2021. With 2020 now behind us, we look forward positively to 2021 and a few more aircraft, hopefully, along with the opportunity at some point to be able to visit some foreign shores and hopefully resume our hobby amongst what is left of the aviation industry. Ironically as I type this the Supreme Court has ruled that Heathrow’s third runway is legal and can go ahead, but with the major retraction of passengers flying and the Government’s stance on the requirement to isolate when entering the country from abroad, it has to be seen whether the investment cost will outweigh the long-term benefit. This will be our first copy to be printed and mailed by Blueprint Printing Services, so please be patient should there be a few teething problems (we trust there are none) as we ensure we get what they need, and they establish exactly what we require. We look forward to a long and successful association with them and this is the starting point. Here’s to a healthy and prosperous 2021. Archive Section The archive section/nostalgia spot has gone down well with the majority of readers; however, I need some more contributions to keep it going. There are only a handful of photographers that have submitted items thus far, and I am sure there are loads more photographs from 1960 through to 2005 out there, so go on have a delve, see what you have and send them in for publication, let’s air those items that haven’t been seen yet. Photographs We are suffering from our usual dearth of photographs at this time of the year. I can publish more Ar- chive shots (if I get them) but want to balance the magazine between these and current items. So, if you have some shots, however mundane, please get them off to Jim (details on JA3) and stop the magazine being primarily text. AGM We sincerely hope we are in a position (vaccine roll out allowing) to hold a face to face AGM in 2021, however it may be likely that this will be in the latter part of the year, so The Committee must exercise the “extraordinary circumstances” provision to push this back from our required April/May target date. We did run an AGM on Zoom during 2020, however only 2 members outside of the Committee felt it was time well spent. If you feel that an AGM meeting via Zoom held around April/May would be something you would like to see, please come back to the Editor (details on JA3) and let me know. The Committee can then decide, based on the number of respondents, whether this would be a worthwhile exercise. Review I didn’t do a review of 2020 in December’s issue because it seemed there was little to highlight, however although there was much less to write about over the year, the quality was very much in evidence, so here goes; introduced their fine-looking ATRs to regular service, primarily out of Inverness, Aberdeen & Dundee in the early part of the year, then…JAN - 4 x USAF KC135s & 6 C-17s and 5N-FGT Nigerian Govt B737 at Prestwick. MAR - B-3869 Da-7X at Edinburgh with B-7699 BD700 at Glasgow; LOT repatriation flights at Edinburgh; TF-AMU Astral B747F & G-HLYF new Jet2 A321 at Prestwick; 13 x BA Airbuses parked up along with 3 x Virgin aircraft & 3 Flybe DHC-8’s after their collapse on the 5th. Add the Loganair aircraft parked up and there were almost 40 aircraft idle on the ground at Glasgow at month end. Swiftair B737 EC-NLS covered for West Atlantic flights over 10-12, while the 11 saw an unusual visitor in the shape of Croatian DHC-8 9A-CQF, the first time one of these has ventured here. Beech 1900 SEMHU (12) and Enter Air B737 SP-ESB (20) rounded off the notable movements. After the traumas of 2020, I’m sure we all hope for better days and some excursions in this new year.

