasted a synchronized symphonic score with sound effects that enhanced the John Barrymore swashbuckler. There was no dialog in this otherwise silent film. The sound was on 16-inch shellac disks, turning at 33 1/3 rpm and synched to the picture. As long as the film didn’t break or the needle didn’t skip, everything matched. Audiences applauded, but were more impressed with the short subjects which preceded the feature. These WERE talking pictures, with opera stars, a ukulele player and Will Hays of the Motion Picture Producers Association actually speaking and singing in perfect synchronicity. STORY OF THE MORRIS FROM WRECKING BALL TO NEVERENDING ENCORE When the most modern theatre in the country opened in 1922, it was here in South Bend. A staggering million dollars was spent to build it. And, it was anything but a simple box with a stage. This place, known as The Palace when it opened, was designed from the ground up to make every theatergoer feel like royalty. The eclectic mix of architectural styles made a Louis Armstrong, 1953 statement that the Arts are for everyone. And this community embraced the sentiment in a big way. Vaudeville acts played every ten minutes to packed crowds. Silent films were accompanied by music from the orchestra pit below. And Hollywood royalty like Will Rogers, George Burns and Gracie Allen, a young Frank Sinatra, Debbie Reynolds and others flocked to the stage. Frank Sinatra, 1947 Today, if you’re here between shows, you can hear the echoes of local children and adults who filled this happy place time- after-time for symphonies, plays and world premieres like Knute Rockne All-American. The buzz was electric. So, it’s hard to believe that something like television could put a dent in the magic of this place. But it did. By 1959, The Palace was scheduled to be torn down. That’s when a local Arts enthusiast saved a century of memories for generations to come by purchasing the theatre and then giving it to the City of South Bend. Her name was Ella M. Morris. And she understood the original sentiment of the theatre.
