Under his leadership, Hultquist morphed the Seminoles into a winning sensation, coaching the team as high as No. 7 in the country in 2008, the highest in program history. Hultquist’s coaching expertise led the men’s ten- nis team to be recognized as a top contender in the conference and across the nation, revamping the perception of the program. As the winningest coach in program history, Hultquist has brought Florida State men’s tennis a sense of confidence and success that had not been seen before. Hultquist and the ‘Noles have played in the NCAA Tournament a school-record 14 consecutive years, including a trip to the quarterfinals in 2005 and two round of 16 appearances in 2008 and 2009. Since 2004, the ‘Noles have made the NCAA Tourna- ment every season and ranked no lower than 47th in the country. In 17 seasons under Benjmain Lock became an All-American in 2016 and was honored as the ITA Most Improved Player in the nation. Hultquist, FSU has had three ACC Player of the Year recipients, six All-American honors, the ITA Most Improved Player and two national ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sports- manship Award winners. Hultquist has won a career-high 21 matches in a season three times, and finished Florida State is known for developing elite talent and its reputation was with a winning record in 14 of his 17 seasons as leader of the ‘Noles. Other notable Seminoles include Ray Bellamy, a team captain in 1960 and 1961 who lost only three times during his time with FSU and later went on to join the Navy as a flight surgeon and win the state’s 35-and-over singles and doubles championship in the 1970s; Marco Abilhoa, a three-time Metro Conference MVP in the early 1980s; Joey Rive, a five-time Metro Conference champion (three singles, two doubles) who was named the 1987 Tennis Magazine Sportsman of the Year and went on to rank as high as No. 57 on the ATP Tour; and Jean-Yves Aubone, the Seminoles first two-time singles All-American and 2009 ACC Player of the Year who ranked as high as No. 8 in the country in 2009, the highest ranking for a Seminole in school history. In 2016, Benjamin Lock also won the ITA Most Improved Player in the nation and ITA Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship and Leadership Award for the Southeast region after rising to No. 9 in the ITA rankings finishing as runner-up for the ACC Player of the Year. Other honors for the Seminoles include the Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award, won by Mirzadeh (2011) and Cloer (2005); the ITA Southeast Region Coach of the Year for Dwayne Hultquist (2013); ITA Regional Assistant Coach of the Year, won in 2003 by Ty Braswell, 2010 by Cloer, and 2006, 2013, and 2015 by Nick Crowell; and ITA Regional Player of the Year, won by Aubone in 2010.
