United Doberman Club Breed Survey Linda Calamia, UDC Breed Survey Judge

The United Doberman Club Breed Survey is modeled after the Doberman Verien (DV) Zuchttauglichkeitsprufung (ZTP) or breeding fitness test and includes a thorough conformation evaluation followed by a temperament evaluation. There are two levels of test, the BSA (Breed Survey Advanced) for trained dogs and the BSB (Breed Survey Basic) for untrained dogs. Before the dog is accepted for the evaluation, the handler must submit results of certain basic health tests such as hip x- rays, thyroid testing, and VWD (von Willebrand's) test. The results of an echocardiogram and an eye test can be turned in at a later date. The first part of both tests is exactly the same and includes a conformation evaluation where the dog encounters being handled and examined by strangers. During the conformation evaluation, the judge evaluates the dog according to the modified UDC standard, which is equivalent to the AKC standard except that more than two missing teeth is a disqualifica- tion. The judge measures the dog’s height and length with a wicket. The judge examines the dog’s bite to make sure that the dog is neither undershot nor overshot and also counts the dog’s teeth (Dobermans should have 42). The judge asks the handler to move the dog to assess the dog’s carriage and movement.

A series of social temperament tests follows the conformation evaluation, including walking the dog through mingling crowds who will open an umbrella, shake a satchel with noisy objects, and crowd the dog, The dog is exposed to a jogger and gunfire. There will also be a tie out whereby the owner will leave the dog and go out of sight for a period of time, fol- lowed by the judge approaching the dog who should not show any shyness or aggressiveness. If the dog is steady in the social temperament tests, the next phase is the protective evaluation. The difference between the BSA and the BSB is that there is no bite work in the BSB since this test is for untrained dogs. In the BSA, the dog is required to bite a sleeve and must perform an out at least once. There is a surprise attack and a courage test. In the BSB, the alert, protective behavior is shown in a situation similar to what you would encounter in the WAE whereby the dog alerts and protects the owner from a threat by standing between the owner and a threatening stranger and barking to drive the threatening stranger away, but does not receive and opportunity to grip the sleeve. Throughout the entire examination, the dog is expected to react appropriately, to protect when necessary and to calm and quiet when there is no threat. Dogs who pass the Breed Survey receive a Breed Survey designation with a conformation rating, a temperament rating, and a health rating. A dog who passes the BSB may take the BSA at a later date if so de- sired. Breed Survey participants must bring their own flat collar (non-choker), a fur-saver collar, and a sturdy six-foot leather leash for the Breed Survey evaluation.

Required Health Tests for Breed Survey All participants must submit copies of the following health tests with entry to participate in the Breed Survey: For “B” Health Rating: OFA Hip Certificate, VWD Genetic Test, OFA Thyroid Panel For “A” Health Rating: OFA CAER (CERF) for eyes, Echocardiogram by Board Certified Cardiologist in addition to tests re- quired for “B” rating. Hip Certification and VWD Genetic Tests do not need to be repeated after the first result. Thyroid, CAER, and Echocardio- gram results must be current within 18 months of the date of the Breed Survey evaluation.

DPCA Working Aptitude Evaluations (WAE) Pat Murphy (Cornelius), Esq., WAE Evaluator

The purpose of this evaluation is to help determine if your Doberman has the aptitude to do the work for which the breed was intended. Dogs must be 18 months or older, be of an allowed color (no albinos/whites) with z-factored dogs allowed after showing proof of spay/neuter, and must be AKC registered or have ILP.

The DPCA maintains an extensive guide to the WAE for Doberman owners here: http://dpca.org/awards/wae/index.php. Please be sure to visit the DPCA website and read through the rules for the event. Please complete the online entry form here: http://dpca.org/awards/wae/documents/WAE-entry-form.pdf and mail it along with your UDC entry form(s). Tamas Dohóczki H-2049 Nagykovácsi Semmelweis u. 30. Hungary IPO & Conformation Judge

