Felipe Cabrera Cardenas MUSICIANS SHORT BIOGRAPHIES Swami Jr (Guitar and Musical Director) Swami began studying classical guitar at the age of 12 with maestro Alfredo Scupinari in São Paulo, Brazil. In the early 1980s Swami formed the groups Purple Xoro and It Moves with Everything, and toured Europe throughout the decade. He has worked with numerous artists including Daniela Mercury, Elba Ramalho, Virginia Rosa, Tom Zé, and has been a long term member of Chico César’s band. In 2000 he released his first album ‘Imã’, an instrumental record with saxophonist Mané Silveira. In 2006 he is nominated to the Grammy Latino under the category of “Sound Engineering”, for the “De uns Tempos pra Cá” from composer Chico César. Since his participation in Omara Portuondo’s former album “Flor de Amor”, Swami has been part of her regular band both as a guitarist and musical director. In 2007 he released his new album “Outra Praia”. Swami Jr. is currently the musical director of Omara Portuondo’s touring band, and co-producer of her new album “Gracias”. Roberto Fonseca (Piano) Roberto Fonseca is one of the most talented, profound and charismatic young musicians to emerge from Cuba in recent times. Given the extraordinary level of musical talent on the island this is no easy claim. Cuban music is thriving and the Buena Vista Social Club has been at the forefront. For 3 years Roberto Fonseca has been their pianist, having succeeded the legendary Ruben González. Fonseca possesses a unique, instrumental voice and emotionally powerful style. His compositions draw on jazz, classical music, traditional Cuban music and Afro-Cuban heritage. He launched his solo career in February 2007 with his album ZAMAZU on ENJA records. The album was a huge success among critics and audiences all over the world. Not a single review of these concerts, from South and North America to Europe and Asia, would fail to mention Fonseca’s talent and his magnetic stage presence. Before Ibrahim’s death in August 2005 he produced and arranged Ibrahim’s last album, his dream of a whole set of boleros, released in March 2007 on World Circuit Records. The album called Mi Sueño was nominated in 2007 for the Latin Grammy Awards under the category of Best Traditional Tropical Album. Avishai Cohen (Double Bass) There is no better way to describe Avishai Cohen than stating that he is truly a veteran despite the fact that he has yet to reach forty years of age, paradoxical as that may seem. Born in Israel in 1970, Cohen’s career really began to take off when he moved to New York after completing his piano and bass studies in Israel and Saint Louis. A colleague of future stars such as Brad Mehldau and a student of Andy González, the bass player soon began trying his hand at jazz and Latin American music. He was an occasional member of the New York- Barcelona Flamenco Reunion group led by Marc Miralta and of the Danilo Pérez trio, with whom he recorded Panamonk (Impulse). Cohen rose to fame thanks to Chick Corea, who enlisted him for his sextet Origin. Corea also afforded him the opportunity to make his record debut with his own album: Adama (Stretch/Concord). Chosen by the Bass Player magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential Bass Players of the 20th Century, Avishai Cohen has also worked with Bobby McFerrin, Roy Hargrove, Herbie Hancock and Paquito D’Rivera, and his studio recordings include working with Alicia Keys. Avishai Cohen has recently been working with his trio on the release of his eighth album: Gently Disturbed (Razdaz). The grandson of a renowned sitar performer and son of famous singer Shobha Gurtu, Trilok (Bombay, 1950) began playing at the tender age of six. Gurtu rose to fame as a result of the two years he spent working with the trumpeter Don Cherry, who was one of the founders of world music. Gurtu’s fame was also due to his tours with Oregon and his involvement with the quartet led by L. Shankar with Jan Garbarek and Zakir Hussain. However, one professional relationship that marked his career was his allegiance with the guitarist John McLaughlin who he met in 1988. He was a member of his trio for four years. Trilok Gurtu is one of the most sought- after Eastern percussionists by musicians of all styles and one of the performers who has delved most deeply into the sphere of world music and its interplay with such diverse genres as jazz, rock, pop or electronic music. Andrés Coayo (Cuban Percussion) He took part on Roberto Faz Orchestra, Conjunto Casino, Yumurí and brothers, the grupo Mezcla, and salsa player Isaac Delgado’s well-known band, with which he recorded the album “Versos en el cielo”. Since 2003, he has been a key member in Omara Portuondo’s group, performing with huge success in virtually every European country, North and South America. Chico Buarque A poet, musician, composer, playwright and novelist, Chico Buarque was born to a family of intellectuals in Rio de Janeiro in 1944. He gave his debut performances in 1964. However, following his arrest owing to his political allegiance, he was compelled to leave the country like so many of his compatriots after a number of years owing to the dictatorship, and so he moved to Italy in 1969. A year later he returned in order to raise again his voice against the dictatorial regime through the medium of music. During this period one of his singles – “A pesar de você” – sold in excess of 100,000 copies before being banned owing to censorship. Heavily influenced by the lyricism of Jobim’s arrangements, Buarque has always stood out on account of his ability as a composer to address in his songs, as with his poetry or novels, social and intimate issues. Indeed, a number of Brazilian musicians have stated that they owe their works to him, including Maria Bethânia and Rosa Passos. Born in Cameroon in 1967, Richard Bona’s first encounter with music was at the age of five when he began singing in public in the church choir alongside his mother and sisters. Blessed with inborn talent, at 11 he was already playing the guitar in the bars in Douala. By chance he moved on to the bass thanks to a Frenchman, and indeed it was in France that he began to achieve international