This Ce208 (c/n 00010) was delivered in 1985, the first for Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF). After 35 years, mostly spent in the Democratic Republic of Congo, it was heading back to the USA where more regular age-related maintenance demands can be met. It has been replaced by Ce208B N145JV which arrived in Kinshasa on 08 Nov via the Azores. Ryanair B737s continue to leave fleet for freight conversion in China with EI-DAK leaving for Jinan via Nur-Sultan on 18 Nov followed by EI-DAJ routing via Nur-Sultan to Shanghai on 26 Nov. West Atlantic’s early morning Royal Mail sector from/to East Midlands (NPT037K/P or SWN037K/P) increased to five flights a week (Tue to Sat) with B737 G-JMCL on 06, 20, 24, 25, 27 & 28 Nov, G-JMCM on 03, 07, 10 & 21 Nov, GJMCT on 04, 05 & 11 Nov, and G-JMCU on 12, 14, 17, 18, 19 & 26 Nov with BAeATP SE-LPS on 13 Nov. In addition, NPT040/1 (Gatwick-East Midlands) was operated by G-JMCU on 20, 21 & 25 Nov with NPT040/101P (Gatwick-Warton) by G-JMCM on 24 Nov in lieu of KlasJet as detailed below. It has been reported that this flight is primarily COVID-19 testing kits to be analysed at Glasgow University’s Lighthouse Laboratory at the QEUH campus. A total of 73 missions were flown starting late on 12 Nov building up to four or five missions a day covering 24 hours with the next aircraft on station getting airborne 2 to 3 hours before the inbound aircraft landed. Most missions used a PP callsign plus three digits comprising two for the day and one for the mission on that day. Glasgow: Ce172 G-ISLY has been sold to a new owner and is now based at Birr in Ireland. Several of the stored BA A320s (DE30) have left for return to service, some not staying long at all, and more of the original batch of A321s here for most of the year are finding their way to Madrid for further storage. The EGPF website and airport movements in SCAN give the full picture. Making the one-month rule is G-IASC which arrived on 3 Nov as TF-MYV (formerly G-CLOW) and was placed on the UK Register on the 5th. After some work by Gama Aviation on behalf of IAS Medical it departed to the Isle of Man on 14 Dec for a new IAS contract there, but nominally based at Teesside with the rest of the fleet. Glenrothes: Airvan G-VANA detached on para-dropping duty with Skydive St Andrews between January and March 2020 and again from 7 Aug flew south on 9 Dec to Netherthorpe. For winter maintenance or departed for good? Having only arrived towards the end of last year (NO29), Heliair is advertising R22 G-ORMB, R44 G-HYND and R66 G-OHAS for sale so we expect them to depart at some point soon. Inverness: Ce406 G-SMMA flew Reims to Inverness on 6 Dec having been there for extended maintenance (or stuck there during French lockdowns) since 20th March. With G-SMMB having been at Leeds for a month in Sep- tember (NO29) this explains the presence of the two former English based aircraft G-MAFA and G-MAFB both of which are now back at Cranfield (NO29). Kirknewton: By 14 Dec SF260 N260AP had been repaired at Prestwick (NO29) and was back flying from here again. Longside: Based PA28 G-BSYZ has lost the name ”Knight of the Thistle” (although it retains the Scottish Knight on a black horse tail symbol) and was noted visiting Dundee on 19 Dec carrying a new name “Sgt Ben R Scaman RCAF 165 Squadron”. Perth: GlaStar G-MHGS has settled on here in preference to Strathaven or Cumbernauld, arriving for its new owner on 22 Nov although we think this may be a candidate for Balado in due course. Portmoak: Jodel D18 G-BODT formerly at Perth has changed ownership to C Chatburn t/a G-BODT Flying Group and having been away at Perth since 2015 arrived back after maintenance (from where?) on 21 Nov. Prestwick: PA28 G-BNGT present for the last five years with Aircraft Engineers but rarely flown and out of C of A since last May, is mentioned on Facebook as being fitted with a new engine and thereafter sold to a new owner down south. HELICOPTERS • Babcock – EC175: The first of the new aircraft expected (NO30) G-CLTB was registered on 20 Nov although this one is not going to be based at Aberdeen. The in-sequence UK registration was to cover time in this country for a repaint at Hawarden and modifications at Dyce where arrived on 13 Dec before heading to Denmark five days later where it became OY-HHZ; G-MCSE and G-MCSM left Aberdeen for Esbjerg on 13 and 6 Dec respectively and are now OY-HHY and OY-HHU; G-MCSN (OC30) was taken by road to and from Hawarden for repainting from its former CHC colours at the end of November; G-MCSO the next for delivery flew Marseille to Hawarden on 19 Dec for repaint then onwards to Aberdeen to become based: AS365: G-REDF positioned to Aberdeen for storage following the end of the contract at Blackpool on 30 Nov although it isn’t clear how long it will be here: AW139: G-PERD returned as expected (NO30) from Blackpool to Aberdeen on 30 Nov for a further period of storage. • CHC Scotia – S92: Paperwork issues have delayed the proposed move of G-CLNH from Humberside to Aberdeen (DE30) and it may not happen now. • Skyhook Helicopters – AS355 G-SCHZ still hasn’t made it to Scotland yet and it arrived at Blackpool on 13 Dec probably for pre-delivery work and possible re-registration (NO30). • Heliair – is advertising R22 G-ORMB, R44 G-HYND and R66 G-OHAS for sale so we expect them to move on from Glenrothes at some point. • R22 G-CDBG returned to HJS Helicopters at Culter Helipad after maintenance at Blackpool on 22 Nov replacing similar G-EPAR which went south the previous day having been present as cover since 19 Sep (OC37). • B206L G-PTOO made its first flight fromCumbernauld since 14 Oct when it flew north east on 28 Nov, destination unknown. • Bell 205 G-UHGB probably meets the criteria for the one-month Scottish residency rule (at least temporarily) as it Scottish Air News JA39 has been active in the Inverkip / Kilmacolm / Lochwinnoch area for the last month or so on pylon removal works. It is operational most days (weather permitting) and is believed to be parked overnight within the old power station site.

MICROLIGHTS – G-Mxxx’s & FLEXWINGS • G-CERP Quik has changed from an owner in Haddington to CR Chapman at an address in Earlston in the Borders but remains based at East Fortune West. • G-CGMZ QuikR is a prospective new resident at East Fortune West with an as-yet unknown owner. • G-CIMH Quik recently cancelled (DE31) has been restored to the Register with C Clarkson and is still based at Polmont – Nicolton Road.

