FY 2010/2011 FLORIDA STATE PARK SYSTEM ECONOMIC IMPACT ASSESSMENT SUMMARY OF DATA Based on Fiscal Year 2010/2011 data, the Florida state park system had an overall direct economic impact of nearly $970 million on local economies throughout the state. Direct economic impact is defined as the amount of new dollars spent in the local economy by non-local park visitors and by park operations. Over $61 million were contributed to general revenues in the form of state sales taxes. In addition, 19,347 jobs were generated as a result of the state parks’ operations. The implication of this data is that for every 1,000 persons attending a state park, the total direct impact on the local community is over $42,000. On average, if a state park was closed for one year, it would mean a loss of over $6 million to the local economy. If the state park system increased its annual attendance by 10 percent during the next fiscal year, it would impact the state’s economy by an additional $90 million. The economic impacts of these parks are due to their location and level of development, leading to high attendance and park expenditure levels. Those parks which are fully developed and can sustain high attendance have the largest direct economic impact on the local economy. DEFINITION OF TERMS 1. Total Direct Economic Impact: The amount of new dollars spent in a local economy by non-local park visitors and park operations. 2. Increased State Sales Tax: The estimated amount of tax dollars the state receives as a result of park visitor expenditures. 3. Total Jobs Generated: This may be any combination of seasonal, temporary, part-time or full-time employment that adds up to 20 full-time jobs per one million dollars in total new expenditures in the local area. Source: Dr. Daniel Stynes, Professor, Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Resources, Michigan State University. 4. Park Annual Attendance: The total attendance which occurred during the twelve-month Fiscal Year 2010/2011. Source: Division of Recreation and Parks. 5. Non-Local Visitor Percentage: The percentage of visitors to a state park unit that are not from the local area. “Impact” is a measure of new dollars introduced to a community. According to the 2006 Florida State Park Visitor Survey, on average, 74% of Florida state park visitors traveled more than 50 miles to reach a state park. 6. Average Per Person Per Day Expenditure: Due to the lack of park specific data, the average per person, per day expenditures made locally by state park visitors is unknown. For the purposes of this assessment, the average per person, per day expenditure is defined as the average amount that a non-resident traveling by automobile in the State of Florida will spend, per person, per day. The expenditure categories used in the average include transportation, food (grocery & restaurant), and other. Source: 2009 Florida Visitor Study, VISIT FLORIDA. 7.