renown. He went to Paris at the age of 22 and shortly thereafter he was playing alongside some of the foremost musicians in the country such as Marc Ducret or Didier Lockwood. In Paris he polished up his theoretical knowledge before being encouraged by guitarist Mike Stern to take the leap to the United States where he met Zawinul who took him into his group Zawinul Syndicate for their world tour for the album My People. He would later become the musical director for Harry Belafonte’s band. Thenceforth, a great number of musicians have called upon his talent as a bass virtuoso, including Pat Metheny, Branford Marsalis and Chaka Khan. Moreover, Bona has established his solo career on account of his ability to blend the essence of jazz with the styles of his country and the art of the griots. Jorge Drexler Born in Montevideo in 1964, Jorge Drexler earned acclaim for being the first Uruguayan ever to win an Academy Award, a distinction he won for the song “Al otro lado del día” which was included in the film The Motorcycle Diaries. Having graduated with a degree in medicine, Drexler embarked on his career from the grassroots level supporting artists like Caetano Veloso and Joaquín Sabina on a tour of his native Uruguay. His meeting with Sabina led him to travel to Spain to support him at three concerts. As a result of this visit Drexler settled in Madrid. Not only has Drexler achieved renown as a singer – his discography has more than ten titles – he is also a prominent songwriter and his compositions figure in the repertoire of singer-songwriters such as Pablo Milanés, Retama, Neneh Cherry, David Broza, Adriana Varela or the Uruguayan Jaime Roos. Film is another area in which Drexler’s productions stand out, as illustrated by his contribution on the soundtrack to The Motorcycle Diaries. Indeed, he even became film material on the DVD directed by Manuel Huerga, which comes with his compilation album Cara B (Dro). • A Comparative Case Study of the Political Economy of Music in Cuba and Argentina by Paul Ruffner Honors Capstone Prof
Music, Money, and the Man: A Comparative Case Study of the Political Economy of Music in Cuba and Argentina By Paul Ruffner Honors Capstone Prof. Clarence Lusane May 4, 2009 Political economy is an interpretive framework which has been applied to many different areas in a wide range of societies. Music, however, is an area which has received remarkably little attention; this is especially surprising given the fact that music from various historical periods contains political messages. An American need only be reminded of songs such as Billy Holliday’s “Strange Fruit” or the general sentiments of the punk movement of the 1970s and 80s to realize that American music is not immune to this phenomenon. Cuba and Argentina are two countries with remarkably different historical experiences and economic structures, yet both have experience with vibrant traditions of music which contains political messages, which will hereafter be referred to as political music. That being said, important differences exist with respect to both the politics and economics of the music industries in the two countries. Whereas Cuban music as a general rule makes commentaries on specific historical events and political situations, its Argentine counterpart is much more metaphorical in its lyrics, and much more rhythmically and structurally influenced by American popular music. These and other differences can largely be explained as resulting from the relations between the community of musicians and the state, more specifically state structure and ideological affiliation in both cases, with the addition of direct state control over the music industry in the Cuban case, whereas the Argentine music industry is dominated largely by multinational concerns in a liberal democratic state.

  • BIO TIGRAN HAMASYAN in Its Ever-Evolving State, Jazz Invites Into
BIO TIGRAN HAMASYAN In its ever-evolving state, jazz invites into its fold imaginative artists who freely and courageously pursue their own vision, not only built on tradition but also infused with their own personality and passion. In the case of pianist/keyboardist Tigran Hamasyan, potent jazz improvisation fuses with the rich folkloric music of his native Armenia. Tigran is one of the most remarkable and distinctive jazz-meets-rock pianists of his generation. Tigran’s fresh sound is marked by an exploration of time signatures, charged dynamics, the shifting between acoustic and electric modes of expression, all undergirded by an affinity to the grind of heavy metal. Born in Gyumri, Armenia, in 1987, Tigran grew up in a household that was full of music—his father more of a rock fan while his uncle was a huge jazz buff. When he was just a toddler, Tigran gravitated to tape players and the piano instead of regular childhood toys, and by the time he was 3, he was working his way through figuring out songs on piano by the Beatles, Louis Armstrong, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Queen. His jazz tastes early on were informed by Miles Davis’s fusion period, and then around the age of 10 when his family moved to Yerevan, he came to discover the classic jazz songbook under the aegis of his teacher Vahag Hayrapetyan, who had studied with Barry Harris. Tigran chose to study music. While he studied classical music at an Armenian high school geared toward music studies, Tigran continued to grow on his own as a jazz pianist.

Two years later, Burton left his studies at Berklee College of Music to join George Shearing and Stan Getz, with whom he worked from 1964 to 1966. As a member of Getz's quartet, Burton won Down Beat Magazine's “Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition” award in 1965. By the time he left Getz to form his own quartet in 1967, Burton had recorded three solo albums. Borrowing rhythms and sonorities from rock music, while maintaining jazz's emphasis on improvisation and harmonic complexity, Burton's first quartet attracted large audiences from both sides of the jazz-rock spectrum. Such albums as Duster and Lofty Fake Anagram established Burton and his band as progenitors of the jazz fusion phenomenon.
