Thin Clients and PCs – A comparative study to find suitability for different computing environments Tanmay K. Mohapatra Choosing between thin clients and PCs requires a rational evaluation. Often a correct mix is optimum. The personal computer (PC) no doubt has created a revolution in the field of computing. In recent years, thin client computing has provided an attractive alternative to the ubiquitous PC. However, both personal computers and thin clients have their own place in business organizations. A large number of studies have been carried out to examine the technical aspects of various thin client technologies. But very few have proposed a set of holistic guidelines to be followed while making a choice of thin client technologies. In this article I examine the strengths and weaknesses of the PC and various types of thin clients that are available today, the technologies they use and their performance under different environments. Finally, I will propose a few guidelines for determining suitability of each for different computing environments. A BRIEF HISTORY With the advent of the PC the centralized computing model of mainframes and time- shared computing gave way to a more distributed model. Personal computers allowed users to use their local workstations to install applications, store data locally and also to do some amount of processing locally. Devices like floppy drives, scanners and printers could be attached directly to the desktop for alternate data input and output. The lower cost (than mainframes), popularity and ease of use of the PC played a major part in its proliferation. The large user base and its open architecture encouraged a large variety of software packages and devices to be developed for it. -

Introduction Regarding increasing popularity of the LiveCD distributions1 of a Linux system we compile the essential knowledge of how the LiveCD works (based on many rather scattered documents [1-8]) to facilitate preparation of the specialized distributions of systems based on this idea. We describe one of the most efficient ways of system architecture managing using UnionFS. All steps of the procedure were tested using laptops which have often more exotic hardware than desktopUMCS computers. The possibility of booting a PC from a CD/DVD ROM has raised several possibilities, including the most important one, namely, the possibility of running the required system or programs independently of the actual operational system, configuration, and resources of the PC. The self-configuring CD/DVD ROMs can be also useful for administrative purposes and as the rescue disks. The LiveCD distributions allow for cheap and effective use of the PCs as the special servers, routers and other active elements over the network. This idea of the LiveCD systems is based on the possibility opened by the El Torito extension to the standard ISO 9660 system and the Linux kernel capabilities. -

Ort, Datum Unterschrift Kurzfassung In dieser Diplomarbeit werden die Ansätze Thin und Rich Client näher betrachtet sowie deren Vor- und Nachteile gegenübergestellt. Es wird ebenfalls bei beiden Ansätzen zwischen Hard- und Software un- terschieden, da die Begriffe für beides verwendet werden. Dazu wird ein Beispielbetrieb analysiert. Ein Thin Client – von der Hardwareseite aus betrachtet – ist ein etwa modemgroßer Rechner mit CPU, RAM und Grafikkarte. Allerdings be- sitzt er keine lokalen Speichermedien wie z. B. Festplatten. Der Unter- schied zu einem klassischen Terminal liegt darin, dass der Thin Client selbst einen Browser und/oder eine Javaumgebung ausführt. Innerhalb dieser werden Thin Client Applikationen lokal ausgeführt. Der Browser kann zum Beispiel auf einem internen Flashspeicher oder auf einem Chip (etwa vergleichbar mit dem BIOS) gespeichert werden. Der Gedanke hinter einer Thin Client-Applikation ist der, dass alle Da- ten vom Server bezogen und sämtliche Verarbeitung von Benutzerein- gaben sowie Berechnungen der Geschäftslogik vom Server durchge- führt werden.
