LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC Critical Acclaim “The most successful American orchestra.” - Los Angeles Times “It should be chiseled above the doors of every symphony hall: What an orchestra plays matters as much as how it plays, if not more so. By that measure a strong case can be made that the Los Angeles Philharmonic…is the most important orchestra in the country.” - The New York Times “If ever an orchestra was riding the crest of a wave, it is the Los Angeles Philharmonic.” - The Times (London) “…the most multi-faceted orchestra in the world and certainly the one putting the greatest emphasis on music of our time.” - Los Angeles Times “Under Salonen, the [Los Angeles] Philharmonic became the most interesting orchestra in America; under Dudamel, it shows no signs of relinquishing the title.” - The New Yorker Best Orchestras of 2012 – #1) Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra – “The most talked-about and widely-travelled US orch, carrying Brand Dudamel to all four corners of the earth, split a Mahler cycle between US and Venezuela, advanced tremendous outreach work across its own urban area.” - Norman Lebrecht’s Slipped Disc “The L.A. Phil still boasts the most varied and venturesome offerings of any major orchestra.” - Los Angeles Times “At a time when many orchestras are offering ‘safer,’ crowd-pleasing repertoire picks online, it’s refreshing to see the LA Phil coming out of the gate with programming that speaks to why it is at the forefront of American orchestras today.” - Billboard “‘Blow bright’ is the seventh work commissioned and performed by the L.A.

  • Andrew Norman
THE 2020–2021 RICHARD AND BARBARA DEBS COMPOSER’S CHAIR Andrew Norman Craig T. Mathew T. Craig Andrew Norman has been appointed holder of the Richard and Barbara Debs Composer’s Chair at Carnegie Hall for the 2020–2021 season. One of the most sought-after voices in American classical music and named Musical America’s 2017 Composer of the Year, his music surprises, delights, and thrills with its visceral power and intricate structures. Fascinated by how technology has changed the ways in which we think, feel, act, and perceive, Mr. Norman writes music that is both a reflection of—and refuge from—our fast and fragmented world. Striking colors, driving energy, and underlying lyricism are all present in the work of a composer who defies traditional labels. During his nine-concert residency that kicks off in October, Mr. Norman’s Violin Concerto (co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall) receives its New York premiere with Leila Josefowicz and the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. Mr. Norman’s music will also be performed by the Berliner Philharmoniker led by Kirill Petrenko, the Louisville Orchestra led by Teddy Abrams, pianist Emanuel Ax, Ensemble Connect, yMusic, and the American Composers Orchestra. Committed to the development of new work by emerging composers, Mr. Norman curates a program for the LA Phil New Music Group and participates in the Weill Music Institute’s All Together: A Global Ode to Joy as part of his residency. Andrew Norman’s work draws on an eclectic mix of sounds and performance practices, and is deeply influenced by his training as a pianist and violist, as well as his lifelong love of architecture.

  • Cleveland Orchestra: a Conversation with Violinist Leila Josefowicz by Mike Telin
Cleveland Orchestra: a conversation with violinist Leila Josefowicz by Mike Telin Over the past ten years the adventurous violinist Leila Josefowicz and The Cleveland Orchestra have treated Northeast Ohio audiences to captivating performances of contemporary masterpieces. 2010 saw Thomas Adès’ Violin Concerto, which was followed by John Adams’ Violin Concerto (2011), Thomas Adès’ Concentric Paths (2016), and Adams’ Scheherazade.2 (2018). On Thursday, February 8 at 7:30 pm, Josefowicz will return to Severance Hall to join conductor Susanna Mälkki in paying tribute to their mentor and friend Oliver Knussen with a performance of the late composer/conductor’s Violin Concerto. The concert will also include Sibelius’ En Saga and Symphony No. 1. The program will be repeated on Saturday, February 8 at 8:00 pm. Tickets are available online. During a recent telephone conversation with Leila Josefowicz, I suggested that the combination of soloist, conductor, and orchestra this weekend feels like a dream team. “I agree,” the violinist quickly said. “I wish every date was like this. The Orchestra is unlike any other and Susanna is spectacular. She’s been a dear friend for many years, and our tastes align completely with newer music and what we’re trying to achieve.” When asked why the artistic partnership with Mälkki clicks, the violinist attributed it to a shared work ethic, a devotion to their craft, and above all, a mutual respect for one another. “We just know each other extremely well. The beauty is that when we collaborate, the tiniest little gesture or movement is understood by the other. That’s such a special thing that can never be taken for granted.

Subtle (1991), Chamber Symphony (1992), and the Violin Concerto (1993), each more geometrical details enhance sound amplification by reverberation, ushering chromatic and contrapuntally complex than the last. He began composing vibrations to the feet, legs, arms, and chests of listeners. Architects of such the concerto in 1992, inspired by a rising figure that unfolds in seemingly spaces seek to maximize how surfaces disperse sound waves into and through endless succession. “I had an image of a very regular, slowly repeating wave the body. The idea of shepherding physical energy through sound has long form, a staircase wave that goes up and down,” he said. “There’s a certain attracted John Adams, whose 1993 Violin Concerto confronts the very sonic predictability to it. Over that the solo melodic line floats in a very free, conundrum faced by the concert hall architect: how to make a single violin line rhapsodic way. That largely is the ‘topos,’ not only of the first movement, but resonate above a mass of instruments. Adams’s solution involved the headlong also the entire concerto, with the violin a free spirit that moves above this embrace of the instrument’s visceral intensity.
