The Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association (IWCOA) The Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association (IWCOA) President’s Greeting Illinois Wrestling Community, It is my honor as the current President of the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association to welcome you all to the 2015 Hall of Fame and All State Banquets. All of the individuals and teams being recognized at this weekend’s ceremonies embody all of the very best our great sport has to offer. The IWCOA has taken great pride in recognizing the accomplishments of wrestlers, coaches, officials, and contributors since 1971. These accomplishments do not occur by chance. They are the result of dedication, commitment, and extraordinary effort on the part of the award winners; none of which would be possible for them without the support of the families, friends, and fans who stand behind them in their journey toward success. The IWCOA and I thank you for this as well as for your attendance this weekend. We hope that you enjoy the event. Yours in Wrestling, Rich Montgomery, IWCOA President IWCOA Presidents 1971 – Steve Combs, Coach, Deerfield 1994 – Joe Pedersen, Official, Naperville 1972 – Steve Combs, Coach Deerfield 1995 – Joe Pedersen, Official, Naperville 1973 – Wayne Miller, Coach, DeKalb 1996 – Dan Cliffe, Coach, DeKalb 1974 – Dennis Hastert, Coach, Yorkville 1997 – Gary Thacher, Coach, Belvidere 1975 – Dennis Hastert, Coach, Yorkville 1998 – Gary Baum, Coach, Kaneland 1976 – Jim Schultz, Coach, Glenbard South 1999 – Gary Baum, Coach, Kaneland 1977 – George Dyche, Coach, West Aurora 2000 – Dan Fulscher, Official, Lincoln 1978 – Charles Anderson, Coach, Savanna 2001 – Dan Fulscher, Official, Lincoln 1979 – Charles Farina, Coach, East Leyden 2002 – Mike Manahan, Coach, Stanford 1980 – Tony Parks, Coach, Addison Trail 2003 – Mike Manahan, Coach, Stanford 1981 – Mark King, Coach, LaGrange 2004 – Mike Wilkey, Official, Oak Park 1982 – Steve Weiss, Coach, Fenton 2005 – Mike Wilkey, Official, Oak Park 1983 – Rick Mann, Coach, Hersey 2006 – Joe Cliffe, Coach, Prairie Central 1984 – Jim Cartwright, Coach, Conant 2007 – Joe Cliffe, Coach, Prairie Central 1985 – Bernie Botheroyd, Coach, Glenbard W. 2008 – Mike Bukovsky, Coach, Montini 1986 – Jerry Ancona, Coach, Lake Park 2009 – Mike Bukovsky, Coach, Montini 1987 – Tom Heniff, Official, Oak Lawn 2010 – Rob Ledin, Coach, Mahomet-Seymour 1988 – Tom Heniff, Official, Oak Lawn 2011 – Rob Ledin, Coach, Mahomet-Seymour 1989 – Mark Gervais, Coach, Marist 2012 – Mike Matozzi, Coach, Hinsdale South 1990 – Dan Cliffe, Coach, DeKalb 2013 – Mike Matozzi, Coach, Hinsdale South 1991 – Dan Cliffe, Coach, DeKalb 2014 – Rich Montgomery, Coach, Rock Falls 1992 – Augie Genovesi, Coach, Notre Dame 2015 – Rich Montgomery, Coach, Rock Falls 1993 – Augie Genovesi, Coach, Notre Dame IWCOA BOARD OF DIRECTORS Rich Montgomery - • Notre Dame Baseball Gameday Notes – Vs. Minnesota (March 4, 2006; Minneapolis, Minn.)
