  • Immda Advisory Statement on Guidelines for Fluid Replacement During Marathon Running
IMMDA ADVISORY STATEMENT ON GUIDELINES FOR FLUID REPLACEMENT DURING MARATHON RUNNING Written by Tim Noakes MBChB, MD, FACSM Professor of Exercise and Sports Science at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. This statement was unanimously approved at the IMMDA General Assembly, Fall 2001. This paper was editorially prepared for publication by an IMMDA committee of Drs. David Martin Ph.D.(Chair) ; Lewis G. Maharam, M.D., FACSM; Pedro Pujol, M.D., FACSM; Steve Van Camp, M.D.,FACSM; and Jan Thorsall, M.D. Publication: New Studies in Athletics: The IAAF Technical Quarterly. 17:1; 15-24, 2002. SUMMARY During endurance exercise about 75% of the energy produced from metabolism is in the form of heat, which cannot accumulate. The remaining 25% of energy available can be used for movement. As running pace increases, the rate of heat production increases. Also, the larger one’s body mass, the greater the heat production at a particular pace. Sweat evaporation provides the primary cooling mechanism for the body, and for this reason athletes are encouraged to drink fluids to ensure continued fluid availability for both evaporation and circulatory flow to the tissues. Elite level runners could be in danger of heat illness if they race too quickly in hot/humid conditions, and may collapse at the end of their event. Most marathon races, however, are scheduled at cooler times of the year or day, so that heat loss to the environment is adequate. Typically however, this post-race collapse is due simply to postural hypotension from decreased skeletal muscle massage of the venous return circulation to the heart upon stopping.

As participant-based extreme sports events, such as motorsports, are becoming increasingly popular, competitive and dynamic, it is essential for event organisers to understand the demographics and consumer behaviour of visitors to such events.

Rotary Club of Hout Bay Bay Breezes http://rotaryhoutbay.org/ issue number:172 Date:10 Sept 2017 Meeting time: Tuesdays 6.30pm for 7.00pm President : Joelle Searle 083 790 1991 Location: Atlantic Boat Club, Hout Bay Harbour tel: 021 790 2930 [next to and Secretary: Alison Rice 083 633 5694 above the LookOut Deck Restaurant] District 9350 office: 021 686 4499 Attendance officer: Monique Norman cell: / 072 261 8203 [email protected] LAST TUESDAY We had a non-speaker evening which didn’t make it any the less interesting in fact. Our numbers were small as so often occurs in Winter but we got stuck into discussion regarding the October Rotary Family Health Day, the prospect or possibility of registering for meeting attendance online at Club Runner and the Dragon Boat Race. RFHD is to take place again at the Sentinel Ministry Church. We didn’t hold a RFHD last year but it is all hands on deck this year and with the assistance once more of Am Kap Rotarians. The event takes place over 3rd, 4th and 5th October and is really is a case of all available RCHB Rotarians pitching in. This doesn’t mean three full days of duty for all. A roster will be set up but please put your name down for as much time and days as possible. This is an amazingly successful event and RCHB has always shown its colours, achieving recognition from District and RI. All of the testing of key health elements makes such a difference. Blood pressure, Diabetic, HIV and eyesight to name just some.

However, he initially made a name for himself in 2010 when, just two months after his 20th birthday, he became the youngest athlete to break 2:06 in the marathon with a 2:05:23 performance in Rotterdam. He has run well in Chicago, finishing third in 2010 and coming back in 2012 to chase Tsegaye Kebede (ETH) to the line for second place and a new personal best, 2:04:52.
