USC IS THE PLACE TO BE Based on several national accolades it has received recently, USC can stake its claim as one of the nation’s premier schools. USC was named the “College of the Year” by the 2000 edition of the Time/Princeton Review College Guide because of the remarkable bonds it has forged with the local community. The editors said USC has one of the most ambitious social-outreach programs of any university in the nation and cited the school’s model of service learning (applying academic theory to real-life situations through public service). They also pointed out that USC’s undergraduate applications have nearly doubled over the last few years and it is enrolling the most academically accomplished freshman classes in its history. Troy also was selected as one of America’s nine “hottest schools” by the 2001 edition of the Newsweek/Kaplan College Guide because it lives up to its reputation as a top-notch institution of higher education. Students quoted in the guide said that what attracted them to the university was Los Angeles’ ethnic diversity, the offer of scholarships, the small classroom sizes and USC’s standing in academe. Also in 2001, the Association of American Colleges and Universities picked USC as one of 16 “Leadership Institutions” for providing stimulating educational experiences both inside and outside of the classroom. USC was cited for emphasizing a campus culture featuring new learning techniques, curriculum and organizational structure and for demonstrating a strong commitment to liberal arts education relevant to the contemporary world. The organization said USC not only linked liberal arts and pre-professional study, but offered students the opportunity to learn by doing through off-campus work in community projects and internships. Also, USC was lauded for stressing critical thinking, effective communication and contributing to a diverse society. 2006 USC MEN’S VOLLEYBALL SEASON OUTLOOK There’s no sugarcoating it. Volleyball NATIONAL COLLEGIATE MEN’S 2009 Championship Highlights Career performance leads Anteaters to volleyball crown: UC Irvine’s Ryan Ammerman made his last match his most memorable one by turning in a career performance to lead the Anteaters to a five-set victory over Southern California in the National Collegiate Men’s Volleyball Championship match May 9 in Provo, Utah. Ammerman, the Anteaters’ setter, registered a career-high 13 total blocks, tied a career high with six kills and recorded 55 assists to help UC Irvine rally for a 26-30, 30-23, 26-30, 30-17, 15-12 victory. It is the program’s second national title in the last three seasons. As proficient as Ammerman was, the tournament’s most outstanding player wasn’t interested in hearing about his individual statistics. “I just wanted to win and that’s it,” said Ammerman, whose team went 27-5 this season. The Anteaters, who were swept by Southern California in the semifinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament nine days before the NCAA finale, had a season-high 20.5 blocks to gain a measure of revenge against the Trojans (21-11). Southern California entered the final as a long shot, having gained a spot in the four-team national bracket by upsetting No. 4 Stanford, the top-ranked Anteaters and second-ranked Pepperdine in the MPSF tourney. The postseason run came after the Trojans lost four of their previous six regular-season matches. “The clock struck midnight on us,” said Trojans coach Bill Ferguson, whose team beat defending national champion Penn State in the NCAA semifinals.

  • 2004 Ncaa Championship Recap
2004 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP BYU's Fourth Win over 49ers Has Title Ring BYU's top-ranked men's volleyball team captured its third National Collegiate Men's Volleyball Championship since 1999 with a 3-2 victory over Long Beach State May 8 at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu. It was the Cougars' second crown in the past four years. It was a hard-fought victory for BYU, which won the match, 15-30, 30-18, 20-30, 32-30, 19-17. Jonathan Alleman's four kills in the fifth game helped put the Cougars over the top. "On the stat sheet they outplayed us," said BYU head coach Tom Peterson. "But, the bottom line is, it just seemed like we had the heart whenever we needed it. The team absolutely did it all at the end, just like they've done all year." Peterson made NCAA history by becoming the first men's coach to win a national championship with two different teams. He previously led Penn State to the title in 1994. BYU ended its season at 29-4, while Long Beach State posted a 28-7 campaign, with four of the losses to the Cougars. Long Beach State quickly cruised to a 30-15 win in game one, but the Cougars gained the momentum in game two. The match swung back toward Long Beach State's favor in game three as the 49ers broke an 11-11 tie and ended the game on a 19-9 run. BYU then extended the match by winning a fourth game that included 13 ties but only two lead changes.
