BY ELLIS PARK PRESS OFFICE______HENDERSON, KY—Trainer and co-owner Wes Hawley thought so much of the 4-year-old Absolutely Aiden—a colt that he claimed last fall for $40,000—that he consid- ered going out to California for Del Mar’s Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes. So Hawley certainly expected Absolutely Aiden to win Sunday’s $50,000 Good Lord Stakes, and the colt did just that in his stakes debut. Indeed, the only thing that surprised Hawley was that Absolutely Aiden paid $8.20 to win as the mild favorite in the field of 10 older horses. “This is a good horse,” Hawley said. “Actually I couldn’t believe he was 3-1. I thought he’d be 8-5, 9-5. I was pleased with the race, pleased with the time. I mean, he’s a good horse.” Absolutely Aiden on paper appeared to be the horse to catch, being in front or head-and-head for the lead in most his races for Hawley. But Gray Attempt, breaking on the rail, went determinedly to the front, with jockey Chris Landeros positioning Absolutely Aiden a head or neck behind while just to the outside. As Gray Attempt began weakening after a blazing first quarter-mile in :21.91, Absolutely Aiden took over on the turn with a pack in pursuit. He drew clear in mid-stretch before set- tling for a three-quarters-of-a-length victory over Home Base. “He didn’t actually act like he needed the lead today,” Hawley said. “It was just a beautiful ride by Chris, and the horse just did a heck of a job.” “It was a really good race today,” Landeros said. “I Absolutely Aiden/COADY PHOTO thought I’d be on the lead, but [Gray Attempt] jumped out Landeros is now three-for-four on Absolutely Aiden, losing there and wanted it. BY MONMOUTH PARK PRESS OFFICE______OCEANPORT, NJ—Trainer Michael Pino was pretty sure he had a stakes-caliber grass horse in Vanzzy. Now he’s certain of it. Sitting an ideal trip behind dueling leaders, Vanzzy shot through an opening along the rail coming out of the final turn and powered his way to a three- and-a-half-length victory in Sunday’s $100,000 Jersey Derby at Monmouth Park. After a fourth-place finish in the Grade 2 Pennine Ridge Stakes at Belmont on June 20 and then a third in the Grade 3 Kent Stakes at Delaware Park on July 4 in his first two grass tries, the 3-year-old son of Verrazano out of Selva, by Forest Wildcat had his turf breakthrough in the 77th edition of the Jersey Derby. Looking ‘Good’ Maximum Security was “good” Sunday morning, following an all-out effort for a nose victory ahead of Midcourt in Saturday’s $150,000 San Diego Handicap (Grade 2), trainer Bob Baffert reported to the Del Mar publicity staff. “I actually thought he was pretty good right after the race being that I only had him about 80 percent,” Baffert said. “I didn’t think he’d have to do a stop-and-go movement [during the race] but he showed what a great horse he is. “It’s a good starting point.
