Leading Irish jazz drummer Kevin Brady releases new album entitled ‘Zeitgeist’ featuring U.S. pianist Bill Carrothers on May 16th with the prestigious jazz label ‘Fresh Sounds New Talent’. Irish jazz drummer Kevin Brady continues his collaboration with the innovative U.S. pianist/composer Bill Carrothers. Brady has many years of experience playing with some of lreland's most prominent jazz trios including Organics and the Phil Ware Trio. ‘ Brady has been one of the most dynamic forces in the Irish jazz scene today’ Sunday Tribune. Bill Carrothers is quite exceptional in this setting, having recorded with many Internationally acclaimed groups. Recording with luminaries such as Gary Peacock, Bill Stewart, Drew Gress, Marc Copland.. “Carrothers' a relentlessly inventive pianist with harmonic sophistication has to be heard to be believed."     ABSTRACT Title: FRENCH STEWARDSHIP OF JAZZ: THE CASE OF FRANCE MUSIQUE AND FRANCE CULTURE Roscoe Seldon Suddarth, Master of Arts, 2008 Directed By: Richard G. King, Associate Professor, Musicology, School of Music The French treat jazz as “high art,” as their state radio stations France Musique and France Culture demonstrate. Jazz came to France in World War I with the US army, and became fashionable in the 1920s—treated as exotic African- American folklore. However, when France developed its own jazz players, notably Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, jazz became accepted as a universal art. Two well-born Frenchmen, Hugues Panassié and Charles Delaunay, embraced jazz and propagated it through the Hot Club de France. After World War II, several highly educated commentators insured that jazz was taken seriously. French radio jazz gradually acquired the support of the French government. This thesis describes the major jazz programs of France Musique and France Culture, particularly the daily programs of Alain Gerber and Arnaud Merlin, and demonstrates how these programs display connoisseurship, erudition, thoroughness, critical insight, and dedication. France takes its “stewardship” of jazz seriously.     Peter Herbert Born Leap Day of 1960 in Bludenz, Austria Bassist Peter Herbert has been living in Paris since 2003 (in New York from 1989- 2003) and leads a busy schedule with an average of 100 concerts annually performing throughout the world. Trained as a classical pianist/bassist, after years of successful 'main stream' jazz activities, he is now developing his own voice in the field of improvised music. Recent activities include solo concerts, in 2002 in New York (Glassfarm), London (The Vortex), Oman, Jerusalem, Vienna (Porgy&Bess), a.m.o. (Cd: 'bassooka' - music for, AZM 1003) and a focus on small ensembles like his duos with David Tronzo (CD: Segmente, AZM 1001), Carol Robinson (bass-clarinette/electronics) or his Parisian Trio with Chris Culpo (p) and Jean-Charles Richard (sax). He is also involved in arabic music with artists like oud-master Marcel Khalife or Simon Shaheen, Youssef el Idrissi a.o. Herbert is also a prolific and versatile composer, mostly commissioned by European orchestras and ensembles. He has written for orchestras, choirs and chamber groups, designed experimental movie soundtracks and incidental music for European avant-garde theatre groups (Cd:Aktionstheater Ensemble 2000 music for theater, AZM 102). As a Jazz musician, he has worked with many artists and groups such as the John Abercrombie/Marc Copland Quartet, Bobby Previte's "The Horse", Vienna Art Orchestra, John Clark Octet, Art Farmer and Woody Shaw. Herbert was recently awarded the Hans Koller-prize as 'musician of the year' This prize is given to a jury chosen person, who had 'significant impact on the Austrian music scene for a long time'.
