As a Specialist Academy for Performing Arts, we provide many opportunities throughout the year in dance, drama and music. We have a fine tradition of outstanding school productions, dance shows and music concerts. We also offer chances for students to perform outside of school, in a variety of different settings. The school has an excellent record of team sports and we have won several football trophies in recent times. We have also had numerous champions in other sporting arenas such as tennis, athletics and golf. Our students have had success in art, writing and engineering competitions and we have worked with the Anne Frank Trust for a number of years. We encourage all children to take part, lead active and healthy lifestyles, and strive to be participants and winners. The Duke of Edinburgh Award is highly popular and is offered to all year nine students at Bronze Award level and to students who wish to pursue their award in year ten. By taking children out of school on well-focused and well-planned school visits, we can truly enhance their learning inside the classroom. During recent years, we have visited a range of local, national and international destinations, including South Africa, France, Spain, Holland, Iceland and China. Working with others in the community can take many forms and can be incredibly rewarding and valuable for every child who joins in. We like to encourage our students to take part in charity work, fundraising initiatives and other community-based activities, in preparation for their future as active and responsible citizens. Preparing for the future Maghull High School is committed to offering students the opportunity to develop their own leadership abilities. Our student leadership programme supports students in developing skills that they can apply both inside and outside of education. Led by our Head Boy and Head Girl, the prefects and student council representatives are instrumental in ensuring an active student voice within the school that has real impact. Outside of this programme there are other opportunities for students, for example, as literacy champions, peer mentors, digital champions and sports leaders, among others. Our comprehensive careers advice, information, education and guidance programme starts in year seven and affords students many opportunities to meet employers and visit workplaces, colleges and universities.     Maghull High School Joining The Southport Learning Trust – DFE Case Study (February 2021) All to: Aspire, Achieve, Enjoy Introduction Maghull High School is an oversubscribed average sized 11-18 comprehensive school with over 950 students on roll. The large majority of students are White British, with very small numbers of European, African, Asian and mixed heritage students. The school site is in Maghull; however, the school draws students from a wide and socio-economically highly diverse catchment from over 40 primary schools. Over 480 students live outside Sefton in four other local authorities, mainly in North Liverpool and Knowsley. A high proportion of students travel to school by public transport. 6% of the school population live within a 1-mile radius of the school. Attainment at entry is in line with national average. The percentage of disadvantaged students is slightly above the figure for other schools nationally. Retention in sixth form is positive, the majority of Year 11 students progress into our sixth form. Challenges of being a Single Academy Trust (SAT) Being a single academy trust can present a number of challenges. Sometimes you can feel quite isolated and vulnerable as a SAT; particularly SAT that ‘Requires Improvement’. The development, challenge and improvement in some areas of leadership and student outcomes can lack pace and rigour. SATs can lack critical friends and support and it can be difficult and expensive to source reliable and appropriate external support and expertise for key priority development areas. It can also be difficult to attract and recruit in subject shortage areas. As a SAT you have reduced bargaining and purchasing power and is difficult to achieve economies of scale.

It forms part of the Lydiate Learning Trust, with Deyes High School as lead school in the partnership for the secondary phase. There is currently no lead school for the primary phase. Within the partnership, there are 13 secondary schools across four local authorities, and 12 primary schools all within the same local authority. In addition, there are two all-through schools catering for pupils in the three-to-19 age range across two local authorities.

It has been compiled to help you to discover Sefton’s fascinating history and wonderful flora and fauna. Walking or cycling through Sefton will also help to improve your health and fitness. With its wide range of accommodation to suit all budgets, Southport makes a very convenient base. So make the most of your visit; stay over one or two nights and take in some of the easy, family-friendly walks, detailed in this guide. Why not ‘warm-up’ by walking along Lord Street with its shops and cafés and then head for the promenade and gardens alongside the Marine Lake. Or take in the sea air with a stroll along the boardwalk of Southport Pier before walking along the sea wall of Marine Drive to the Queen’s Jubilee Nature Trail or the new Eco Centre nearby. All the trails and walks are clearly signposted and suitable for all ages and abilities. However, as with all outdoor activities, please take sensible precautions against our unpredictable weather and pack waterproof clothing and wear suitable shoes. Don’t forget your sun cream during the Summer months. If cycling, make sure that your bike is properly maintained and wear a protective helmet at all times. It's also a good idea to include some food and drink in a small day-pack, as although re-fuelling stops are suggested on the listed routes, there is no guarantee that they will be open when you need them.

    SCHOOLS REGULATORY SERVICES DETERMINED SCHEME FOR CO-ORDINATION OF ADMISSIONS TO SEFTON SECONDARY SCHOOLS 2017 The scheme set out below seeks to comply with the requirements of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998, as later amended and the School Admissions Code 2014 and any further updates, in respect of co-ordinated admissions schemes. The Local Authority scheme for coordination of admissions will come into force for admission applications submitted from September 2016 for the admission of pupils transferring from primary to Secondary school in September 2017. Children transfer from primary to secondary schools in the September following their eleventh birthday. The Education and Skills Act 2008 increased the minimum age at which young people in England can leave learning, thus requiring them to continue in education or training to the age of 18. All 11 year olds starting secondary education in September 2017 will continue their learning in Education and or training until the age of 18. Sefton Local Authority has a statutory duty to co-ordinate the primary to secondary transfer process for admissions to Secondary Schools within Sefton. In addition to the statutory co- ordination role, the Local Authority is the Admissions Authority for Community Secondary Schools in the Borough. This means the Admissions Criteria for those schools is set by the Local Authority. Sefton Local Authority administers an Equal Preference Admissions Scheme. This means that each individual preference (school) listed on the Local Authority application form will be considered equally according to each individual school’s admissions criteria. If a place can be offered at more than one of the preferences listed on the application form, then the Local Authority will automatically offer the highest preferred school.