HOMEBUILDS, GYROPLANES, RESTORATIONS, PRESERVATION, INACTIVE & UNALLOCATED • Stampe G-BKRK which has been at Little Gransden (SE403) now has a renewed Permit to Fly until November 2021. The owner used to live in Aboyne and it was assumed the aircraft would return to the airfield there, however his current address is in Birnie near Elgin immediately adjacent to Easterton airfield so perhaps it will become based there shortly? • Europa G-BVKF stored for the last seven years at the owner’s address in Aberdeen was cancelled from the Register by the CAA on 17 Dec as permanently withdrawn from use. We haven’t had any reports of this one since it left Longside airfield in 2013 so we will consign it to “Lost!” although it may well still be at the property and turn up somewhere in years to come. • The Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre is advertising on their Twitter feed for funds to acquire a fully restored Slingsby T38 Grasshopper TX1 primary glider. Pictured is WZ791 from the RAF Museum at Hendon although we don’t know if this is the actual aircraft involved. • Wessex HU5 XS510 brought north to Scotland (JA27 & DE31) has apparently been in the care of Morayvia in Kinloss village since Feb 2019. • Wessex HU5 XT773 (DE31) came north from Shawbury to Spey Bay where the Spey Bay Salvage Company has it at their premises. This firm also acquired the nose of Phantom FGR2 XV411 and possibly XZ215 Lynx AH7 (which, causing identity confusion, has the boom from XZ607) from the Fire Training School at Manston earlier in 2020. It seems a very long way to transport all these items and we wonder if they aren’t here for scrap but perhaps loosely connected with Morayvia. • The unidentified Sea King preserved since 2019 at the old gun battery at Stockiemuir north of Blanefield is said to be HU.5SAR XV705 code 29 which came from a private owner at Woodmancote in West Sussex. • Tornado GR1 ZA362 from the now closed Highland Aviation Museum at Dalcross moved south on 14 Dec to a new home at a so far undisclosed location south east of Coningsby where it is stored inside. ACCIDENTS & INCIDENTS 26 April 2020 Longside Airfield, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire Rans S6-ES, G-YTLY private The pilot reported that he planned to carry out a local flight from Longside Airfield near Aberdeen. He took off in a light westerly wind using Runway 28 and at 1,000 ft encountered turbulence. He decided not to continue with the flight and returned to the airfield; however, by this time the surface wind conditions had changed making Runway 10 more suitable for landing. The pilot said he encountered no difficulty during the approach, with the speed and attitude appearing normal. However, as he flared the aircraft, it descended rapidly, landed hard and bounced before coming to a standstill. The impact broke the nosewheel leg, which collapsed and resulted in damage to the cockpit structure and propeller.

The need to provide a new railway station for Inverness Airport has long been recognised, both via historic permissions, development plan policies and more recently via an application made by HiTrans in October 2016, permission for which was renewed by the local authority in April 2020. Plans for a £5m single track station at the site were first submitted in 2017 but never progressed. Prestwick Airport Passenger numbers were as follows - October: 6,100, -91.1% on October 2019. Scottish Air News JA41 AIRLINE NEWS Please note that there is so much going on in terms of cancelled services and amended timetables that it’s likely that the information below could be out of date very quickly. However, we are trying to report the most important changes as they happen. From November 2020, we will also attempt to report all Scottish related movements into/out of storage as we get the info. Hop! will dispose of all CRJ700s/1000s and Embraer 145s to become an all Embraer 170/190 carrier by the end of 2021 and have just 50% of its previous capacity. The airline would disappear from Paris Orly, where it would be replaced by Transavia France. Hop’s operations would be focused at Paris CDG and Lyon St. Exupéry. The airline operates some Air France schedules at Edinburgh, and most at Aberdeen. Ryanair has placed an order for 75 additional 737 MAX8-200 aircraft, increasing its order book to 210 airframes. Ryanair is the launch customer for the high-capacity 737-8 variant, having placed its first order for 100 frames and 100 options in late 2014, followed by firm orders of 10 aircraft in 2017 and 25 in 2018. The 737 8-200 has 197 seats in Ryanair configuration, potentially reducing fuel consumption by 16 percent compared to the airline’s B737-800s. Volga Dnepr Airlines It’s worth reporting that Antonov 124 RA-82042 has been declared a write off following its mishap at Novosibirsk on 13 November 2020. The aircraft was prepared for a flight to Vienna, carrying car parts from South Korea. During takeoff, the number two engine suffered an uncontained failure, resulting in the failure of the power supply of the aircraft, radio communications, braking system and a limitation in the the thrust control of the remaining engines. The aircraft landed again but was not able to stop on the runway and overran, coming to rest 300m past the end. The nose landing gear had collapsed. Fragments of what appeared to be the fan disk were found inside a warehouse near the airport. The aircraft itself also sustained damage. Debris had penetrated the left hand side of the fuselage and leading edge slats. A hole in the right hand top fuselage suggests debris had gone through the skin and possibly damaged the main spar. The aircraft was seen from time to time at Prestwick, visiting more than 30 times since the early nineties, but hadn’t visited since August 2013.

