ICA PRESENTS DONAL FOX WITH SPECIAL GUEST MAYA BEISER PIAZZOLLA TO BACH APRIL 11, 2013 (BOSTON) The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (ICA) presents composer/pianist Donal Fox with guest cellist Maya Beiser in Piazzolla to Bach on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 8 p.m., in the Barbara Lee Family Foundation Theater at the ICA (100 Northern Ave., Boston). General admission tickets for each show are $30, $15 for members and students, and can be purchased at www.icaboston.org or by calling (617) 478-3103. Admission to the museum is free on Thursdays from 5 – 9 p.m. Returning to the ICA, where he inaugurated the Barbara Lee Family Foundation Theater at the ICA with the very first public music performance there in February of 2007, Guggenheim Fellow and Steinway Artists Fox brings his Piazzolla to Bach project for solo piano and cello, with special guest Maya Beiser. Piazzolla to Bach (for jazz quartet and cello) premiered at the Tanglewood Jazz Festival in 2010. Bach had a profound influence on Piazzolla, the Argentine composer known for his tango music, and with the help of Beiser, who lists Piazzolla's music among her influences, Fox explores the relationship of the two artists. Like Piazzolla, Fox has forged a unique amalgam of jazz, Latin and classical music. Beiser discovered Piazzolla’s music when she was a little girl growing up on a Kibbutz in Israel. The Argentinian tango composer and bandoneon player was a favorite of Beiser’s Argentinian father. Acclaimed pianist, composer and improviser Donal Fox combines deep grooves with sophisticated contrapuntal lines, creating a striking musical collage that is at once stirring, visceral and intellectually satisfying. Like a great DJ digging in the crates for forgotten gems, Fox mines the rich resources of jazz and classical literature, crafting an expanding repertoire of original compositions seamlessly wedded to the undeniable pulse of Afro-Cuban jazz. His inventive blend marches boldly toward new sounds, effortlessly “confounding the genre police (Downbeat)”. Fox has recorded as composer and pianist for New World Records, Evidence Records, Music & Arts, Passin' Thru Records, Yamaha's Original Artist Series, and Wergo Records. His works are published by Margun Music, G. Schirmer, and Leonellis Music. Through an eclectic repertoire and a quest to redefine her instrument's boundaries, Maya Beiser has attracted world renown. She has commissioned and performed many works written for her by leading composers including Tan Dun, Brian Eno, Philip Glass, Osvaldo Golijov, Steve Reich, among others. Beiser has conceived of and performed in her own signature multimedia concerts including World To Come, which premiered at Zankel Hall's inaugural season; Almost Human, a collaboration with visual artist Shirin Neshat; and Provenance, which premiered at Carnegie Hall in 2008 and forms the basis of her latest recording, a top-selling classical and world music CD since its 2010 release. Highlights of Beiser's recent US tours include performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Royce Hall in LA, and the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. She was also a featured speaker/performer at the 2011 TED conference. Beiser was the founding cellist of the Bang on a Can All-Stars.