Since 1989 I have been a member of the Hungarian (MEOESz). In al- most 30 years I have received many honors from the current MEOESz Presidents and have been elected to the MEOESZ's Board of Supervisors on three occasions, and am still a member of the Board. For over 30 years I have been breeding , from my kennel von Karpa- tia, not only for correct conformation but also for correct working mentality and health. This has been proven by many renowned dogs, such as Questor and Axel, with whom I participated in several competitions and tournaments, including twice at IDC. I have trained many Dobermanns from my own breeding to IPO I - III lev- els and also dogs from other kennels, many of which I have successfully participat- ed in competitions. India von Karpatia was the first and only Hungarian Dobermann bitch who did the German Körung exam, and her daughter Tititaka von Karpatia was also the only one in Hungary to get ZVA Körung. To date, 50 litters have been born in the von Karpa- tia kennel, many of which are all over the world. For 7 years I was a dog breeder at my own dog school, later I went on to train with other breeds. Currently I'm a table tennis coach. In 1993 I became the protection champion of the first Hungarian National Dober- mann Championship with my dog Valdimora Questo. This year at the Austrian Dobermann Championship I was also the first in the protection phase. Since 2002 I am the president of the Dobermann Club of Hungary. As a president of HDK, I have enjoyed many profes- sional achievements. Among others, the club has been internationally acknowledged and with my contribution, I have restored the membership of the club in IDC. In 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2017, I was the organizer of IDC conformation competition in Hungary, and in 2012 and 2016 I was the main organizer of IDC working competition. In 2019 I will again be the organizer of the Dobermann World Championships to be held in Hungary and the Dobermann World Expo.

In 2003 I introduced the German ZTP exams in Hungary where I am an examiner and participant (27 ZTP's).

Among other things, I am a FCI IPO Performance Judge, Qualified Assistant and FCI Dobermann conformation judge. 2009 National Dobermann Championship 2010 auxiliary review at the Atibox World Championship 2010 B Division of the Slovak IDC Work World Championships 2011 IDC conformation 2012 Judge of the sector at IDC Italy 2012 Spanish Dobermann Championship 2014 IDC Slovakia 2016 French Club Exhibition 2016 Germany, CAC 2016 Trophy Winner, Austria 2016 IDC Italy 2017 Judge B in the Italian IDC Working Dog Championship 2017 IDC Hungary 2017 National Dobermann Championship 2018 AIAD 2018 USA United Dobermann Club In addition, I have, on several occasions, judged in Germany, Austria and Hungary, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, Indonesia, France, the Czech Republic, Serbia and Greece. I have been active in breeding, showing, and training Dobermans for more than 40 years. In that time I have bred over 40 Champions under the KANSA kennel name with the vast majori- ty of them OWNER HANDLED. We have bred multiple Top 20 conformation and obedience competitors, ROMS, WACs, and the 1987 DPCA Top Brood Bitch. We have also bred and ti- tled multiple dogs in working sports. We have built our breeding program on conformation, health, correct Doberman temperament, and working ability. My job and multiple judging opportunities have afforded me the privilege of observing superior Doberman specimens all around the world. We have incorporated dogs from North and South America, the UK, and continental Europe into our breeding program. We feel this has strengthened our breeding pro- gram, and the breed in the process. I have judged large Doberman(n) specialties on five continents and have learned to appreciate all types and styles of our great breed. I have observed numerous national/world level Dobermann specialties, ZTPs, and working trials across Europe that have given me a multi-faceted perspective with this breed. I would like to say

“Thank You” to all of the exhibitors for your entry.

Jacqueline Matson Judge: AKC and UDC Conformation, UDC Temperament Test

6721. N. Seneca Wichita, KS 637204

I am a fourth-generation dog breeder in the US, England, and Ireland. I was literally born into dog breeding. My mother bred top winning Pembroke Welsh Corgi’s and my grandmoth- er bred American Cocker Spaniels. Growing up, I had always admired the stately Doberman, but was not exposed to them up close and personal until I met Doug, my husband, 25 years ago. I fell in love with him and the breed. Doug already had an established Doberman pro- gram, but I believe that I have enhanced Kansa Dobermans and learned much about the breed as well as contributing to it. I have handled our own dogs in the show ring and on the working field. I have been a local club officer and show and/ or trial secretary many times. I know what it takes to put on successful dog events and have a successful dog club. As you all know, these are the perfect dogs, with their clean sharp appearance, athletic agility, superior intelligence, and willing- ness to partner with you. We breed DOBERMANS. Not American Dobermans; not European Dobermanns; not Show Dobermans; and not Working Dobermans. This is one breed with many facets that should all be developed and supported. Excellent Dobermans can be found all over the world and we have not limited ourselves to any particular bloodline or country. We should strive for dogs with proper conformational structure and a mind and character that make them capa- ble of performing at the highest levels in the show ring, on the agility course, on the working sport field, or in military/police work. This may be the age of specialization but concentrating on one aspect of our breed to the exclusion of others or disre- specting those that choose other venues only polarizes the Doberman fancy and ultimately will be the downfall of our breed. Having a dog that can walk out of the show ring and right on to the performance or working field is like driving a Ferrari when you have only driven a sedan. I love this breed and support all of the facets of it: looks, personality, and ca- pabilities.

