GEOLOGY BIBLIOGRAPHY OF MONTEREY COUNTY, CALIFORNIA 1854–2000 Version 1.0 PREPARED FOR THE MONTEREY COUNTY 21ST CENTURY GENERAL PLAN UPDATE PROGRAM Submitted to: County of Monterey Environmental Resource Policy Department 240 Church Street, Room 301 Salinas, California 93902 Compiled by: Lew Rosenberg, Consulting Geologist Calif. License EG–1777 P.O. Box 183 Templeton, California 93465 August 2000 Geology Bibliography of Monterey County August 2000 Version 1.0 Introduction and Data Sources: One of the goals of the County of Monterey’s 21st Century General Plan Update is to have the most complete data available for planning and policy decisions. In support of this goal, the following list of approximately 4,300 references was compiled from a variety of sources. The scope of this database is much broader in scope than the original list of consultant reports submitted to Monterey County governmental agencies and includes extensive references on regional geologic mapping, hydrogeology, economic geology, and research done in connection with the Parkfield Earthquake Prediction Experiment. Major sources of information include: • Monterey County Planning Department: a database of approximately 2,000 references within the categories of geology, soil, water resources, and water quality. • Monterey County Water Resources Agency. • Monterey Peninsula Water Management District. • The American Geological Institute’s GeoRef database. • The U.S. Geological Survey’s National Geologic Map Database. • An online bibliography of research conducted in the northern Santa Lucia Mountains, Big Sur, and surrounding area published for the Santa Lucia Natural History Symposium (sponsored by Esalen Institute and University of California Big Creek Reserve, 1994–1997). • Library catalogs of the U.S. Geological Survey, University of California, California State University, Stanford University, and the California Institute of Technology. Methods and Limitations: References from the various data sources were compiled into a master list. Most duplicate entries in the list were culled and the remaining entries were edited for consistency. However, less than one-quarter of the original documents referenced were actually reviewed. Therefore, many of the referenced citations are incomplete, especially unpublished reports from the Monterey County Planning Department and should be regarded as provisional. Much of the material in the bibliography is “gray” literature, which is unpublished and not always readily available. Nevertheless, the database should be useful for planners, geologists, and the public. This bibliography exists in three formats: (1) a printed copy, (2) a digital version in PDF format, and (3) a digital database in Microsoft Access 2000 format. The PDF version is searchable by keyword using software such as Adobe Acrobat Reader (available at no cost from Adobe, Inc. on the Internet at www.adobe.com). The database contains additional fields such as Monterey County Planning Department file numbers and is intended mainly for the Monterey County Planning Department. This bibliography may be freely reproduced, but not sold without written permission from the County of Monterey. Requests for copies of the bibliography should be directed to: County of Monterey Environmental Resource Policy Department 240 Church Street, Room 301 Salinas, California 93902 The data for this is current as of April 2000 and is denoted as Version 1.0. Future minor revisions will be denoted by the increase of the numeral after the decimal, while large changes will be denoted by increasing the numeral before the decimal. A list of the revisions will be included with the updated bibliography. - i - Geology Bibliography of Monterey County August 2000 Version 1.0 A ABA Consultants, 1986, Elkhorn Slough Wetlands Management Plan—preliminary draft report, water quality, sedimentation and erosion ABA Consultants and Haro, Kasunich & Assoc, 1992, Proposed Moss Landing Marine Laboratories Adams, E.W., and Beatty, W.B., 1962, Bituminous rocks in California: Mineral Information Service, v. 15, no. 4, p. 1–9.
