2001 Championship

Highlights

Win for the West: Host Kent State set out to give the 2001 Division I Field Hockey championship a Midwestern feel, and Michigan finished the job with a 2-0 win over Maryland Nov. 18 for its first title. The championship final had never been played farther east than Winston- Salem, North Carolina, before. Now, the title will remain in the Midwest for the first time since Iowa won it in 1986. Two-time national champion Maryland was down 1-0 at the half after Adrienne Hortillosa scored off a corner with 2:13 remaining in the period. The Wolverines managed a second goal on their only shot on goal in the second half. Junior Jessica Rose took an assist from Kristi Gannon to extend the lead with 29:30 remaining in the game. It was defense that had helped Michigan advance to the championship, holding opponents to an average of six shots per game on the season, and it was the difference in the title tilt, too. Behind the senior goalkeeper Maureen Tasch, the Wolverines staved off 20 shots on goal by the Terrapins during the game, including 11 in the second half. Defense helped Michigan to its first national title in any women’s All-Tournament Team: Tasch was joined on the all-tournament team by sport. The Wolverines rejected 20 shots on goal in the title game to teammates Hortillosa, Gannon, Stephanie Johnson and April Fronzoni. beat Maryland, 2-0. Maryland’s , Autumn Welsch, Colleen Barbieri and Caroline Walter were honored, along with and Heather Aughinbaugh of Wake Forest.

Field Hockey DIVISION II

2001 Championship

Highlights

New Championship State: Two streaks in Division II field hockey came to an end November 4 when host Bentley downed East Stroudsburg, 4-2, in the Division II Field Hockey Championship game. It ended a long stretch of champions from the state of Pennsylvania, and it ended a shorter skein of frustration for Bentley, which had been a bridesmaid two years running. Since the Division II tournament resumed in 1992, the title has been in the possession of Lock Haven or Bloomsburg, two Pennsylvania powerhouses. The Falcons jumped ahead early when junior Carolyn Bolster set up Kristyn Bates 8:46 into the game. Liz McKenna extended the lead to two goals with 13:02 left in the first half. Before East Stroudsburg could score in the second period, Lauren Galenski extended Bentley's lead to 3-0 with her 10th goal of the season.

All-Tournament Team: The national championship team placed Bates, Alicia Cabrera, Diana DeMain and Allyson Bunce on the all-tournament team. Also honored were Kelly Wagner, Shannon McCracken and Rachel Miller of East Stroudsburg; Angela Potts and Kari Surace of St. Michael’s; and Erika Grap and Jen Denault of Lock Haven. Bentley’s Allyson Bunce earned all-tournament honors for the champions.

Highlights

It Only Takes One: Freshman Ashley Ostrander's goal at 16:41 of the first half was enough to claim Cortland State’s third national championship with a win over Messiah, 1-0, at Springfield Nov. 12. Ostrander scored the game-winner off a rebound of her own shot. Messiah freshman goalkeeper Erica Nelson saved the initial attempt, but the Red Dragon collected the rebound near the right side of the cage and knocked in the winning goal. The Red Dragons (19-2) have made four trips to the national championship match—all since 1993. Cortland State is now tied for second place all-time with William Smith with three national titles. For more, go to www.ncaa.org/news/2001/20011119/div3/ 3824n21.html on the World Wide Web.

All-Tournament Team: The national champions placed Julie Gentner, FIELD HOCKEY Erin Ryder, Bonnie Kenna and Becky Gillette on the all-tournament team, while Messiah’s Danae Chambers, Allison Harris and Michele Sandowich were honored. Also on the team were Taryn Howard and Stephanie Walters from Skidmore and College of New Jersey’s Kerri Hunt and

Megan McCall. Photo by Jay Clendenin/NCAA Photos Jamie Tull (left) and Cortland State pushed past Messiah to win the Division III national title, 1-0.