Pat Murphy (Cornelius), Esq. WAE Evaluator

36227 80th Street East Little Rock, CA 93543

I have been involved with training dogs for over 40 years, and with Dobermans for over 30 years, both in the performance sports and in the conformation ring. I have trained and trialed dogs of various breeds including Dobermans, Belgian Ter- vuren, Malinois, German Shepherds, , and Beauceron in Schutzhund, French Ring, Obedience, tracking, and the then fledgling sport of agility, and have had the good fortune to work with some of the top dog trainers from Europe and the US. With my professional handler husband I also had the pleasure of travelling all over the US showing dogs of all breeds in conformation shows until he retired. I did limited breeding under the kennel name Tasmin.

I attended the “meeting in Chicago” and thus was one of the founding members of the United Doberman Club. I also was a founding member of the North American Ring Association. I was involved in helping to introduce French Ring Sport to North America and was happy to assist in certifying decoys at the inception of the sport in this country with my Ring III Ter- vuren, Mick.

As I was never accused of being shy about expressing my views, I was asked, over the years, to serve on various Boards of Directors and as Officers of a number of dog organizations including the North American Ring Association and its prede- cessor organization the Alliance for the French Ring in America (President, Vice President, director), the Western KG Board of DVG America, Inc. (regional representative), the United Doberman Club (Charter Board Member), the Los Angeles Dober- man Pinscher Club (Corresponding Secretary), as well as local training clubs, obedience clubs, and all-breed groups. I served the DPCA as Chapter Club Secretary (when it was still called that), Recording Secretary, and also stood in as Corre- sponding Secretary to assist Vic Monteleone when he held that position, as well as serving as a director for a number of years. I served as an informal “advisor” to several DPCA presidents, and also served as Grievance Chair for the DPCA, as well as Chair of the Working Dog Committee. I also served as the Trial Secretary for the Working Dog Event at a number of DPCA nationals starting in Fitchburg and for the last time in Pomona, California. I have lectured to various training clubs and professional handler groups on issues related to dogs and the law as well as dog behavior and training.

Though a lawyer by trade, I have been a “student” of animal behavior since I was in my teens, reading every book on the subject that I could get my hands on (and being fortunate to basically start doing this at the same time that animal “ethology” was really taking hold, in the 60’s), as well as taking every opportunity to attend lectures, talk to trainers and experts, and simply observe. I don’t only work with predators, but also prey, as I have had a fascination and love for hors- es all my life. I have also had the good fortune to be friends with one of the top big cat trainers in the country and consider every day to be another opportunity to observe, listen and learn. I try to share my enthusiasm for observing and learning about animal behavior at every WAE that I am asked to judge.

Linda Calamia 17556,Calle Del Corral, Riverside, CA 92504

UDC Breed Survey Judge

I purchased my first Doberman in 1971. I wanted a family dog with protective capabilities. My husband Phillip worked nights and we had 2 young children.

I enrolled Kaiser in a basic obedience course. Thus, began my education into the world of dogs. Kaiser obtained his AKC Utility Dog degree and loved scent hurdle racing. While attending local dog shows/trials I was exposed to the beautiful dogs in the conformation ring and decided to set my sights higher. My second Doberman, Schon was the pretty, elegant . Kaiser was the clever family protector. Why couldn’t I find both traits in one dog? I fin- ished two more dogs, Isa and Major, to their AKC championships but again the correct temperament was missing.

My husband loved to travel and in 1986 we made plans to attend some Doberman events and visit some breeders. I learned about the German breeding system whereby the total dog must be considered in breeding plans. I attended some ZTP’s, which are a breeding prerequisite in Germany, some conformation shows and schutzhund trials. I was impressed, and our first German import Amida, from the Norden Stamm kennel, arrived in November 1986. Amida was a VDH champion, schutzhund III, and is the foundation bitch for Adlercrest Dobermanns, and we can’t thank Jens and Alison Kollenberg enough for their generosity and trust in us. We kept a red male, Danzig, from the Ebo/Amida litter. He was the first dog that I trained in the sport of schutzhund. He earned his SchH III, CD, WAE and his FCI CH. and Mexican and SKC CH. I have gone on to train 17 home bred dogs to schutzhund titles. I discovered that I would much rather be out training and trialing my dog than sending them off with a handler to obtain the AKC championship. I did send Armin, another import, off to finish his CH. because I got tired of the show people referring to “working dogs” as ugly. I wanted to prove that a working dog could compete and win in the show ring. He also won his classes at the FCI World Show and the National Portuguese Doberman Specialty.

I advocated for and drew up the format for the UDC Breed Survey. It has been designed to mirror the basic concept of the German ZTP with a few modifications regarding health testing and the written standard. It offers a grading system for evaluating breeding stock for both trained and untrained dogs.
