To impart skills and holistic education so every individual can become self-reliant, there would no need of asking for help if our youth themselves are equipped with the skill to earn their living.

I have opened two centers in Delhi (Dwarka & Janakpuri) in July 2017 to educate underprivileged children and provide skill training to youth/women. We conducted regular classes at our center and awareness campaigns in the community to mobilize children. More than 200 children got benefited by my initiatives. All financial contributions are made by my salary only (I am working in a company) it was around 4 lac to run these centers. We trained these children in dance, singing, painting etc. and brought opportunities for them to showcase their talents, they have performed in many college fest (Ramanujan College, PGDAV College, Jamia University), competitions, NAVOUDIT KIDS CARNIVAL at PGDAV College where they won 2nd prize in dance, 1st prize in debate & many more prizes.

I made computer lab at the center by my own (In the early age I was a child laborer and learnt carpentry work) bought computers and printers to start computer training classes.

Indian Periodical Magazine featured my story in their article Person of the week. http://indianperiodical.com/2018/04/person-of-the-week-rambabu-sharma/

Guiding principle behind everything is my journey itself, I belongs to very disadvantaged family & to fulfill the needs I count get chance for proper schooling and started working in a factory at the age of 12-13 years. I had a strong desire to help children struggling with the same situation what I was facing then I realized that there is only way i.e. to get educated. Finally, I appeared in 10th exam at the age of 20 and managed to study along with job. Secured 9th rank in IP University engineering entrance exam and got into engineering, completed with help of scholarship now I am working at German Company. Ms Tirtha Prasad Saikia works to provide emergency response and towards disaster management practices in the communities of upper Brahmaputra. “Training proves to be key ingredient in handling any disaster”, he has been volunteering for emergency in the flood prone areas of upper Assam. He is committed to promote disaster preparedness in the communities to ensure justice & dignity towards people in maintaining natural resources. “We cannot stop natural disaster but we can definitely arm ourselves with knowledge, a competent disaster preparedness plan can save many lives.”

“The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.” – Oscar Wilde.

Since my childhood days, I had been witnessing people of my land Assam suffering in widespread humanitarian crisis of flood and river erosion. People were affected by the massive inundation in all aspects of life and livelihood into a significant amount, which rendered them every time homeless, also destroyed their agriculture in the land. Many a time’s I remember flood victims taking temporary shelters in our schools and thus living difficult lives where we were pursuing our formal education.

I was very much depressed looking at such poor people’s struggle in my village in such hazardous catastrophe many a times. I was always one of the frontliner with my friends in reaching out to those vulnerable and disaster hit people for sharing our deepest sympathy. As students we were enthusiastic and keen to provide help with our own mobilised local resources to the needy people and that was what gave me joy at the time.

Consequently my journey of volunteerism started into action. After joining North-East Affected Area Development Society (NEADS), a grassoot development organisation based in Jorhat of Assam, I am in this mission now to make difference of lives of poor people in their struggle against humanitarian crisis, exploitation & poverty in Assam. It was my passion always to be a good humanitarian activist with volunteerism spirit to support the lives of others. I never thought that humanitarian work with the affected would shape my profession in the later course of time. Every time I visit people in the field and come across heartbreaking stories of life from and inspiring realities which always motivate me with new energy.

I am extensively engaged with my efforts in institutionalizing the flood and river bank erosion risk-prone communities living in the flood prone areas of Upper Assam region. I am committed to the cause of promoting and defending disaster affected communities rights where people live their life with dignity, find scope to enhance their sustainable management systems on their lands, water and resources. I have been working with the flood affected community in a number of floodplain regions of upper Brahmaputra basin to prevent, mitigate and prepare for disasters and helping them to address the risks of flood and its consequences.

His educational qualifications includes, graduation in Political Science Honours from Baba Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Muzzafarpur and Diploma in Hardware Networking and Security Management from IACM , South Extension, New Delhi. Mr. Shrivastava is the Chairman of the Global Youth Peace Committee.

“Volunteering is the contribution made by one's own will to the prosperity and development of society”

The purpose of my volunteering is to work for the convenience of the underprivileged and bring them into the mainstream of the country and to build a strong and inclusive peaceful sustainable development in society.