Notre Dame Baseball Gameday Notes – vs. Minnesota (March 4, 2006; Minneapolis, Minn.) Today’s Game – Notre Dame (2-3) looks to get back on the winning track while taking on the host Minnesota team that has started 0-4 (the Gophers lost to Arizona, 7-2, on Friday night) … junior RHP Jeff Samardzija will make the start for the Irish while Minnesota will counter with junior RHP Cole DeVries … ND now is 3-7 all-time at the Metrodome tournaments (also 0-3 in 1991, 2-1 in 2000, 1-2 in 2003). The Series – ND holds a 23-18 series edge vs. Minnesota, with Saturday’s game marking the third meeting between the teams in the past four seasons … Minnesota beat ND at the 2003 DQ Classic (8-2) but the Irish returned the favor in a big way early in the next season, beating the Gophers 19-7 at the FAU Classic. Old Regional Rivals – Notre Dame and Minnesota were the Midwest’s baseball powers in the 1950s … the Irish lost a three-game NCAA series at Minnesota in 1956 (4-3, 5-15, 1-10), with the Gophers going on to win the national title … ND then advanced to the College World Series the following season (1957) … the teams then met in four other NCAA tournaments: 1958 (11-7 ND win, at Western Michigan), 1959 (12-4 ND win, at home), 1960 (15-6 home win for the Gophers) and 1970 (6-2 ND win, at Ohio State). The Last Meeting (ND 19, Minnesota 7; at 2004 FAU Classic) – Notre Dame’s 19-hit explosion was paced by strong days from catcher Sean Gaston (5-for-6, 3 RBI, 3 R) and 3B Matt Macri (4-for-6, 6 RBI, 5 R, HR, 3B) … Dan Kapala picked up the win in relief (3 IP, 3 H, R, 4 Ks) … Minnesota opened the scoring with two runs in the 4th but ND answered with four runs of its own (sparked by Macri’s two-run blast) … the Gophers came right back with four runs in the top of the 5th before the Irish tied the game moments later and then erupted for seven in the 6th, including an RBI double from Gaston … Tim Theis took the loss (0.2 IP, H, 3 R, BB), in relief of Matt Loberg.

LINE DRIVES THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 45, No. 1, Jan. 24, 2006) The President’s Message By NCBWA President Todd Lamb NCBWA Membership: The prognosticators have made their preseason picks. The preseason polls have been announced. The preseason All- America teams are out. A majority of the preseason watch lists have been distributed. Every team has high expectations and goals for the season. Now it is time to play ball. Obviously, the calendar has changed since the last NCBWA newsletter, but now it is finally time to wish followers of college baseball a Happy New Year! It seems a little soon to be writing that – at least from Columbus, Ohio – but this weekend opens the 2006 college baseball season. Granted, not many schools will be taking to the field, but there are a few; all before Ohio State, and many other schools around the country, begins practice. The Buckeyes take to the indoor practice turf of the Woody Hayes Athletics Center Monday. Kudos to the NCAA. The organization’s board of directors approved a uniform start date for college baseball beginning with the 2008 season. The legislation stipulates the season start the Friday that falls 13 weeks before the selection of the NCAA tournament field, which the last few years has been Memorial Day. That means this season would not begin until Friday, Feb. 24. Coincidentally, that is the same day Ohio State opens its season against Wake Forest in a tournament at the University of Florida. In 2008, opening day for all of college baseball will be Feb.

  • 2007 Duke Baseball
DukeDuke BaseballBaseball FacilitiesFacilities Picturesque Jack Coombs Field (right) is located in the heart of Duke’s athletic complex. Named after Duke’s most illus- trious baseball coach, who compiled a 381-171-3 record from 1929-52, Jack Coombs Field is surrounded, sheltered and enclosed by trees and hills. The stadium features a natural grass surface and a tree-lined scenic view beyond the outfield fence with a seating capacity for 2,000 fans. Dimensions of the spacious field are 330 feet down each foul line, 375 feet in the power alleys and 400 feet to center field. The Blue Devils have an enclosed, all-weather hitting and pitching facility (left) along the third base line of Jack Coombs Field. Built in 2001, the facility features six batting cages and astro-turf. The Duke baseball team remodeled its locker room (right) prior to the start of the 2007 season.
