Hush was born in Somerville sometime in the mid-1840s. He was an African American soldier who served in the 32nd Regiment of the U.S. Colored Troops throughout 1864 and 1865 in the Civil War. Hush was mustered into military service in 1864 and volunteered to serve three years. He was discharged honorably in 1865 because the war had ended. Hush was involved in the Battle of Honey Hill, also known as the third battle of Sherman’s March to the Sea, or the Savannah Campaign, which helped to disrupt the economy of the Confederacy when troops destroyed infrastructure and industry throughout the region. Additionally, in his personal life, Hush was married to Sarah Catherine Roberts, with whom he had eight children. -

I. Issa Dept. of English & Translation, Jadara University, PO box 733, Irbid, Jordan Abstract This study is devoted to discuss the renditions of the prophets' names in the Holy Quran due to the authority of the religious text where they reappear, the significance of the figures who carry them, the fact that they exist in many languages, and the fact that the Holy Quran addresses all mankind. The data are drawn from two translations of the Holy Quran by Ali (1964), and Al-Hilali and Khan (1993). It examines the renditions of the twenty five prophets' names with reference to translation strategies in this respect, showing that Ali confused the conveyance of six names whereas Al-Hilali and Khan confused the conveyance of four names. Discussion has been raised thereupon to present the correct rendition according to English dictionaries and encyclopedias in addition to versions of the Bible which add a historical perspective to the study. Introduction In Prophets’ names comprise a significant part of people's names which in turn constitutes a main subdivision of proper nouns which include in addition to people's names the names of countries, places, months, days, holidays etc. In terms of translation, many translators opt for transliterating proper names thinking that transliteration is a straightforward process depending on an idea deeply rooted in many people's minds that proper nouns are never translated or that the translation of proper names is as Vermes (2003:17) states "a simple automatic process of transference from one language to another." However, in the real world the issue is different viz. -

JBL 130, no. 3 (2011): 417–430 Aaron and the Golden Calf in the Rhetoric of the Pentateuch james w. watts [email protected] Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY 13244-1170 In the Pentateuch, the contrast between legal or instructional material, on the one hand, and stories, on the other, is nowhere more stark than in the relationship between the story of the golden calf (Exodus 32–34) and the instructions and nar- ratives (Exodus 25–31; 35–40) that surround it. The story tells of ritual failure with disastrous consequences, while the ritual instructions and narratives around it recount fulfilling those divine instructions to the letter. The contrast becomes most excruciating in each section’s characterization of the high priest: the golden calf story seems to vilify Aaron by placing him at the center of the idolatrous event, while the ritual texts celebrate Aaron and his sons as divinely consecrated priests. -

Page numbers have been added.] Terrorism : Al-Sahab Releases New Abu Yahya Al-Libi Speech on Occasion of Id al-Fitr 2008 On 28 October, a forum participant posted to a jihadist website a statement issued by the Al-Sahab Media Production Organization, the media arm of the Al-Qa'ida Organization, entitled "New: Al- Sahab Presents: The Id al-Fitr Speech for 1429 by the Eminent Shaykh Abu Yahya al-Libi." The statement contained the banner advertising Al-Libi's most recent speech and numerous links to the video file. The Al-Sahab video itself is 44 minutes and 41 seconds long and in it, Al-Libi offers encouragement and incitement for all mujahidin to remain steadfast and not veer off the "path of righteousness." He urges them to continue on the path of jihad but does not refer to specific individuals except for the Egyptian president, whom he strongly rebukes for not coming to the aid of the Palestinians. Toward the end, he prays for the downfall of all those who fight against Islam, specifically the US, the coalition allies, and US President Bush, and calls upon God to humiliate him and destroy him. A translation of the speech follows: "'All that they said was: 'Our Lord! Forgive us our sins and anything We may have done that transgressed our duty: Establish our feet firmly, and help us against those that resist Faith" (Koranic verse; Al-Imran 3:147). -

Pregill Elon University, Elon, NC [email protected] In memory of Thomas Sizgorich ABSTR A CT The quranic retelling of the Golden Calf story found at 2:51–54 contains a unique allusion to what is arguably one of the most important elements in the biblical precursor in Exodus, the so-called Levitical election. This paper will explore the interpretation of Moses’ puzzling command to the Israelite idolaters to “slay yourselves” in early and classical tafsīr. I will argue that the subtle changes in Muslim exegetes’ understanding of this aspect of the episode reflect important developments in early Islamic soci- ety, in particular the emergence of the accommodationist political ideol- ogy that would become one of the defining features of classical Sunnism. He says: Imam Ja'far ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq “For We assuredly sent amongst every People a Messenger, (with the command): ‘Serve God, and eschew Evil;’ of the people were [as] some whom God guided, and some on whom Error became inevitably (established). So travel through the earth, and see what was the Ibid. p. 200, no. 4 end of those who denied (the Truth)” (Quran 16:36) This is because one of the principles by which God operates is that He will never take a people to task unless He has made clear to them what His expectations are. Bowing to people as a gesture of respect, honor, love, fear is allowed: -Abraham bowed to his guests: And he lifted his eyes and saw, and behold, three men were standing beside him, and he saw and he ran toward them from the entrance of the tent, and he prostrated himself to the ground.