Interested in society and social work since childhood, there has always been a desire to do something good for society. In August of 2017, a new turning point occurred in my life, which strengthened my loyalty to the people of the society. Almost the entire north Bihar was hit by floods. I was here only in Delhi those days. My home and village as well as the entire Tiruah area of East Champaran district was facing the floods. Unable to make contact at home, mother and father were alone at home. Due to lack of contact, the mind was troubled and was getting distracted by the government and voluntary organizations were engaged in flood relief work. But, the apathetic attitude of the government was causing trouble. I started a campaign to work on our Banjariya block level formed a team with my friends and local bureaucrats, and then started flood relief work. Hundreds of people joined and then donations were collected. People were appealed to donate for relief work. Pressure was also placed on the officials of the administration to help in timely relief work. I was doing all this work sitting thousands of miles away from my city.

I also appealed to the people of my office; they also provided funds to contribute to the work of flood relief. When the amount was going to work, I stood at the India Gate in Delhi and raised the funds for the flood relief work. Slowly the river showed its humility and the water started working, then the phase of diseases started, the floods were flooded, Khasi, Dasta, Infaxon and hundreds of illnesses left, the roads made for traffic were broken due to water, Traffic was badly constrained, then we started organizing health camps. We put constant pressure on the health department of the state to provide necessary medicines for the health improvement of more than 2000 people. I believe that voluntary service can be done even after staying away, if you have a strong will and passion to do something good and you really want to contribute to the inclusive development of not only society but your country.

In the year 2019, I set up a Global Youth Peace Committee (GYPC) in Sirsa, Haryana, in July 2019, to connect it with government and corporate people around the world, to expand the scope of my self-service and meet the goal of sustainable development. Formed. The first International Youth Development Conference was held in which participants from nearly 22 decades participated. On 2 October 2014, the Government of South Delhi organized the Global Fair for Global Environment and Peace with about 40 volunteer institutions with a positive impact on the global environment. Let us tell you; today the Global Peace Committee is reducing caste in about 35 countries all over the world.

On 14 August 2019, Beach Please volunteers celebrated their 101st week of the clean-up drive of Dadar sea beach in Southern Mumbai. Malhar Anil Kalambe, a 21 year old Charted Accountant aspirant, who had inspired the youths of Mumbai to clean the beach, had twitted "The world was a clean place until we polluted it. Now, the world will remain dirty until we clean it!" He was concerned about the single-use plastics littered irresponsibly by the tourists visiting the beach. During the process of cleaning up, Malhar and his friends realized that the littering of single used plastic by the tourist is not the major source of Dadar beach pollution. The major source of pollution is the Mithi River or what is locally known as Mahim River. The river is clogged with domestic as well as industrial waste that needed to be cleaned as well. He took initiative to clean up the river as well. According to the newspaper and visual media sources, the team has cleaned about 16 lakh kilograms of garbage from the Dadar sea beach so far. From where did he get his motivation? Nature was the motivating factor. The pristine, un-savaged, non-littered and exquisite sea beach of Bali, which is frequented by the Indian as well as world tourists that he had visited three years ago, changed his perspective on nature. After coming back from Bali he started his journey as an environment volunteer. He did not heave a sigh rather with gusto started the clean-up drive and motivated his friends to take upon themselves to cleaning the beach. Thus began the Beach Please movement in Mumbai on 10 September 2017. The endeavour not only received national recognition but Malhar has been awarded as a volunteer for change by the United Nations India. What is his future plan? He is disturbed by the fact that the common people are acting irresponsibly. He wants to sensitise them for which he has coined the motivational slogan “I have cleaned my bit, have you?” and trying to propagate the idea. Malhar loves the idea of a beach: the sound of waves crashing on the shore, the smell of the sea breeze, the feel of soft sand crumbling beneath as he walks along the shore line, the refreshing calmness it dawns upon him. So it is only natural for him to feel irritated upon seeing a beach violated with plastic bottles and fast- food wrappers.

With the support of his parents, Malhar started the Beach Plastic initiative along with his classmates in 2017 and now runs weekly clean-up drives at various beaches of Mumbai. Since its inception, the initiative has reached and engaged more than 10,000 volunteers and has collected and safely disposed more than 500 tonnes of garzbage in 58 weeks.

Cleaning beaches especially during the festive season of Ganesh Chaturters associated with him have restored and gifted 18 idols which are now installed across various temples of Mumbai.

