USC IS THE PLACE TO BE

Based on several national accolades it has received recently, USC can stake its claim as one of the nation’s premier schools. USC was named the “College of the Year” by the 2000 edition of the Time/Princeton Review College Guide because of the remarkable bonds it has forged with the local community. The editors said USC has one of the most ambitious social-outreach programs of any university in the nation and cited the school’s model of service learning (applying academic theory to real-life situations through public service). They also pointed out that USC’s undergraduate applications have nearly doubled over the last few years and it is enrolling the most academically accomplished freshman classes in its history. Troy also was selected as one of America’s nine “hottest schools” by the 2001 edition of the Newsweek/Kaplan College Guide because it lives up to its reputation as a top-notch institution of higher education. Students quoted in the guide said that what attracted them to the university was Los Angeles’ ethnic diversity, the offer of scholarships, the small classroom sizes and USC’s standing in academe. Also in 2001, the Association of American Colleges and Universities picked USC as one of 16 “Leadership Institutions” for providing stimulating educational experiences both inside and outside of the classroom. USC was cited for emphasizing a campus culture featuring new learning techniques, curriculum and organizational structure and for demonstrating a strong commitment to liberal arts education relevant to the contemporary world. The organization said USC not only linked liberal arts and pre-professional study, but offered students the opportunity to learn by doing through off-campus work in community projects and internships. Also, USC was lauded for stressing critical thinking, effective communication and contributing to a diverse society. 2006 USC MEN’S VOLLEYBALL SEASON OUTLOOK

