  • Character Overview Westminster Has 56 Designated Conservation Areas
Westminster’s Conservation Areas - Character Overview Westminster has 56 designated conservation areas which cover over 76% of the City. These cover a diverse range of townscapes from all periods of the City’s development and their distinctive character reflects Westminster’s differing roles at the heart of national life and government, as a business and commercial centre, and as home to diverse residential communities. A significant number are more residential areas often dominated by Georgian and Victorian terraced housing but there are also conservation areas which are focused on enclaves of later housing development, including innovative post-war housing estates. Some of the conservation areas in south Westminster are dominated by government and institutional uses and in mixed central areas such as Soho and Marylebone, it is the historic layout and the dense urban character combined with the mix of uses which creates distinctive local character. Despite its dense urban character, however, more than a third of the City is open space and our Royal Parks are also designated conservation areas. Many of Westminster’s conservation areas have a high proportion of listed buildings and some contain townscape of more than local significance. Below provides a brief summary overview of the character of each of these areas and their designation dates. The conservation area audits and other documentation listed should be referred to for more detail on individual areas. 1. Adelphi The Adelphi takes its name from the 18th Century development of residential terraces by the Adam brothers and is located immediately to the south of the Strand. The southern boundary of the conservation area is the former shoreline of the Thames.

  • Paddington Green Police Station, 2- 4 Harrow Road, London, W2 1Xj – Application for Full Planning Permission
31 March 2021 Delivered by Planning portal (PP-09421899) Nathan Barrett Ref: BERL3011 City of Westminster 64 Victoria Street London SW1E 6QP Dear Nathan, PADDINGTON GREEN POLICE STATION, 2- 4 HARROW ROAD, LONDON, W2 1XJ – APPLICATION FOR FULL PLANNING PERMISSION On behalf of Berkeley Homes (Central London) Ltd, we are pleased to submit a full (EIA) planning application for the redevelopment of Paddington Green Police Station (‘the site’), located at 2-4 Harrow Road W2. The description of development is as follows: “Demolition and redevelopment of the site to provide three buildings, providing private and affordable residential units (Class C3), commercial uses (Class E), flexible community/affordable workspace (Class E/F.1), provision of private and public amenity space, landscaping, tree and other planting, public realm improvements throughout the site including new pedestrian and cycle links, provision of public art and play space, basement level excavation to provide associated plant, servicing and disabled car and cycle parking, connecting through to the basement of the neighbouring West End Gate development.” INTRODUCTION The redevelopment and delivery of the Paddington Green Police Station (PGPS) site represents the completion of Berkeley’s Masterplan for the wider West End Gate site, phase 1 and 2 of which are currently being delivered. The West End Gate Masterplan is Westminster’s single largest housing site, which in total across the three phases will deliver nearly 1,400 new homes to Westminster including 400 affordable homes, alongside a range of complementary employment uses, transformative public realm and place shaping improvements. The delivery of PGPS and the West End Gate Masterplan more generally is also essential to facilitate the delivery of the City Council’s adjacent Church Street Masterplan.