His financial condition wasn’t good enough, but that was not something to stop him from doing what he wanted to. In his 11th standard, Umesh gathered a group of students and started youth leadership. With his oratory and leading skills, he became the leader of a bunch of youths in his district. This was just a beginning.

The lack of leadership in current youths and the need of society made a Youth Icon. Umesh went on to join the National Service Scheme and with this began his journey to the path of social activities. He soon got selected for many state and national level camps and programs, all thanks to his growing leadership skills. His transformational talks and speeches helped him do many social campaigns making people aware of the prevailing social evils in the society. Not only this but also extracurricular activities like essay writing, debate, speech, slogan, painting, etc. were Umesh’s hobbies.

Umesh’s work might seem easy from the outset, but actually, it was not as such. Apart from belonging to a poor background and starting from scratch, he also found that the present day youth is difficult to indulge in social work. The mentality of people has changed, and it is not easy these days to attract people towards works related to the environment like climate change, etc. He had a task in his hands which he achieved successfully, all thanks to his hard work and commitment.

When Umesh attended his life's first orientation program as a participant, he saw the anchor being unable to control the gathering. The crowd was getting uncontrollable, and the situation was getting worse. In this circumstance, Umesh got up and took the baton of managing the students in his hands. Within minutes, he was able to control a crowd of two thousand. Later on, there were many such occasions where he did something like this.

Umesh has also worked towards creating awareness about women empowerment and human rights. He has also been an active participant in activities like Shramdaan, plantation, Soakhta pit, drain construction, etc.

Volunteerism is not just a special act of making earth a better place to live but a karma or duty that has to come with every citizen’s individual social responsibility. I derive immense satisfaction by doing my duty, be it be cleaning the heritage mastani talav lake or preventing a 100 year old tree being cut by sleeping near it. Always a believer in doing things that can inspire or enable change for the greater good as a part of our everyday lifestyle.

Instead of blaming destiny for things, I chose to use my 15 years of sleepless night shift struggle to see an opportunity of 6 hours in the daytime to offer myself to volunteering. I felt happy doing hands-on work in spite of a busy life as a Site Leader of a MNC as every week you have a variety of job inside & outside the organization which are engaging & are challenging. In this journey, I have conducted & participated in 400 Swachh Pune events, volunteered to create policy, citizens pressure groups towards new LAWW (Land, Air, Water, Waste issues), Dignity of Labor cum sanitary waste issues with SwaCH red dot campaign, dealing with vision disabled citizens issue, breaking stereotypes & prejudices through ”Human Library”, educating night school students with Tuba Foundation, speaking on Women empowerment issues to 4000+ women individually , getting 20 green schools to be aware, 7 housing societies pledging to segregate waste, conducting 15 days environment festival at city level.

I used my techno-writing skills towards Operation Green creating my first “Urban Tree Election Manifesto”, distributed it to all political parties, submitted “One Page Tree Act” to Pune Municipal Corporation.

What keeps us going is the “No strings attached open arm” invite by these groups to participate with your time or skills. Right from interacting with a 6 year kid who paint Pune Shivajinagar Railway station walls or 23 year NSS Volunteers who build check dams in remote villages or with NDRF local volunteers who rescue flood affected people, it not only gives you perspectives & challenges faced, but help empathize about a variety of causes.

In the age of Subscription based fun like Netflix & Amazons, here is an alternative to work cum fun … Welcome to world of Perpetual Volunteering.