USC’s SETTERS ANNUAL USC WON-LOSS RECORD AND THE 5-1 SYSTEM Year Overall League Finish Head Coach USC was one of the earliest proponents of the 5-1 offense in 1970 1-6 0-4 6th John Smith 1971 2-9 1-4 5th Dick Montgomery college volleyball. Much of the Trojans’ success over the years — 1972 3-7 1-5 6th Dick Montgomery four NCAA crowns, six runners-up placings and a third-place finish 1973 9-5 8-3 3rd Dick Montgomery — can be attributed to the 5-1 offense. 1974 19-4 11-2 2nd Ernie Hix The 5-1, which features only one setter handling the entire 1975 10-8 8-4 2nd (tie) Ernie Hix offensive scheme, has long been recognized internationally as the 1976 11-13 1-11 7th Ernie Hix premier offensive system. With the success of the U.S. men’s 1977 * 18-1 13-1 1st Ernie Hix National Team, which uses the system, all of today’s college teams 1978 14-7 9-5 3rd (tie) Ernie Hix have gravitated to the 5-1. 1979 ** 23-5 16-2 2nd Ernie Hix USC began with the system in the early 1970s with Carlos 1980 * 22-6 14-4 2nd Ernie Hix Fonseca at setter (1973-74-75). Although three players shared the 1981 ** 21-5 16-1 1st Ernie Hix setting position in 1976 (Gary Fisette, Brent Peterson and Alan 1982 *** 22-10 11-5 3rd Bob Yoder Rosehill), the Trojans have had only nine setters since then: Dusty 1983 14-13 6-10 7th Bob Yoder Dvorak (1977-78-79-80), Bill Stetson (1981-82), Rudy Dvorak 1984 29-13 12-6 3rd Bob Yoder (1983-84-85-86), Mike Lauterman (1987-88), Dan Greenbaum 1985 ** 28-9 15-3 2nd Bob Yoder (1989-90-91), Ty Price and Aaron Boone in 1992, Price and Steve 1986 ** 27-2 20-0 1st Bob Yoder 1987 ** 29-11 14-4 3rd Bob Yoder Loeswick in 1993, Loeswick in 1994-95-96, Donald Suxho in 1997- 1988 * 34-4 16-2 1st Bob Yoder # 2000, Miles McGann in 2001, and McGann and J.T. Gilmour in 1989 28-11 13-7 4th (tie) Bob Yoder 2002. 1990 * 26-7 12-4 2nd (tie) Jim McLaughlin The accomplishments of these setters are a testament to the 1991 ** 34-2 16-0 1st Jim McLaughlin efficiency and effectiveness of the system as employed by USC. 1992 11-13 9-7 3rd Jim McLaughlin During Dusty Dvorak’s tenure, the Trojans won two national 1993 18-12 11-8 3rd (tie) Jim McLaughlin championships (1977-80). Under the guidance of coach Ernie Hix, 1994 23-8 14-5 2nd Jim McLaughlin and with the talent and creativity of Dvorak, much of the playset 1995 16-17 8-11 4th Jim McLaughlin offense and quick transition attack was developed. The USC 1996 14-16 9-10 5th Jim McLaughlin system combined the quickness of the Japanese and the playset 1997 18-14 9-10 4th (tie) Pat Powers options and back-row attack of the Polish teams (both were 1998 17-17 7-12 4th Pat Powers Olympic gold medal winners). The USA National Team adopted the 1999 24-12 11-8 2nd (tie) Pat Powers system when Dvorak moved there. As the setter, Dvorak led the 2000 26-6 16-3 1st (tie) Pat Powers U.S. to international dominance and an eventual gold medal in the 2001 15-11 10-7 3rd (tie) Pat Powers 1984 Olympics. He is still recognized as perhaps the best setter 2002 6-22 3-19 11th Pat Powers 2003 6-25 2-20 11th Turhan Douglas ever produced in the U.S. 2004 6-23 4-18 11th (tie) Turhan Douglas Bill Stetson set the Trojans to the NCAA Final Four in 1981- 2005 7-23 3-19 11th Turhan Douglas 82. And Stetson was the starting (.626) (.589) setter for this country’s most successful club team, Molten America, guiding his squad to several national championships. Rudy Dvorak, * NCAA Champions ** NCAA Runners-up *** NCAA Third Place an All-American in 1986, brought USC back to collegiate volleyball # National Coach of Year prominence with two NCAA runners-up finishes in 1985-86. He has since trained with the U.S. National Team, and played internationally FORMER USC HEAD COACHES in Italy and professionally on the beach. Mike Lauterman, a walk- on surprise, set USC in the 1987 and 1988 NCAA Finals, guiding Troy to its third NCAA title (1988) when he was named to the NCAA All-Tournament team. Dan Greenbaum took over the setting reins in 1989 and helped the Trojans win the 1990 NCAA crown. He was an All- American for the 1991 NCAA runners-up and then was with the U.S. National Team. First-time Trojan Ty Price handled most of the setting duties in 1992, while first-year freshman Steve Loeswick took over for Price in mid-1993 and continued on solely in 1994, 1995 and 1996. Donald Suxho of Albania started at setter for 4 Dick Montgomery Ernie Hix years (1997-2000), earning National Player of the Year honors in 1971-73 1974-81 2000. He was succeeded in 2001 and 2003 by Miles McGann (McGann and J.T. Gilmour handled the duty in 2002). Gilmour (along with Gio Altamura at times) was the 2004 setter. Freshman Jimmy Killian took over in 2005 (Gilmour filled in at times). SCORING SYSTEM/LIBERO The MPSF went to the international fast-scoring system in 2001. All games are point per serve, with the first four games played to 30 points and the fifth game played to 15 points. A team must win a game by a minimum of 2 points. Also, like in international play, the MPSF uses the libero position (enacted in 2000), a combination defensive/passing specialist who has free Bob Yoder Jim McLaughlin Pat Powers substitution, and the league plays let serves. 1982-89 1990-96 1997-2002

USC’S 1949 AND 1950 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS

In 1949 and 1950, USC fielded a men's volleyball team (although not under the athletic department's jurisdiction)...and those squads won the first two USVBA Collegiate National Championships ever held. In the 1949 event in Los Angeles, the Trojans defeated Stanford in the final, 15- 4, 15-2. Then, in 1950, Troy beat the University of Mexico for the title in Knoxville, Tenn., 13-9, 14-8. Hans Vogel coached USC to both crowns. USC's Dick Archer and Ray Solari were named All-American first teamers in 1949 and Robbie Duron and Don Patterson were so honored in 1950. Jen-Kai Liu Celso Kalache The team disbanded in 1951.
