General Information
The only fees levied nationally are the original Charter Fee ($25) and the Certificate Fee ($25) for each new initiate. Local chapters may levy additional fees for chapter support.
A copy of the current Delta Phi Alpha Bulletin is provided to each chapter advisor annually, and is available online. Corrections for the online version should be emailed to: [email protected].
Chapter Advisors: Please complete the certificate request form online whenever possible and email it to [email protected]. This will help to prevent errors and will expedite the sending of certificates. If the form does not have an initiation date, the date of processing will appear on the initiation certificate. MESSAGE FROM THE NATIONAL PRESIDENT
Dear Colleagues,
Perhaps you have asked yourself this question recently: What are the actual benefits of a Delta Phi Alpha chapter? Let me summarize them for you:
1) a singular chance to reward students for their performance in German through membership in a prestigious national honor society, 2) the opportunity to bring students together once a year for a special awards ini- tiation, 3) the possibility for Delta Phi Alpha to serve as a quasi German Club on campus with various activities, 4) advocacy for German through raised awareness of German among students and administrators, 5) eligibility for scholarships for outstanding German students to study abroad or to attend graduate study in German in the USA, 6) chapter grants to support cultural activities on campus related to German lan- guage and culture, 7) recognition in your DPA chapter of colleagues from other disciplines who sup- port German study.
Yes, DPA has much to offer and the national officers and I hope you will take advantage of it in 2015 and beyond. We are working to keep the society strong and are happy to hear from you at any time and to meet with you if you so desire at the annual meeting of ACTFL/AATG.

21 Report From the National Secretary Treasurer Delta Phi Alpha Annual Board Meeting: San Antonio, TX: November 22, 2014 4-6pm

Items for Discussion:
Logistics: Going forward the Minutes for the annual meeting will be taken by the secretary / treasurer and will be approved using email. Thereafter they will be published on the web site through the annual bulletin.
New board member inauguration: Since three new board members were present, the President went through the last year and gave an overview of the organization and some of the changes that have occurred.
Amendments to the constitution The board discussed a possible change to our election cycle. The board decided to keep the same two-year election cycle.
The president made suggestions to update the constitution to be more gender inclusive. This also involves the “motto” of the organization. Several suggestions were made for updates and those will be incorporated into a motion to members. The president will investigate the Greek motto with a professor of classics to see how “torchbearers of minds of men” should be updat- ed in English as well as in Greek.
Additional updates were proposed in order to align the election process so that it is clear. Updates were proposed to Article IV section 4 (Sentence deletion), Section IV 3. (Modify date to October 3)
These updates and any others will be reviewed and formally proposed to the chapters for a vote.
Membership report As of November 17, there were 772 inductees. This represents the first year the organization will move exclusively to a calendar year reporting structure. Previously reports were done from November to November. The membership appears to be in line with trends over the past few years.
Financial report The new national secretary-treasurer explained the new accounting structure for the organi- zation. Accounting will occur on a calendar year. The board will receive a full accounting of all expenses and revenue. 22
This year, the organization is running a surplus due to interest income from the invested funds and sales of honor cords. This led to lengthy discussion of how the organization can use this surplus to further its goals of supporting the study of German in the United states.
The following decisions were made.
DPA will now offer two spring / summer scholarships at the same amount of $1250 DPA will offer a pilot program to recognize excellent DPA members seeking teacher certifica- tion in order to be a K-12 German teacher. Eligible students must be seeking certification for K-12 teaching in German. This may include undergraduate or graduate students. Recipients will receive a $500 cash prize and a student membership to AATG. All of the details about the scholarship shall be sorted out by February so that the scholarship may be advertised for the March 15 deadline.
New Chapter Recruitment. The board is looking at German programs (with majors) that do not have Delta Phi Alpha chapters. Board members received a list of institutions with German majors and will contact the heads of the German programs to gauge interest.
Future conferences: The board discussed a possible sponsorship of a panel discussion for 2015. Chapters who have received grants will be invited to talk about advocacy in an open forum sponsored by Delta Phi Alpha at the 2015 ACTFL / AATG conference in San Diego.
Membership in Association of Honorary Societies The Vice President suggested investigating membership in the National Association of College Honor Societies to help us learn about best practices in the field and to gain national accredi- tation as an honor society, and to automatically qualify our students for internships in various federal agencies.

23 Recent Delta Phi Alpha Scholarship Recipients
It is a distinct pleasure to announce the first of our two scholarship recipients, Sophia Croll, a junior at Knox College. Sophia will study next semester at the Universita t Flensburg, in Schleswig-Holstein. A joint History and German major and a member of her college’s Honors Program, Sophia will use the semester to become more proficient in German language and familiar with German culture in prepara- tion for her fascinating research project, “The Memory of Catastrophe: Changing Narratives of Mass Death in German Memorials.” Congratulations Sophia, and best of luck in Flensburg! Equally impressive is our second winner Amber Kline, a junior at Butler University. Majoring in Biolo- gy and German, Amber will put her award money towards her semester at the Universita t Tu bingen. Amber, an excellent student, plans to take classes in German and Biology in Tu bingen. She hopes to use her skills in German language and culture in her future endeavors, and does not rule out the possi- bility of graduate studies in Germany somewhere down the line. This will be her first trip abroad and we wish her the best of luck during her semester in Germany. Congratulations Amber!
Congratulations to Shaydon Bryce Ramey, the 2013 /2014 winner of the Delta Phi Alpha scholarship in the sophomore/junior category. Shaydon is a German major from Wittenberg University, with a Delta Phi Alpha Chapter founded in 1931, representing one of the oldest Universities in the United States with a chapter of the National German Honorary society. With a near-perfect GPA, Shaydon comes highly recommended—one of his references wrote that he is “one of the most enthusiastic and motivated language students” he has known, and that he “always exceeds expectations.” The other noted that Shaydon “is a young man of uncommon academic and linguistic gifts” and speaks of his “uncompromising diligence.” Shaydon will use his prize to defray costs of his semester abroad in Salz- burg, Austria with Bowling Green University’s study abroad program. He plans to study German lan- guage and literature, as well as European history and politics and German and Austrian music. Upon completion of his undergraduate degree, Shaydon plans to study translation at the graduate level with the goal of becoming a professional translator. An immersion experience such as the one he plans for next semester will be an important part of his professional development.
Kerry Gawne, German major and member of the Honors College at the University of Illinois at Chicago, is the 2013/2014 winner of the Delta Phi Alpha senior scholarship. This scholarship is given to the most outstanding graduating senior in German Studies in the United States. She wishes to study multi- culturalism, migration, and intercultural relations as part of the Humboldt University’s Joint Master’s in European History. She is well-prepared for this course of study, having already undertaken three major research projects dealing with far-ranging topics. In addition to a near-perfect overall GPA, Ker- ry has two of the strongest recommendations the committee has ever read. Her recommenders write that she “stands out among her age peers because she seems to think on a macro level about her cur- rent involvements and her professional goals.” Kerry’s goal is to start a non-profit organization dedi- cated to cross-cultural education and understanding. The Joint Master’s in European History at the Humboldt University in Berlin, which includes a semester of study in yet another country—in Kerry’s case Ireland—will certainly help her to solidify her qualifications for this interesting project.