Megha Bhatia is an energetic founder of VOIX working on children rights and raising awareness about child sexual abuse. She has completed a bachelor’s degree in law from Amity university after which she went to pursue a master’s degree in Human Rights from University College London. Megha recalls her internship with one of the NGOs during her law degree where she first encountered harrowing stories of child sexual abuse. This stimulated her to work towards this cause. The more she worked with different NGOs and organisations, the more stories she encountered. She realised that lack of awareness is one of the main reasons behind the occurrences of child sexual abuse. Children often don’t know the difference between ‘good touch’ and ‘bad touch’. Parents and teachers too find this difficult to talk about. She decided to tackle the stigma associated with sex education by striking a conversation with children. Hence the VOIX was born. VOIX started officially in 2018, but Megha has volunteered actively for different causes for a long time. VOIX’s mission is “to prevent children from becoming victim or culprit to sexual abuse” and “to empower children by imparting knowledge of good touch and bad touch”. The organisation has also worked with other organisations like Ashman Foundation, Lakshyam, Pehchaan, and Rainbow Foundation. VOIX not only raises awareness among children but also among parents and teachers. Through her programmes Megha and her volunteers introduce the concept of ‘POWER’ to children – Power to say no, to raise voice and to differentiate between good touch and bad touch. VOIX also makes sure that the content being delivered is child-friendly and culturally appropriate. Under the leadership of Megha, VOIX offers free workshops and preventive programmes for children. She has also launched a comic book to educate children about ways to identify sexual abuse and raise awareness among children. Till date, VOIX has reached More than 50 school and more than 15,000 children. The comic book launched to raise awareness of child sexual abuse is now part of school libraries in more than 8 states. With a vision to take a step further, Megha plans to empower young girls to lead change and work on social causes. She also wishes to promote co-coexistence among people from different religions, caste, culture, gender. She also aims to provide the comic book to each state and in as many schools as possible. VOIX also plans to reach about 400 schools in the coming year.

Ms. Sudha Rani works to empower youth & women in the society Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart, I have volunteered in Health and Environmental Camps in various places in Telangana State. I have been associated with the street children project for teaching classes of English, and art and games to previous street kids of Japan. Also, got the opportunity to see the mobile VAN project for slum children & make chapati’s in Elephant Village.

To present in her own words, “In the society today many unfortunate people are undergoing a lot of suffering. My aim is to give them a helping hand and create social awareness among them. I am straining my every nerve to make them self-reliant economically and this alone can help them progress in many fields. I honestly believe that self-reliant women can bring a sea change in the society. I congratulate every woman on the occasion of the World Women’s Day (March 8) and appeal to them not to get upset at trivial things and march ahead boldly for building a strong India. Another social evil is child labour. In this connection, I appeal to the powers - that - be to find ways and means to eradicate the menace of school age children working as child labour in some places. It’s also unfortunate that those who are future citizens of the country have to undergo such travails. This is quite unnatural. The mode of brinigng up of children by parents, busy lives etc. are making children feel lonely and socially irrelevant. I believe that the mother must take special care about the child to create an aim and will in his / her mind which can create a new and vibrant society. Our national becomes stronger only when women and children get actively involved.

Volunteers are not paid because they are worthless but because they are priceless

A journey from self-doubt to making others analyze their worth “Success is not final, Failure is not fatal; It is the courage to continue that counts” – Winston Churchill, after failing in 12th grade he was scared & ashamed and went to his village to escape that situation. But he was not aware of the hidden opportunity this would bring which will transform his life, living there he realized the real treasure the people of his village hold but were unable to channelize. With compassion for his land and people he started computer classes for everyone, young and old whoever needed it and within 8 months, he covered more than 200 people. Again for graduation he had to move away from his village but this did not stop him, he started working with various NGO’s, he started going to college very early to meet likeminded people and students who want to do something but lacked a platform, then he started his own group “CANDID” with motto “here hard work is more important than talent” shared his knowledge of photography, event management with them, he with his group volunteered for many events. He acted as media head for more than 3 NGO’s. But he always had a feeling to go back to his roots, he left his job and went back to his place and today he is a full time social worker, a story teller who works on people and their stories which deserve to be heard and in doing which his inner peace and happiness lies. “I always wondered why somebody doesn’t do something about all the problems that exist. Then I realized that I was also that “somebody”, then I acted and that changed my life” he says.

