The Venue James Taliaferro Sports Complex - Salem Civic Center

Built in the mid-sixties and opened in September 1967, the Salem Civic Center stands as Virginia's oldest public assembly building of its type. The building was constructed for a cost of $1.5 million and was dedicated by Virginia Governor Miles Godwin. From its inception to 1983, the Civic Center operated as a joint venture between the City of Salem and the County of Roanoke. It was run by a five-man Civic Center Commission appointed by the two governing bodies of the city and county. In 1983, the City of Salem absorbed the building into the city fold and made it a working department under the Salem umbrella. The arena recently went through substantial renovations including a new playing surface, locker room improvements, new score boards, backboards and shot clocks. Today, the Civic Center hosts over 600,000 visitors a year, not including spectators who attend events at the Taliaferro Sports and Entertainment Complex that includes the Civic Center, Salem Football Stadium and Memorial Baseball Stadium. The building hosts Virginia's largest horse show, the second largest fair in the state as well as concerts, sporting events, and professional trade shows. A full-time staff of 16 people handles the day-to-day operations of the building and can call on over 80 part-time employees to in various event operations. This weekend's NCAA Men's Division III Basketball Championship marks the 16th national hoop championship handed out on the Civic Center floor. Last year's DIII Basketball championship game brought over 2,835 people into the facility. In addition to the National Championship, the Civic Center hosts the annual Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's and women's basketball tournaments and various high school state and local championships each year.

Cabrini won a school-record 25 games overall and spent four weeks in the D3Hoops.com Top 25. Cabrini's first win of the season, a 79-47 decision on the road against Drew University, went into the books as the 100th in Kahn's coaching career.

In his first year, Kahn led the Cavaliers to 22 overall victories, then the program's highest win total since the 1995-96 campaign. Cabrini returned to championship game of the CSAC Tournament for the first time in seven years.

Prior to joining the Cavaliers, Kahn spent six seasons as the head coach at the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg. With the Bobcats, Kahn became the program's all-time leader in career victories (77), recruited two Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Newcomers of the Year (2005-06, 2007- 08) and guided UPG to its first postseason appearance since the 1999-2000 season. Kahn mentored Pitt-Greensburg to two AMCC championship games (2005-07) and claimed the conference's regular season crown in 2004-05, the first in program history.

Kahn's coaching career began as an assistant in 1997-98 with NAIA Division II Grand View College in Des Moines, Iowa. He then became an assistant at Wesley College in Dover, Del. (1998-2000). During the 2000-01 season, Kahn served as an assistant coach at Albright College in Reading, Pa. Kahn spent a season as the top assistant at Division II Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, W. Va. in 2001-02. With the Rams, Kahn served as the academic, recruiting and scouting/film exchange coordinator. In addition to his duties as head men's basketball coach at Cabrini, Kahn also serves as an assistant to the athletic director, supervising home events, coordinating all travel operations for the College's 18 varsity sports and monitoring the department's equipment room.

Kahn earned a bachelor of arts degree in education from the University of Redlands in 1997 and a master's degree in education from Wesley in 2000. He has been a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) since 1999. PROBABLE STARTERS...

HEAD COACH RON ROSE --- 106-61 in 6 years at IWU Ron Rose, who played on two conference championship teams and three NCAA Division III tournament teams during his career at Illinois Wesleyan University, became the 14th men's basketball coach at his alma mater on May 12, 2006.

After five seasons (prior to 2011-12) Rose has a career record of 83-54 (.606) and a CCIW record of 37-33 (.529). At Illinois Wesleyan Rose has coached one Division III All-American (Zach Freeman in 2007) and 10 all-conference players (three in 2010- 11). Prior to the 2011-12 campaign Rose ranks No. 6 in IWU men's basketball coaching history with 83 victories.

Rose led the 2010-11 team to a 20-9 record and its second straight NCAA Division III tournament appearance, winning a game over Wisconsin-River Falls before losing to St. Thomas, who became the national champion. It was the second straight year IWU was defeated by the national champion in the NCAA tourney, losing in 2010 to Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

In the past two seasons (2009-11), Illinois Wesleyan has been 23-3 at the Shirk Center, losing the three games by a total of 16 points. IWU was 11-1 in 2010- 11 and 12-2 in 2009-10.

Prior to returning to IWU, the 41-year-old Rose was head basketball coach at Bloomington High School for five seasons (2001-06), where his teams were 103-38 with two Big 12 Conference titles, four straight Intercity tournament championships and regional and sectional championships in 2006. The Raiders' sectional title was the first at the school in 31 years and in 2004-05, BHS won the Pontiac Holiday Tournament for the first time in school history. In nine total seasons as a high school head coach (four at Normal Community), Rose amassed a cumulative record of 154-93 for a .623 winning percentage.

A four-year letterman at IWU, Rose played on Bridges-coached teams that went a combined 66-33 and was a starting guard in 68 career games, averaging 5.9 points and amassing 356 assists, a total that still ranks No. 6 all-time at IWU. His 137 assists in 1987-88 is seventh best in a Titan single season.

After graduating from Illinois Wesleyan in 1988 with a degree in business administration and mathematics, Rose worked as an actuarial assistant at Bloomington's State Farm Insurance before returning to school at Olivet Nazarene University, where he earned a master's degree in teaching in 1992 and served two seasons as a basketball assistant for Ralph Hodge. Rose was an assistant basketball coach under Scott Thompson at Wichita State University from 1992-94 Rose returned to the Twin Cities to coach and teach at Normal Community High School, where his teams were 51-55 in four seasons.

Rose and his wife, Tina, have four children - Austin, Brady, Ryan, and Aubrey. PROBABLE STARTERS...

HEAD COACH LARRY ANDERSON --- 251-200 in 17 years at MIT

Larry Anderson joined the MIT athletic department in 1995 as the 18th head men's basketball coach in program history and the fourth head coach in the modern era. Entering his 17th season at the helm, Anderson's coaching tenure is the second longest in Tech's basketball lore, while on November 29, 2008 he surpassed legendary Jack Barry as the winningest coach in the program's 101-year history.

Over the past three years, Anderson has guided MIT to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and helped the Engineers capture a pair of NEWMAC Championship titles while earning NEWMAC Coach of the Year honors in 2009. Also the 2005-06 NEWMAC Coach of the Year, Anderson took over a struggling program and decisively turned it into a contender. After enduring a tough opening campaign, he guided MIT to a 15-game turnaround that resulted in an 18-7 overall record.

While always advocating class and discipline, Anderson's teams play with reckless abandon, hustling on defense and diving for loose balls. In the last nine seasons, MIT has finished above .500 seven times, including a program-record 22 wins in 2010, earned two ECAC Tournament appearances and won its first NCAA Tournament game, a 73-68 upset of Rhode Island College in 2009.

Anderson arrived at MIT via Rust College in Holly Springs, Miss., where he graduated in 1986. After a senior stint as captain, Anderson remained at his alma mater as an Assistant Coach. While maintaining his devotion to the game of hoops and to Rust, he eventually assumed additional roles as the Associate Director of Athletics and Director of Student Activities.
