With 2020 now behind us, we look forward positively to 2021 and a few more aircraft, hopefully, along with the opportunity at some point to be able to visit some foreign shores and hopefully resume our hobby amongst what is left of the aviation industry. Ironically as I type this the Supreme Court has ruled that Heathrow’s third runway is legal and can go ahead, but with the major retraction of passengers flying and the Government’s stance on the requirement to isolate when entering the country from abroad, it has to be seen whether the investment cost will outweigh the long-term benefit. This will be our first copy to be printed and mailed by Blueprint Printing Services, so please be patient should there be a few teething problems (we trust there are none) as we ensure we get what they need, and they establish exactly what we require. We look forward to a long and successful association with them and this is the starting point. Here’s to a healthy and prosperous 2021. Archive Section The archive section/nostalgia spot has gone down well with the majority of readers; however, I need some more contributions to keep it going. There are only a handful of photographers that have submitted items thus far, and I am sure there are loads more photographs from 1960 through to 2005 out there, so go on have a delve, see what you have and send them in for publication, let’s air those items that haven’t been seen yet. Photographs We are suffering from our usual dearth of photographs at this time of the year. I can publish more Ar- chive shots (if I get them) but want to balance the magazine between these and current items. So, if you have some shots, however mundane, please get them off to Jim (details on JA3) and stop the magazine being primarily text. AGM We sincerely hope we are in a position (vaccine roll out allowing) to hold a face to face AGM in 2021, however it may be likely that this will be in the latter part of the year, so The Committee must exercise the “extraordinary circumstances” provision to push this back from our required April/May target date. We did run an AGM on Zoom during 2020, however only 2 members outside of the Committee felt it was time well spent. If you feel that an AGM meeting via Zoom held around April/May would be something you would like to see, please come back to the Editor (details on JA3) and let me know. The Committee can then decide, based on the number of respondents, whether this would be a worthwhile exercise. Review I didn’t do a review of 2020 in December’s issue because it seemed there was little to highlight, however although there was much less to write about over the year, the quality was very much in evidence, so here goes; Loganair introduced their fine-looking ATRs to regular service, primarily out of Inverness, Aberdeen & Dundee in the early part of the year, then…JAN - 4 x USAF KC135s & 6 C-17s and 5N-FGT Nigerian Govt B737 at Prestwick. FEB - D-CPDA PZL M-28 & D-AVWA A319neo prototype at Edinburgh; C-GUDH B787 at Glasgow; 1st RAF P-8A Poseidon arrived at Kinloss; no less than 32 USAF C-17s at Prestwick. MAR - B-3869 Da-7X at Edinburgh with B-7699 BD700 at Glasgow; LOT repatriation flights at Edinburgh; TF-AMU Astral B747F & G-HLYF new Jet2 A321 at Prestwick; 13 x BA Airbuses parked up along with 3 x Virgin aircraft & 3 Flybe DHC-8’s after their collapse on the 5th. Add the Loganair aircraft parked up and there were almost 40 aircraft idle on the ground at Glasgow at month end. APR - 1962 C27 Spartan & 2 x Tecnam P2012s on delivery at Aberdeen; 9K-AOD carried out repatriation flights at Glasgow; VP-BIN & VP-BBL B747Fs carried out PPE charters into Prestwick. MAY - P4-PKZ CL604 at Aberdeen; EZ-A007 B737 at Glasgow; B-2445 Air China B747 at Edinburgh; Prestwick had the lion’s share with A7-MAN C-17, RA-76503 Il-76, C-FNCU DHC-8, G-CLAA B747F & N704GT B777F through the month. There was also copious A400 Atlas overshoots at most of the main fields through the month. JUL - 09-0042 CV-22 Osprey; B-2037& B2039 Air China B777s at Edinburgh; Another 3 x Tecnam P2012s at Ab- erdeen; A7-MAA & 1228 Qatari & UAE AF C-17s and Airbus KC-30M T-055 at Prestwick. The A400M overshoots at various fields were complemented regularly by RAF C-17s. AUG - biggest movement of the year UR-82060 An-225, 4 A-29 Texans for the Afghan AF A7-MAP & MAM Qatari AF C-17s, N409LC L-100 RA-82077 & 82073 An-124s, 02 Hungarian/NATO C-17, N782SP Samaritans Purse DC-8 and finally 1224 & 1228 UAE AF C-17s all at Prestwick; UP-C8505 Challenger 850 and Red Arrows at Edinburgh; VT-ALH Air India B777 & 4X-ABG Israir A320 at Glasgow; yet another Tecnam P2012 on delivery via Aberdeen; G-IRTY & G-ILDA Supermarine Spitfires at Dundee to round the month off. Item Action Point 1. Chair’s opening remarks: CF welcomed everyone to the meeting. 2. Apologies: Cllr Maggie Taylor, Mark Sharp, Dave Baxter, Jim Finnie, Jenny Ramsay, Steve Simpson 3. Presentation – Community cafe E Gibson spoke of her plans to open a community social hub/café in the old estate agent premises during 2016. It is hoped volunteers will run it and that it might create local jobs. Flyers will be distributed soon to canvass opinion on setting up the café. SB suggested EG might apply for community covenant funding and that she might be able to help promote it. Cllr Brett also suggested EG speaks with Balmullo and Guardbridge community councils. 4. Presentation – Biomass pipe laying at Guardbridge Steve Bargeton introduced himself, Dave Rainey and Phil Hutchison. DR/PH are engineers with Vital, the company installing the biomass plant at Guardbridge. There followed a presentation about the likely traffic diversion from 15.02.16-08.04.16 when a section of the pipe which will cross the main road is being installed. Everyone had the opportunity to ask questions, including about bus routes, closure dates etc.

There was little gunpowder this Guy Fawkes, but plenty of “treason and plot”. Over the past few months, we have witnessed the NPA making the first big moves against corruption. What started with the arrests of seven people involved in the asbestos saga culminated in the news of the arrest warrant for ANC secretary general Ace Magashule issued on Tuesday, 10 November. The shock waves are reverberating through the ANC.... The “State of Disaster” extended for another month. Surprise, surprise….

    Remembering Tentsmuir during World War Two by Lech Muszynski Defending Scotland They were also playing cat and mouse games with the Germans. They were under orders not to shoot the German spotter planes as they were coming in from Norway to see what was going on. They were under orders to shoot at them but to miss them so they would go back to Norway and tell them that the beaches were well defended. Right enough, if you go up there now you can still see the fences, the big posts and everything, the wire stretched around the sand and everything. Part of it is still there. After the war, there was a German report from Norway. They said that they abandoned the idea of invading Scotland. They wanted to invade Scotland, cut Scotland in half, but they abandoned it after the had reports that Scotland was so well defended. And itʼs not true because most of the big guns that they did see was telephone poles. They were painted and things like that and even, even some of, some of the big guns at Russaks Hotel at St Andrews. They were all telegraph poles painted to look like guns. And it worked, it really worked. I was there with my sons about 15 years ago, aye about 15 years ago. And thereʼs still places where there were barracks and tents and whatever. Thereʼs still bits of old kitchens and things like that. And everythingʼs been cleared away but I found a bit of a Polish flag in the ground.