Born to an Indian Air Force Officer had the opportunity to travel widely through India. Post graduated from Indian Institute of Mass Communication to become a copy writer by profession but enjoyed working as a social analyst ....now a mother of 15 year old twin girls ...and lately an activist... the new designation that I have been given in the recent years. Sure enough because as a parent & a citizen I was beginning to fight for many issues especially to do with environment. This new role emerged as merely contacting authorities & sending them mails wasn't helping much. It was this frustration & desperation to correct these malfunctioning authorities in the society ... be it children's "right to play" or "illegal cutting of trees" or "disastrous waste management" or "fighting the killer air" that brought the activism & desperate need to now nurture our children with these environment related fundamentals. Now it was a matter of fighting for my children's right to breathe ....!!! #MyRightToBreathe Launched by instinct of concerned Citizens in November 2016, #MyRightToBreathe (MRTB) started as a hashtag movement for amplifying the digital presence of a common man's voice against air pollution and neglect of the environment. It has now grown into a citizens-led movement that supports the actions of the Clean Air Collective, comprising of many NGOs, civil society organisations, experts, journalists, doctors, lawyers, educationists and parents, to further mobilize active participation of other citizens’ groups, NGOs, and individuals including scientists, entrepreneurs, school children, Bollywood and other celebrities, and sportspersons united to reduce emissions causing air pollution. In 2016, no one spoke of air & it has not been easy for citizens like us to bring air into the prime agendas of the government. This year we are pushing the government to notify the 'National Clean Air Programme'. But we believe that the movement works proactively towards promoting behavior change through school-based programs, provide evidence for informed policymaking and implementation of solutions at the grassroots that will help improve overall Environmental Health in India.

I feel a part of every movement or organisation that is looking for that one step towards a better environment for us & our future generations & like to give it my best. Hope to be the change to bring the change !!!

Entry No: IVN-IVD2019IVA108 Alzubair Saiyed Gujarat

Alzubair completed M.Tech in Thermal Engineering and had secured a well-paying job of Assistant Professor. On an assignment, while visiting villages in Gujarat, Alzubair noticed that houses still relied on conventional and obsolete stoves which run on firewood to cook daily meals. Those stoves are normally located in the interiors of the house in kitchens mostly cordoned off, poorly lit and ill- ventilated. On further investigation he came across a WHO report that equated exposure to pollution from burning firewood to smoking 400 cigarettes in an hour. Not surprisingly, this poses a serious health risk especially for women and children. Solar cooker was an option but it costed around 3000-10000 which the poor, rural women can’t afford. Determined to work on the problem, Alzubair left his promising carrier, put his technical skills to work, harnessing his inner drive for social entrepreneurism. He drained his limited savings and started a campaign across villages of Gujarat, teaching women to build their own solar cookers for about rupees 50-60! Which normally would have costed at least rupees 2000 even after being subsidized. So far he has managed to train more than 2000 women in manufacturing their own solar cookers all by his own at an individual level without the support of any organization. “As an engineer, I would like to contribute in building a more sustainable, stable and equitable world by finding ways to empower marginalized communities and through transfer of skills” he says.

Mithila Malhotra was inspired by the speech “Vision 2020” of honorable ex-President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in which he had projected to build a developed India She says “I was 12-year-old then. The speech has left an indelible mark in my life and I used to ponder here and there about the visions and dreams. Reaching my college days, I started looking for developed India. Though She had made big strands in economic fields and was gaining respect for these, in social field the successes have not been replicated. So I thought we have to build developed India with freedom of want for the coming generation.” She became a part of the initiative “VIKALP” during her college days. She started to teach the slum children from the nearby areas during her leisure time. She describes it as fulfilling experience where she was able to make perceptible changes in life of children. She learnt that one doesn’t need to wait a single moment to start bringing positive change in society. She was preparing for civil services when she came across an NGO, UPAY- Underprivileged Advancement by Youth, working for the education of the underprivileged children who lack access to even the necessities of life. She joined UPAY and started teaching at one of the centers in Gurgaon. Here, along with getting the satisfaction of working to bring the desired change in society, she learnt new skills related to center operation and expansion. Thereafter, she worked for increasing the reach of UPAY to other areas that desperately needed such voluntary action. She started a new center of UPAY at Karol Bagh. From convincing the family of the children to send their kids to study to find an appropriate place to conduct the classes, everything had its inherent challenges. With indomitable will to make education reach to the streets and with the help of a dedicated team, Mithila with her team strived to resolve issues in hands. After extensive surveys, Mithila and her team were able to gain enough support of the community and conducted first class with 35 students and the numbers scaled up ever since. Currently they are serving more than 60 children. She believes India needs its youth to rise to the occasion so that we can fully reap our demographic dividend. Her contributions are aimed in the direction of making India free from illiteracy and other social malaise. She aims to take vision of Gandhiji and APJ Abdul Kalam forward to make India “Sone ki Chidiya” it had been in its ancient past.
