Prittie family correspondence ............................................................................................... 25 2 Introduction The Prittie family, Lords Dunalley are descended from Col. Henry Prittie who was granted Dunalley Castle and estates in counties Kerry and Tipperary by Charles II in 1678. His descendant Henry Prittie was created 1st Baron Dunalley of Kilboy, county Tipperary in 1800. This small collection consists of family and estate papers of the Prittie, Harrison, Sadleir and Ponsonby families, and was acquired by the National Library in May 1966 from Henry Desmond Graham Prittie, 6th Baron Dunalley. It includes deeds, wills, marriage settlements and related papers, accounts and other financial material, maps, rentals, family and estate correspondence and miscellaneous material. The Dunalley estates amounted to over 21,000 acres in county Tipperary valued at £7,162 in The Great Landowners of Great Britain and Ireland (1883, reprinted 1971). The Harrison, Sadleir and Ponsonby connections arise from marriages between the different families. The Library has received a number of accessions of Dunalley Papers, some of which are listed in Manuscript Sources for the History of Irish Civilisation, vol. 1 ed. Richard J. Hayes (1965), p. 969, Manuscript Sources for the History of Irish Civilisation-First Supplement 1965-1975, vol. 1, ed. Richard J. Hayes (1979), p. 224, and in the card catalogue index in the Manuscripts Reading Room. A part of the collection was listed by T.U. Sadlier, Deputy Ulster King of Arms and published in Analecta Hibernica, vol. XIII, p. 129, although this is not comprehensive. A fuller list was undertaken by Sir John Ainsworth and appears in ‘National Library Reports on Private Collections’ number 472. 3 I.
