American Women and the Veteranist-Commemoration of the First World War, 1917-1945 ABSTRACT Title of Document: CARRY ON: AMERICAN WOMEN AND THE VETERANIST-COMMEMORATION OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR, 1917-1945 Allison Sarah Finkelstein, Ph.D., 2015 Directed By: Associate Professor Saverio Giovacchini, Department of History The commemoration of the First World War deeply impacted American culture between 1917 and 1945, and incited a contentious debate about the best forms of military memorialization. All kinds of American women participated in commemorations alongside men, the government, veterans, and the military. Even more frequently, they took part in predominantly female memorialization projects, many of which aided veterans. Organizations composed of American women who believed they served or sacrificed during the First World War defined community service and veterans advocacy as forms of commemoration that they pursued in addition to, or sometimes instead of, more permanent forms of commemoration. In keeping with women’s contributions to the war effort and their Progressive era service and reform activities, many American women pursued service-based commemorative projects to serve the nation in ways normally prohibited to them because of gender-based restrictions on their citizenship. This dissertation investigates how American women who served during the First World War commemorated the conflict during the interwar period and through the end of World War Two. It employs the term “veteranist-commemorations” to describe the service-based memorialization projects these women advocated, and designates these women as female “veteranist-commemorators.” Rejecting traditional monuments, female veteranist-commemorators placed the plight of male and female veterans at the center of their memorialization efforts. Women’s veteranist- commemorations did not solely address veterans of strictly defined military service, but included anyone who sacrificed during the war. Female veteranist-commemorators pioneered a new form of commemoration that revolutionized American memorial practices. Their actions forced Americans to re- think their commemorative practices and provided a new way to conceptualize the definition of a memorial. Through their outspoken support of veteranist- commemorations, these women promoted a type of commemoration that included intangible actions, human bodies, and ephemeral activities as crucial, defined parts of the memorialization process. In doing so, female veteranist-commemorators changed the course of American military commemoration, even though their memorialization methods did not gain as widespread acceptance as they hoped. It has always been popular throughout our Nation’s short history to take wars and somehow, for posterity sake, condense them down into some catchy title and memorable synopsis. World War I was known as "The War to End All Wars". It wasn't! Twenty-three years after the Doughboys returned home a new generation of Americans was confronted with the likes of Normandy, Guadalcanal, and Iwo Jima.

    6 Women and the war The Great War, most people would have agreed at the time, was a male cre- ation. Politicians, statesmen and kings bred it and soldiers fought and fed it. Thus far, this study has regarded those women within Bloomsbury whose aes- thetic reactions to the conflict provide such a good starting point when examin- ing the war in this context. What of other women, existing independently from that hot-house of creativity, but who felt similarly? Due to their status in soci- ety as a whole, women necessarily operated within a different cultural milieu to that of men – even when sharing an enlightened, liberal background with them, as within Bloomsbury and its circle. But women emerged from a range of back- grounds and contexts – including that of political agitation linked to specific political aims – whose motivation towards protest, when confronted by the specifics of war, became more individualistic in character and less a part of an organised ‘movement’ or liable to be led by the propaganda of the war-state. Many women in the period leading up to the outbreak of the conflict could lay claim to a history of opposition; during the pre-war period one of the prin- cipal focal points of public dissent against the existing political structure had been the women’s suffrage movement. This cause, by the nature of its specific political goals, had also been largely political in organisation, character and aspiration, though precepts of greater equality for women outside the political sphere – once they had achieved the vote – were meshed to hopes for the ulti- mate cultural emancipation of the female sex.

However, when US explorer, Hiram Bingham, announced that he had discovered the “lost city” in 1911, few would have predicted Machu Picchu’s rise to fame during the twentieth century. My dissertation traces the unlikely transformation of Machu Picchu into its present-day role as a modern tourism destination and a representation of Peruvian national identity.

  • Of Australia's First Woman Sculptor and Her War Memorials
    In Memoriam: World War I memorials by the Australian sculptor Margaret Baskerville (1861-1930). Margaret A. Rose, FAHA, FRHistS Margaret Francis Ellen (“Nell”) Baskerville was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1861 and was one of the first Australian-born women artists to become a professional sculptor. This brief illustrated account of her war memorials is based on my study of her work and that of her husband and fellow sculptor C. Douglas Richardson, which was published for the Brighton (now Bayside) City Council collection of their paintings and sculpture under the title Victorian Artists. Margaret Baskerville (1861-1930) and C. Douglas Richardson (1853-1932) in 1988. Several memorials to the fallen were commissioned and completed by sculptors as well as by stonemasons in Australia in the aftermath of the “Great War”. Many are recorded, and some are illustrated, in the numerous editions of Sacred Places: War Memorials in the Australian Landscape by K.S. Inglis, assisted by Jan Brazier, of 1998, as well as – more recently – on websites such as those for the “Monument Australia” and “Victorian Heritage” databases. As Inglis has noted, the majority of the war memorials unveiled in the public spaces of Australian towns following World War I had been for – and had illustrated – the male soldiers who had fought and fallen in battle. Amongst the memorials built and unveiled following World War I were, however, also two by the Australian sculptor Margaret Baskerville (1861-1930) for the British nurse Edith Louisa Cavell. Cavell (born in Norfolk, England in 1865) had trained as a nurse in London under a friend of Florence Nightingale (Matron Eva Luckes), had taken up work in Belgium and been executed there at dawn on 12 October 1915 by order of the German Military Governor of Brussels for having assisted in the escape of allied soldiers, and despite the fact that she had tended the wounded of both sides.

In fact, artists’ contributions were also engaged at an applied level, in the areas of propaganda, camouflage, map-making and many other trades. Beyond this, a small number actively participated as artists in repairing the damage caused by the conflict. Frederick Coates, a British-born sculptor who emigrated to Canada in 1913, was one of these artists. After enlisting with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he worked for three years alongside surgeons and other artists in England to try and help give new features to facially injured combatants.
