Conclusion This research aims to answer the question about how are the changing images of Miley Cyrus represented in her official music videos and what triggers Miley Cyrus to change her image to stay popular. From the analysis of the music video, the changing images of Miley Cyrus are delivered clearly, through the depiction elements of the music videos such as images, narration and lyrics. There are also some elements such as costume, make-up, lighting, and setting that also support the representation of the music video. The six music videos from Miley Cyrus entitled, 7 Things, The Climb, When I Look At You, Can’t Be Tamed, We Can’t Stop and Wrecking Ball are not only giving a brief explanation about Cyrus’s changing images, but also giving clear explanation about what triggers her to change her images to stay popular. From the first music video entitled “7 Things” which was released in 2008, the narration of the music video, lyrics and song represent that Cyrus is a cheerful and optimistic girl. The second video entitled “The Climb” which was released in 2009 represents Cyrus as an ordinary country girl and a girl with strong ambition. The third video entitled “When I Look At You” which was released in 2010 represents Cyrus as a pure & innocent and dependent young woman. The massive ship departed from Southampton, England, for New York, New York, at around noon that day. But unbeknownst to everyone at the time, it would never reach its final destination. The Titanic, one of the greatest luxury liners of the time, was owned by The White Star line, one of the largest ocean liner companies in the world. The Titanic was seen as unsinkable, so much so that it earned the nicknamed “The Ship that God Could Not Sink.”1 It had the finest features, the newest advancements of the time, and the best luxuries.

Veronica Gyring Kval http://www.duo.uio.no/ Trykk: Reprosentralen, Universitetet i Oslo IV Summary This masters thesis focuses on constructed identities, with its main focus being Miley Cyrus. The topic of constructed identities is relevant in the field of popular musicology, as well as in other fields of research within the humanities. My primary thesis question is: How is Miley Cyrus constructed and how can she be understood through audiovisual readings of four of her music videos? In this thesis I discuss previous research done within this field, by scholars such as McClary, Butler, Hawkins and Scott, to name a few. My primary method for this thesis is audiovisual analysis, and I apply this method to four selected music videos. My findings base themselves on my own readings, and are presented in schematics, as well as in the discussion. Here I categorise the findings in four chapters; “Identity”, “Videos”, “To be a pop star; all you need to change is who you are” and “Pop Constructions: Why they matter”. Here I have determined that Miley Cyrus, through the course of the four analysed music videos, possesses two constructed pop identities.
