The tournaments from 1912 through 1922 were operated by the Iowa Athletic Council, a group of school administrators sanctioned by the IHSAA. To grow the sport, the Council held “invitational state tournaments” usually at sites connected by railroads - Ames, Iowa City, Boone, etc. The tournaments created interest but did not address issues like length of the season, number of games, eligibility, academic grade and age of the participants, etc. Thus, in 1923 the IHSAA assumed total control of the sport. For many years, basketball was the “gold standard” for the Association, generating enough revenue to offset the cost of salaries, operations, awards, and administering each of the other sports sanctioned by the IHSAA. Because of strong support from the member schools, boys’ basketball still enjoys strong public support and attracts over 10,000 participants across Iowa. Each year we make a serious effort to correct sections within this book and to make them as comprehensive as our records allow. With the help of Jared Chizek and Chris Andringa, we have corrected spellings and typos that occur with a book of this nature, as well as making the information more comprehensive.     LJWorld.com Lawrence orthopedic surgeon recalls 27 years of service to KU athletes Care given to athletes on voluntary basis make Ken Wertzberger a team MVP Kevin Anderson Dr. Ken Wertzberger, a Lawrence orthopedic surgeon, recalls working with Kansas University student athletes for 27 years during a 2010 interview. He was honored last year with the bronze Jayhawk statue by the KU Athletics Department. Recently, he decided to leave OrthoKansas after 32 years and start his own practice in Lawrence. Enlarge photo March 18, 2010 Ken Wertzberger describes his ties with Kansas University athletics as a special privilege. He grew up a couple of blocks from KU’s campus and fondly remembers accompanying his father to watch “Wilt the Stilt” Chamberlain in Allen Fieldhouse. In grade school, he was a member of the KU Football Fan club. He and other students would sit in the bowl of the football stadium. They had badges with their names on them and they got to watch a season of football games for $5. “I remember going to all of those games, and since my brother (John) played, sometimes I would go down to the locker room and get a signature or something,” he said. He followed in his brother’s footsteps and played on the 1968 team that went to the Orange Bowl. Wertzberger graduated from KU’s School of Medicine in 1973, and six years later, the orthopedic surgeon returned to Lawrence to practice with his brother. He also returned to his alma mater. For 27 years, he voluntarily took care of KU athletes, including basketball greats Danny Manning, Archie Marshall, Calvin Rayford, Mark Randall, Greg Ostertag, Jacque Vaughn, Scot Pollard, Paul Pierce, Raef LaFrentz and Nick Collison.

    Press Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Russell Luna July 6, 2021 469.524.1009 / [email protected] OU’s Webb and BU’s Butler Named Big 12 Athletes of the Year IRVING, Texas -- Oklahoma gymnast Anastasia Webb and Baylor men’s basketball player Jared Butler were named the 2020-21 Big 12 Athletes of the Year. Webb is the seventh Sooner female and third consecutive to win the accolade. Butler is the third Baylor male to win the award and first since 2014. Nominees are submitted by Big 12 institutions and selected, based on athletic performance, academic achievement and citizenship, by a media panel as well as fan voting conducted through Big12Sports.com. Webb won three individual NCAA Championships with triumphs in the vault, floor exercise and all-around. She became just the ninth gymnast in NCAA history to accomplish the feat of winning three titles in one championship. Additionally, she placed third on the balance beam and seventh on bars to lead OU to a runner-up finish. A native of Morton Grove, Illinois, Webb was named the 2021 Honda Sport Award for women’s gymnastics. She was selected as the 2021 Big 12 Co-Gymnast of the Year and was the WCGA Region 4 Gymnast of the Year. Also, she was selected as a finalist for the AAI Award. The senior won Big 12 titles in the balance beam and vault. Webb collected five All-America honors and was the only gymnast nationally to earn first-team recognition on all four events and the all-around. In 2021, she collected 33 event titles and scored four perfect 10s.
