By the time we return to Stratford in 2010 these actors will have been working together for over a year, and equipped to bring you a rich repertoire of eight Shakespeare productions as well as our new dramatisation of Morte D’Arthur, directed by Gregory Doran. As last year’s work grows and deepens with the investment of time, so new productions arrive from our exciting new Noma Dumezweni Dyfan Dwyfor Associate Directors David Farr and Rupert Goold, who open the Phillip Edgerley Christine Entwisle season with King Lear and Romeo and Juliet. Later, our new Artistic Associate Kathryn Hunter plays her first Shakespearean title role with the RSC in my production of Antony and Cleopatra, and we follow the success of our Young People’s The Comedy of Errors with a Hamlet conceived and directed by our award winning playwright in residence, Tarell Alvin McCraney. I hope that you will come and see our work as we continue to explore just how potent a long term community of wonderfully talented artists can be. MS41 Branagh Collection About the collection: Background: The Sir Kenneth Branagh Archive originated in a substantial bequest to Queen's University from Sir Kenneth Branagh in 2000. The original bequests have been supplemented by donations from other sources, including commercial bodies (such as Naxos), charitable organisations (such as the Ulster Association of Youth Drama) and individuals (such as Mark Thornton Burnett, Sarah Hatchuel and Jude Tessel). Overview: The Archive consists of material relating to the professional life and work of Sir Kenneth Branagh. It is largely made up of paper documents (many are photocopies), but also holds recordings and merchandise related to individual productions. Original items (i.e. not photocopies) are marked as such in the listing. The Branagh Archive is an open collection, so periodically items will be added – from 2006 onwards the date items were added is noted. Arrangement: The material is arranged in 7 main headings: Theatre, Television, Film, Radio/Audio, General, Recordings and Oversized Material. Where material relating to a production allows, it is arranged by the type of material: Production Material, Publicity Material, Press/Reviews/Criticism, Publications and Merchandise. The General heading lists material which does not relate to any specific production (i.e. profiles and general biographical material). It also includes material relating to organisations with which Sir Kenneth Branagh is associated (Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and the Ulster Youth Theatre). Working Paper Series SPECIAL ISSUE: REVISITING AUDIENCES: RECEPTION, IDENTITY, TECHNOLOGY The Ghost of J.K. Rowling: Harry Potter and the Ur-Fan Dion McLeod University of Wollongong Travis Holland Charles Sturt University Abstract: THis paper is a speculative engagement with the Harry Potter fan community, wHicH includes author J.K. Rowling as an active participant. We reconsider Rowling’s post-textual interventions into (re)interpretations of Her work in ligHt of Roland Barthes’ rHetorical questioning of the death of the author and suggest a conceptual framework to consider authors wHo enact this type of fannisH beHaviour. By participating in these communities, sucH authors repudiate Barthes’ supposed “death of the author”. In Rowling’s case, the authorial interventions occur primarily on Twitter, and it is the immediacy of social media cHannels that facilitates their impact. We draw on the concept of the “ur-text” to develop a description of the “ur-fan” to account for this fannisH practice, suggesting that Rowling is the arcHetypal ur-fan. Ur-fans straddle two roles that are often artificially demarcated: expert and fan. WHile fans Have immersed themselves in their respective storyworlds for decades, Rowling’s Hyper-active media presences (especially on Twitter) position Her in this role and sets the Harry Potter fandom apart from many other fan communities.