INDUSTRY NEWS Netjets Europe has applied to set up a UK AOC, and John Dyer reports that three Citation 560XLSs have UK registrations reserved - G-NJAA/B/C ex CS-DXW/X/Y. Paris Air Show The 2021 Paris Air Show has been cancelled, due to ongoing concerns over Covid 19 and the ability of the industry to recover in its aftermath. Scottish Air News JA43 MILITARY NEWS The ordered Wedgetail aircraft are to be based at RAF Lossiemouth, it has been announced. The fleet will begin to arrive in 2023, although no decision has been taken yet on how many aircraft that will mean. The initial order is for two conversions, though it is not clear where the ordered aircraft are coming from, since Boeing 737NG aircraft other than P-8s are no longer in production. It was thought that the aircraft would be new build machines, but it seems now that they will be conversions of used aircraft.

And finally.... Russia’s internal affairs ministry is probing an incident involving alleged theft from a Russian Air Force Ilyushin IL-80 command and control aircraft. The IL-80 is a heavily-modified airframe based on the IL-86 passenger transport, notably featuring a characteristic equipment pod on the upper forward fuselage. Three of the type are still in operation. Law enforcement officials from the internal affairs ministry’s investigation department state that they have “opened a criminal case” over the “theft of property from an aircraft” at Taganrog airfield. The department says police were informed by a company in the city that property worth more than Rb1 million ($13,500) had been “stolen” from the aircraft. It has not specified when the alleged theft took place, nor how it was accomplished, and it has not detailed the nature of the property taken or identified the airframe involved. Somehow, we don’t think a police caution or a small fine would be on the cards.....

OSHKOSH July 26-28 2019 by David Steele

I attended this event for 3 days and as way of background for those who have never been it is a huge event. The airfield is laid out into distinct themed areas. Camping/parking, vintage light, vintage military, themed by type light civil, exhibition area, floatplane base, military, helicopter/camping, workshops, museum etc. Linking these areas there are a series of shuttle trains (small tractors pulling passenger trollies). It would be a major expedition to walk round the whole site, and with aircraft arriving and departing the whole time a fairly pointless exercise, as gaps in the parking rows appear and are refilled. During the day there is a flying display- it varies daily. A mixture of professional display pilots, the military and what- ever the theme is for the event. This year it was aerial firefighters. Boeing also have a presence. The flying tends to be loud and noisy with a fair bit of chest beating on the part of the participants and a proportion of the crowd. On a couple of nights, the display extends into the evening again with plenty of noise and music but with added light displays.

For number crunchers it is unbeatable and is also a useful exercise in beginning to understand why many Amer- icans think they won WW2 on their own and every war since. Despite that there was a significant percentage of very charming, interesting people to chat to, who are very willing to explain what their aircraft was, and its history. As in life if you displayed a little bit of knowledge they were fascinating to listen to. There are virtually no barriers between you and millions of dollars of aircraft. You are pretty much left to wander around. I spent a couple of days trudging some of the more specialist areas, then on the final Sunday parked at the side of one of the departure runways. There are two at 90 degrees to each other. You will never see everything and just accept that before you go. 10,000 aircraft approximately over 7 days is a lot!

Highlights are far too many but; -discussing the relative merits between a Bearcat and a superlative Sea Fury parked next to each other, with the Bearcat pilot. We agreed to disagree with a laugh. -speaking to some “jim crack” aircraft salesman about the Cirrus Vision and how you could lift 6 people plus baggage on 1850lbs of thrust from its single engine. He had no idea of the engine’s rating. -speaking to the pilot of the scruffiest looking Cessna 172 imaginable in amongst a line of concours class 1930/40s American light aircraft polished to within an inch of their lives. -still not being able to really identify the difference between a Vans 4/5/6/7 etc. just there were a lot of them, which ever model it is.

I chose to stay in Appleton just up the road and with plenty of alternatives to aircraft orientated attractions, plus accommodation is a bit cheaper. An excellent coach shuttle gets you in and out of the site at 30 dollars daily return in around 30 minutes. No hunting for a hire car where you cannot recall what model it is and in which car park you left it. Entry tickets for the 3 days cost around 80 dollars total. Bit of a bargain compared to the likes of RIAT. The weather can be very hot so as a consequence there can be extremely heavy downpours. Our flight out of Appleton was severely delayed due to storms in the area.

As there was no event in 2020, hopefully you have started saving for 2021!
