• Amadeus in London
European Stages https://europeanstages.org Amadeus in London When Rufus Norris replaced the popular Nick Hytner as director of the British National Theatre in 2016, there was a certain amount of apprehension. Although Norris had produced a number of exciting and innovative works, primarily at the Young Vic, in the early years of this century, he had never directed a major house, and there were fears that he was not up to the job. So far his record has been mixed, with a number of not very successful new works and only one unqualified success, a revival of Peter Schaffer’s epic musical psychodrama Amadeus in October of 2016 (the play had premiered at this same theatre in 1979). The event was given increased significance by the death of its noted author in June of that year. Amadeus at the National Theatre. Photo: Marc Brenner. Given that great success, and the rather indifferent reception of other Norris offerings, it is not surprising that the National should revive this production at the beginning of 2017, and I attended the opening production of this much-anticipated revival. I found it well deserving of the praise it has received, and the credit for its success goes not to any single artist but to an unusually effective combination of talents. The play is of course dominated by two monumental figures, the narrator Salieri and the nemesis whom he claims to have destroyed, Mozart. Lucian Msamati is brilliant as the agonized Salieri, hailed as the greatest composer of his time, but inwardly obsessed by the knowledge that the clown/genius Mozart’s work is vastly superior to his own.

Khalsa 1 Akasha Khalsa HON 495X Dr. David Wood Nov. 22 2019 The Power of Modern Othello Through the centuries since it was composed, Shakespeare’s famous, perhaps infamous, play Othello has been making impressions on audiences for its intense plot and gruesome conclusion. As it was performed in 2019 in Canada’s Stratford Festival, Othello differed significantly from the production that was likely envisioned by its author in 1603. Significant changes within this 2019 interpretation of the drama included a modern setting, the fact that Emilia is a soldier along with her husband Iago, and the theatre’s innovative use of interpretive images projected as the background. The staging was not presented in the time period for which it was written. Instead, it was adapted to modernity and set in a time that was perhaps this year— perhaps today.

Stand-Up Comedy and Everyday Life: Post-war British Comedy and the Subversive Strain. Christopher Ritchie. Goldsmiths College, London, Ph. D Drama, 1998. - ME Ia- AM GOLDSMITHS 87 0079879 6 Abstract. This thesis "examinee,,, its to life , . stand-up comedy and relation everyday and presents a model of everyday life in the commodity society. It seeks to define stand up comedy and how it works as a performance mode and will offer a definition of the stand-up comedian. It will examine how jokes reflect opinions and attitudes within everyday life and how they can communicate negative cultural myths, stereotypes and ideologies but also reach beyond the merely absurd and comical to present authentic moments that enable us to locate the truth about ourselves. The thesis seeks to locate a stand-up comedy that enables us to understand ourselves in relation to life in the commodity society. The thesis traces a subversive lineage through post-Second World War comedy from The Goon Show through the satirists of the 1960s and Monty Pylhon's Flying Circus to Alternative Comedy and stand-up comedians in the present day. The 'Alternative Comedy moment' between 1979 and 1981 is central to the thesis as is the relation to American stand-up comedy, Punk and the rise of reactionary humour in Britain. Alternative Comedy is identified and placed in a social, political and counter-cultural context. The achievements and failures of this comedy will be discussed with particular focus on the redefinition of the role of women and sexual politics in stand-up comedy and the creation of a thriving London cabaret and comedy scene.

artistic director leadership programme spring 2017 “why keep going to the theatre if you seldom see yourself reflected there? Lyn Gardner, The Guardian 2014 !1 …gorgeous who we are theatre from a truly diverse company” Lenny Henry OBE tiata fahodzi (tee-ah-ta fa-hoon-zi) – a theatre company for Britain today and the Britain of tomorrow. tiata fahodzi was founded in 1997 by actor and director Femi Elufowoju Jnr. to tell stories about the African diaspora experience and to bring the richness and heritage of African theatre traditions to theatre-making here in the UK. Under his artistic directorship, the company sought to establish itself – project by project – through productions of contemporary texts by African writers, presented in London and sometimes regionally, offering a window into the West African experience – both back home and as immigrants to the UK. In 2010, actor Lucian Msamati became the company’s second Artistic Director. Earlier productions had told stories of emigration and diaspora (tickets and ties), and under Msamati the company’s work began to reflect on the relationship Britain and British Africans have with Africa. In late 2014, director Natalie Ibu took over as Artistic Director, and under her directorship we set ourselves to explore the mixed, multiple, multi- generational experience of what it is to be of African heritage in Britain today. In Natalie’s tenure, we continue to reflect the changing and developing diaspora with a particular interest in the dual and the in-between, in those who straddle worlds, cultures, languages, classes, heritages, races and struggles. It’s in this – the messy, the multiple and the complicated identity politics – that tiata fahodzi sits, acknowledging that our audiences are more complex and contrasting than ever.
